I think, I understand what you mean, but for me, the team form context isn't a factor. I'd agree, that for example Liverpools fullbacks looked great in terms of chance creation over the years mostly, because Klopp used them as the main chance creation tools. So yes, certain team setups help players to shine more in specific aspects but team setup isn't team form. If we consider that, you will never be able to compare players whatsoever. And while admitting that some stats may be more affected by it than others, to make it a general take doesn't seem right to me.
If we look at player A at in form ManCity, a passing heavy team, who is attempting 150 passes and is successful with 140 then why wouldn't that be comparable to a team like us for example with player B who is attempting only 100 and succeds with 75. Or a player who is attempting 10 tackles a game but only wins 2 with a player who attempts only 3 and wins all of them. As I said, team setup will influence stuff like that, but form shouldn't. That being said such player comparisons will always be faulty of course and there is no perfect way to do it.

I will have a look at the videos now.

Oh and yes: I agree with your assessment of him having a good season so far, playing his best football for us since ever and looking promising. Would never have argued with that from the start. I only argue with people picturing him as great or exceptional. Which might be true compared to himself but not compared to rival players.
I think we're mostly on the same page but as you've admitted already, you're just a weary of giving praise or rating a performance, which is fine on its own. However, you are also perhaps underrating what the players have produced on the pitch and I think it's where a few take issue with. You've said Malacia was dire and referred to Dalot as being the McTominay of RBs (!) by basically playing within himself but overall in an almost net negative manner. The truth is that both fullbacks have played big parts in our build up play etc and according to ETH's instructions/tactics. They are not playing at a top tier level but imo definitely above average and hopefully on a clear progression to getting very good. In the context of where Utd is as a team, I can understand why some rate his performances as 'great' from what he's done so far. For me, Malacia/Dalot's roles and performances are more closer to Walker (defensively)/Zinchenko (play making) at City tactically than the other fullbacks mentioned.

Anyways, we're just dissecting fine details atm. It's such a short body of work as I've said before, only 4-5 games so let's see how this goes.

Coaching can do wonders for a player can't it, what a turnaround he's made. Could we still upgrade on him? Probably, but it's no longer a priority and I'm comfortable seeing him the starting line-up now which I never thought would be possible last year.

Not just Ten Hag, I believe he has also benefited from Ronaldo's presence. He has really upped a few levels.

Hope he keeps this up long term. Would love to be proven badly wrong about him.

Yes, it certainly looks like Ten Hag and his coaching team have worked hard with Dalot, as well as McTominay. He has a lot more confidence, both defending, where I felt he was quite weak, and attacking, where he seemed stronger early in his career, but last season he seemed to lose everything.
I'm quite happy at the moment with Dalot, let's see where we are in January when he's had half a season as first choice. Next game v city will be interesting to see how he copes.
Laird seems to be thriving at QPR, so hopefully between them, and possibly Jurado, we could have the RB position settled for many years.

Feel the same, feel confident with him as RB.

Always had the talent. Just needed a coach to trust him. He became a regular only when Ralf came in. That's not even a season. If anything, we are the fans who have been impatient.

I don't get the "turnaround" comments. The potential was always obvious. Last season was his first full EPL season where he wasn't a kid hampered by injuries and half the team had downed tools. He didn't magically "turn it around", the team did.

Well that's a bit silly. Granted there's been lots wrong around him but he's been consistently underwhelming in that time. There have been clear issues in the defensive side of his game. I think it's pretty uncontroversial to talk of a turnaround in his game.

We better sort out his contract.
He’s got the extra year, I think. But still needs doing soon. Real Madrid will be looking to replace Carvajal at some point and Barca are short at RB, too (unless I’m forgetting transfers they’ve made this summer).

Me either. Its thin margins that make a big difference i guess. Everyone else playing much better helps too

He was rated one of the best young FBs in Europe so it is good that he was given the game time at a top level to make the adjustment as he obviously has the tools to succeed.
It does take a strong mentality to play at a big club and it seems that AWB whom showed great defensive abilities at his previous club could not make the transition and has declined in his time at the club instead of thriving and improving his game.
Ethan Laird seems to have all the tools to be a top player so I hope that along with Dalot they will compete for the spot and we don't make that position the next one we are going to splurge a fortune on a player that is no better than what we already have.

Speaking of silly. He was decent all round defensively, except for one-on-one defending, which got exposed horribly on a few occasions (villareal).

I think thats overblown really. Sometimes your full backs are going to get the run around and come off second best. Sometimes they need support from the guys in front of and around them against a good winger (which by most reports Danjuma is). He got the runaround for about half an hour and was mostly fine in the second half was my memory of the game.

If he would have created 10 chances, why doesn't it reflect that neither on fbref nor sofascore? 10 seems way too high to me. I am watching all our games, granted attention is fading in the most boring games, but I can't imagine, I missed 10 chances, he created. Or I just don't know, what some are considering a chance.

Such articles are suspicious sometimes. Same goes for stuff from Statman Dave, who will bend the numbers to generate something that sounds like it is worth tweeting. Fbref and Sofascore show, he hasn't been the best defender, nor fullback this year. Both sources do it so even if we doubt some of the methods, they are consistently applied to other players as well and both sources show it.
Because fbref doesn’t have stats for chances created. Squawka has it and it shows 10. Beside, we need to take into consideration of the fact Reece James and Trent takes set pieces so this actually could boost their xA and chances created. Ironically, Reece James chances created is still below Dalot despite of that.

Dalot has talent in his passing ability and his progressive ball ability. Last season, he was in high rating in making progressive passes and progressive ball. I expected left back to be more priority than right back last summer since I thought ETH would like his progressive ball ability. He’s done as what I initially expected, more consistent performance of what he has shown so far would make him fans favourite.

With Dalot shinning and Laird showcasing his talents in the championship, we might go from desperately needing a right back to being spoilt for choice without spending a dollar.

Yeah his progressive passing has really been a feature. He's a very tidy footballer on the ball. Just his crossing was a bit astray but now he seems to be picking players out in the box

Hands up, I for one never trusted him as a defender. But he’s doing brilliantly under a proper coaching system and doesn’t have to line up alongside Lindelof-Maguire which must have sapped his confidence. Brilliant performance by him yesterday. Long May it continue

That second goal is a a great strike.
It is a good strike because he aimed for that corner. It's not a particularly powerful strike, you can see he saw the opening and went for placement. But the opening was there because of Vaclík's godawful positioning. Any decent keeper should not be making a meal out of this. Central shot, from a mile away... it was humiliating more than anything. The Czech was caught napping at his left post, and then the whole sequence was very Henderson-esque: Running, going down, stretching, but never reaching the ball to get a hand on it. Anyway, i like that he's fancying his chances going forward. It's a sign of a confident player. Long may his good form continue with the red shirt.

many and by many a large majority wanted him sold over the summer and for a while before that. So it is a turnaround because no one is saying that now. Yes obviously the team has done it.. but for me the difference in him has been the biggest out of everyone (mctominay has a case for that too).
