Mahrez first season at City was far better than Grealish's 24 goals&assits vs 10g&a.
Sure, it was better, although g&a is not a good measure between players with different roles and styles. The point is rather that a very good player can struggle for a first season under Pep Guardiola, and it’s nothing new.

Think Diaz settled in fine? Mahrez? Haaland?

Think Cancelo took a while.

Grealish isn’t a bad player and he’s playing in the easiest side to play for (tons of possession) but feels like square peg, round hole.

Surely I didn’t say ‘every’ or even ‘most’ players take time to settle under Guardiola. Neither is it anything completely particular for Guardiola, btw. Diaz was quick, I believe, Rodri and Agüero took a little bit of time. Mahrez too, for my money. Zlatan is known.

You might be right about Grealish, and he might come around. Denying he was very good at Villa is silly though.

You surely didn’t, it’s just a reply :)

Don‘t know who said Grealish wasn’t good at Villa, that would be silly. I watched dozens of his Villa games/plenty live (wife’s a Villa fan) the trouble was (and is), he’s such a diving tw@t, that it can stick in peoples heads when talking about him.

But at Villa, his starting position was different and a lot more of Villas play went through him. Just a weird buy by City, especially for that price (but hey, moneys no object to them?)

Grealish has the world at his feet but he's too busy partying it up and sleeping with random girls. Immature guy in his 20s living it up and is completely unfocused. He is unsuited to the top teams.

Pep was frustrated with Sterling missing glaring chances, he'll certainly get more and more frustrated with Grealish doing nothing every game.

Maybe he'll grow up one day. But this is why you really have to get to know the guy before signing him on a 6 year £93m contract.

No sweat. Somebody i answered did. I’d love nothing more than Pep getting his buys wrong, and everybody does once on a while. Maybe we can buy him on retail and turn him into the new De Jong ;)

He scored and assisted like 1 in 2 that's not struggling. City have a very strong squad but he didn't struggle.
Disregarding stats, I saw a few games he played for City that season, and it was clear to me he struggled with getting involved in the right way, compared to how he played at Leicester, and also at City the next season. Other people seeing other matches echoed this, I remember.

Regarding stats, it’s interesting to note that goal involvements per league game indeed took a dip in 18/19 (18: 22 in 36, 19: 11 in 27, 20: 20 in 33). Thats from almost 2 in 3 to almost 1 in 3 to almost 2 in 3 again.

Even more interesting is looking at how many of the teams goals he was involved in, as Man City obviously creates a lot more goals regardless of who plays than Leicester do, even under Rainieri:

At Leicester, Mahrez was involved in 3 in 7 of Leicesters goals when they won the league. When they and him had a crash landing the following season, he had g/a in about 1 in 5 of their goals. Next season was more than 2 in 5. First season at Man City: about 1 in 9! And then 1 in 5 and 1 in 5/6 the following seasons. So the g/a stats also indicate a pretty marked drop in effectivity his first year at City.

Looking at him play that year still paints the strongest picture to me. He didn’t look comfortable, he cut a frustrated figure
More often. Which would makes sense - going from being a lynchpin with enormous freedom, to a part player with very strict tasks would take some getting uaed to for many. I call that a struggle, maybe you want to use another word for it, I don’t mind.

Does he get to play in David Silva’s position?

He was never an out and out LW.

Best player on the pitch in the first half, as mentioned before all the signs are there for a very good season from him

Why we tried to hack him down but let Foden shoot though I'll never know. Grealish is a far better all round footballer than Foden but his finishing is poor whereas Foden is pinpoint.

Was given the freedom of the park in the first half, but didn't really look that dangerous,

Couple of good moments but bit enough to state he was the best player on the pitch!

0 g/a but best player? Silent domination.
Put it like this, if any of your front players had the ability to hold on to the ball under pressure and then threaten with the ball consistently for 45 minutes you might have come away with something.

Nah, nothing special.
He was arguably better than two players that netted hattricks, so not sure about "nothing special"

Thank god a lot of great players played way before the g/a-nerd timeline, loads of them would miss out on the credit they were due. Some people are even trying to downplay Zidane's career in retrospect.

Didn't compare him with Zidane, just tried to make a mockery of the whole g/a thing.

Grealish was great today, that is beyond debate if people watched the game. He has mostly had decent to good games for us, but every once in a while he gets immense criticism from people not watching because he regularily fails to get on the scoresheet. Highlighting how good he is while still not directly getting g/a is just a bit of wealthy balance

Grealish loves the ground, he's a 100 million foul generator

Best player in the first half was Haaland, then KDB, Foden, Bernarndo etc.

Not that they needed it but he gave them even more confidence in the early parts of the game.

He definitely looked up to it from the beginning and had a great 1st half.

He wasn’t great, it was no more than you’d expect from a decent winger up against Dalot on a yellow playing for Man City. You are just trying to justify why you have a £100m fraud on your hands, DeBruyne again was your best player without even doing very much except DeBruyne stuff…

Agreed. He does some clever things and goes past players, but then he goes and does it again and ultimately loses the ball. He tries to do too much on his own. He also takes too many touches, which stops the flow of City’s attacks.

Him creating mulitiple chances mean jack all when hardly any of then turn into anything.

£30m more than Casemiro if that’s who you mean?

As I say you’re here to troll. It’s a bit sad.
No, I'm just arguing that he usually plays very well for us which is something I have said multiple times in this thread earlier in his City career. It's just a shame that he will always get judged on goals when, like many other good players before him, it is just simply not his game. De Bruyne, Bernardo, Gundogan and Foden were all good but in my opinion Grealish dribbling were the main reason we got your defence out of shape so often in the first half.

Can't comment on Dalot's usual level, but worth mentioning that the reason he was on a yellow was a smart touch from Grealish

Grealish was excellent today- as were Citeh generally. He seems to be settling in but I still think he would have been a better fit here or at Chelsea than being somewhat stifled in a Guardiola system.

Love how you just made it sound like Grealish had nothing to do with Dalot being on a yellow from the get go.
