He clearly has some very good attributes, particularly his close control and vision. Way too early to write him off. It's not at all uncommon for young players to struggle with the physicality of senior football at first.

It must be said though, this loan doesn't seem ideal, what with Sunderland using wing backs.

Alternatively playing centrally will see him learning to use his body better to negate the physicality issues he has currently

He's going to be a slow burner because he's so lightweight. His frame is similar to Salah, who didn't even join Chelsea until he was 22 and even then he was getting pushed off the ball easily.

The qualities are obviously there, they just need fine tuning and making consistent, which will come with gametime and the right coaching.

He’s started to fill out into his frame - look at his arms and shoulders in the final two pics of this tweet:

The Sunderland forum rates him highly and can’t wait for him to start games.

Not sure why but I have always felt positively about the kid. Just seems to have something. Certainly capable of making it here but needs the chips to fall for him at Sunderland.

technically - no issues whatsoever
Decision making - seems his best attribute
Work ethic - does not seem to ever have been flagged as a problem

the problem seems to be his quite casual application - a bit too arrogant for such an early stage in his career. Sort of strolls and dwindles on the ball…lazy passes that he should really be pinging. Makes him seem like a luxury player when he probably isn’t.
A bit more urgency in his play - on and off the ball. I think he will come good.

Its just weird coming from fans of a club that has been renowned for developing youth/academy players -- or maybe they are unaware of that?
Especially when we've got so few wrong and they all tend to have very good careers otherwise.
Ironically the post declaring him a failure talked about it being those giving him a chance doubling down!

He’s looked very talented with obvious physical flaws when he has played but he’s shown wonderful touch and ball playing ability at times, but some have decided he’s awful and a waste of money/time and decided to double down in the bed they’ve made.
It's obvious the Rangers loan wasn't as successful as we'd hoped it would be, but I bet he learnt a hell of a lot, regardless. I have a feeling this loan will be much better for him with game time. Although, I was a bit worried what Mowbray might think of him, but looks as though he will be in his thinking.

He's only 20! I always think we sign players too young - give him a couple of years.

How much time it took Martin Odegaard to become a player worthy of leading a high level club? I know he started too early. But have some patience people

Lots of United fans doubling down on Amad now. They have already made their bed in the 'he's quality' camp.

Honestly never understood the hype. Most of the football he played before joining us was for Atalanta's second team. He hadn't even made 20apps in the first team, had he?

An absolute travesty of a signing. He's not going to make it here.
The irony.

The thing I really like him is how quick his decision making is.
In contrast, I have started to worry about that aspect for Laird after watching several compilations this season.

Little bit Zaha this one. A player like this needs to be the main man to grow. hopefully he has the character that zaha has to demand the ball. zaha never would have developed at united i believe

Odegaard was about 6 months older than Diallo is now when he had the season at Sociedad that confirmed he would be a quality player at the to level. Champo vs La Liga is a massive gulf in quality obviously, but maybe next year Amad can go to La Liga or a Prem team and win a starting spot, and if he can do that I'd say we're in good shape with him.

Not if they cant have an okay game against someone a bit physically stronger than them. Every player from every team will face that a lot, because thats the way weaker teams play against stronger teams
it’s absolutely baffling to me that we’re currently watching City dominate this league with Foden and Silva working their arses off every week and people still say stuff like this. Working hard and running into spaces isn’t an option. There is no level of technical talent Amad can possess where it allows him to play with little physicality. ETH doesn’t favour work rate and physicality over technical ability - he demands both. Just like Pep.
Okay. So, I'm not arguing that Amad Diallo doesn't need to adapt to the physicality of British football. Just that at his size and strength, that's not what his game is going to be based on, and that at the specific stage of development he currently is, he'd be better off somewhere he can develop his technical game to a point where he plays regularly and has an impact, before anyone starts worrying about translating that game to British football and the challenges that brings. It's just about the phasing of development.

Still less have I remotely implied that he doesn't have to worry about "working hard and running into spaces", which is neither about physicality as I understand and employ the term, nor something that is particular to English football. Of course he has. But he doesn't have to the play in the Championship or Scotland to get that.

United is not "too high" a bar at all. Certainly not in the last 10 years. There are several youngsters all over Europe that given enough game time could have easily made it at this club over the dross that has occupied our dressing room in the last 10 years. Its all about having the right people in place to identify the great talents and building a merit-based system that allows youngsters opportunities when the senior players are not good enough (which in our case has been regularly over the last 10 years). Comparing us and City is not a fair comparison at all. The senior players who have played for City in the last 10 years are actually players who are worthy of keeping youngsters out of the team. The evidence is in the 4 premier league titles they have won in the last 5 years. That is not the case for Manchester United.

Take Amad for example, under another manager, Amad could have already made that right wing spot his own, eliminating the need to spend 80 million Pounds on a guy that is only 2/3 years older. Instead our mangers were Ole, past-it Mourinho and past-it Van Gaal.
I believe you are really u estimating the ability a player needs to have to play for us…

Yes we’ve made mistakes but the facts are there are only a select section of players right at the very top capable of playing for the best clubs on the planet.

United are 100% in that conversation even if a lot of our signings have not worked. The players we brought in this summer for example all have exceptional abilities most young players just will never have.

It’s the cream of the crop talent wise it’s just you need to make a cohesive team.

I’ve never seen Amad put in the performances of Anthony at Ajax. Not even close. If you think we can win anything of note throwing teenagers into the starting line up against City and Liverpool you are living in the 90’s.

Football now has gone well beyond that. While some young players might come good. Rashford, Greenwood and McTomminay did. 99.5% of them the bar is just too much at United.

You need to be both technical and bullet proof almost with fitness to succeed in the Premier League. Amad has technical ability for sure but physicality wise he is nowhere near we need him to be.

Anthony looks like a bull physically and has just as much talent so yes we need a more developed footballer to compete for trophies.

Amad still has to work on a lot of things hence why he’s not in the side. Anthony made more impact in 45 mins in a United shirt than Amad has in all his starts.

So you think someone will pay 40+ for Amad (for us to make a profit), for someone not good enough to start for Championship club? Wage on the ceiling side for a Dutch side who may not be good enough to start? If the same scouts that scam us work in these clubs then fine. I recall punts like Powell, Djouf, Djemba, Dong, but they were all on the single category, and at least good enough to share the bench until we ran out of space and patience.
Good thing we didn't buy him for 40m then.

The boy just joined and is consistently getting 20 odd mins, he's playing well, his teammates are looking for him a lot more, and he seems to be gradually winning the Sunderland manager and fans over.

Could someone please tell me what's driving the recent negativity?

What?

didn’t Amad score on his debut too? That’s all Anthony did.

Some have already made up their mind over him and are looking for reasons to shit on him. Some others just like to moan about anything and everything about the club they supposedly support. They are either miserable gits or trolls on a wum. If its the first then i shudder thinking about what their near and dear ones have to put up with daily.

Odegaard had a couple of very good years in the Eredivisie at Heerenveen and Vitesse. I think those were pivotal to his growth. Amad was on a similar trajectory when he was supposedly going to Feyenoord on loan under Arne Slot, until he got injured before the loan materialised. So annoying.

When I see players like maguire, awb and whatnot get unmeritted starts, im increasingly sure he will get his chances by next season. I think by then the boy will be ready. This is what manutd is about.

What impact has antony made at Utd apart from scoring a tap in?

Not the best comparison because Odegaard signed for a huge club when he was young, never really flourished there and has gone on to be a good player at a smaller club. Fairly likely that Amad will go the same way. He's obviously got quality and he is still very young, but at this point in time it's a bit hard to see him becoming a regular United first teamer. Have we ever loaned someone out twice who then ended up being an important first teamer?

Yes, I think patience is the key here, along with good coaching as others have pointed out. He is a very talented player, with a genuine touch of class. I hope and believe he’ll come good.

Yep. That's right. There's only 2 kinds of goals. Tap ins or worldies. Nothing in between.
There are chances which should be converted and ones that are difficult....his goal was the former.

Ødegaard atm is the possibly most important player at the PL league leaders at the age of 23. Not sure how that is not a ‘United level’ trajectory?
