Absolutely no club in this universe is paying a fee to sign De Gea for the same reason nobody wanted Ronaldo too old to justify his ridiculous wages for short term
He'll have to either accept a massive wage cut to the £100-150k(absolute MAX) a week ballpark or let him go on a free because it would be super expensive to keep him for a year still on £375k a week
But its an issue of priorities. We need to get a top striker first. A RB and a backup to Varane next IMO.

That will eat into any top goalie budget (£40million at least) next summer. So we cant then let him go for free next summer.

Some decisions have to be made.

Yes, we do. He’s been here for over a decade so we should work to benefit all parties.

By letting him go and buying somebody better, we both improve our team , reduce our wage bill and hopefully manage his transition with a bit of dignity so that he gets a move that’s right for him at this stage in his career.
His wage is relatively cheap than spending £40-50m outlay (if not more) for a ETH type goalie

There's no way DDG would accept what he is truly worth. Anything over 100k a week for him is too much. Can't see any top club offer him anything near it either.
If he signed a new contract it would be because the new managers wants him as his #1. At which point he certainly deserves to be paid more than 100k. Because (depending on the sources you believe) 100k would see him getting paid less than players like Martial, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw, Fred, VDB, etc.

Of course I don't think he should be our #1, so I wouldn't give him that new contract. But if we do then the paycut he's expected to take won't be so obviously beneath his status within the squad.

Then do we get a striker or a goalie next summer? Not sure we can afford both in the same window after this summer's spending.

That's also true.

If we can renogotiate with DDG down to say 250k a week, it will be a lot cheaper.

What we have to weight up is whether DDG will keep at the top level for long enough, and do we risk missing out on a young top talent.

Sometimes you have to be cut throat and swap players out before they become below the level required. That's the risk of management.

We will certainly spend less than we did last summer but we're still a very rich football club who in this scenario would have freed a lot in wages with the departure of our two highest paid players, even before any additional player sales. We would still have scope to strengthen multiple positions.

Henderson and the wages saved from not extending DDG's contract should cover the new keeper.

It’s not often a keeper with the right credentials comes along so if we think this guy is the real deal we should move for him in the summer and move De Gea on in my opinion.

A bit of perspective -- Van der Sar joined United at 35y.o.

So letting go/giving away DDG for free isn't a decision that should be taken lightly.
Very different types of goalkeepers, almost to the point of not being remotely comparable.

There is no issue with letting De Gea go on a free as he isn't a player we would get a fee for and he's not a player any of our rivals would sign. There is no positive to giving him a new contract, even this supposedly new improved De Gea of the past few weeks is still miles off the top goalkeepers in all of the relevant metrics and EtH will know that.

Sure. But if we only have say £120million (if lucky) to spend next summer, would you then spend £40-50million of that just on a goalie? Then get a sub-optimal striker? Or instead, keep DDG until our higher priorities are met?

Is this guy actually a good goalie or are we all just seeing that he made an assist and saved a few penalties recently?

Is he actually a good keeper who can command his box, play from the back and also stop goals going in?

Personally, yes I would, the right goalkeeper transforms the team. But it depends on the market, it terms of the availability of other players and also in fairness it doesn't have to be £40-50m spent. £40-50m gets you the ideal goalkeeper granted, but maybe you don't need the ideal goalkeeper straight away. Maybe you look at Raya with a year left on his deal, maybe you look at Sommer available on a free, obviously there are morre but those are two off the top of my head. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a goalkeeper that is a better fit for this team than De Gea is.

I need to see more of him as I never like to properly judge a player I haven't seen in the flesh, but statistically he's got everything in fairness. Plays high up, deals with balls outside the area, deals with a high percentage of crosses, positive PSxG stats, good passing stats. You can see why we've earmarked him to look at based on the stats alone and obviously his performances on screen have looked very impressive which back them up.

I expect Maguire and AWB to fetch 20m each too and save on wages. Hell they should fetch that because they are more than good enough for mid-table PL teams. They'd likely be their best defenders. I actually expect DDG to fetch that too because he would be an improvement for most teams, even Chelsea should want him for a couple of years. We underrate our players too much.

Get him next summer
Love De Gea but it just feels like the right time to make a change in the goalie department

He hasn’t been at the top level for years, and his all round game isn’t up to scratch. He’s having something of an error-free spell at the moment but he’ll cost us again in the near future and he still remains a liability as soon as the ball gets pumped into box. This is without entering the territory of his distribution.

I don't see why we shouldn't be able to upgrade on the current keeper even with limited funds. Henderson should fetch about £20m and if we allow DdG to leave then that's another £19m or so saved on wages. And that should be more than enough for a new keeper who fits the profile of what ten Hag requires in the build up phase, and who is also proactive in nature to command and control his area on crosses and contain opposition counters by sweeping up.

And it's not just what ten Hag requires but literally it's a requirement for all the clubs who have aspirations of playing a proactive brand of football. You can't have a keeper in the game today who is far below his peers when it comes to distribution and command of his area. Man City in their last league game against Brighton faced a team who set out to press them man to man, rather than the orthodox ball orientated pressing we're accustomed to seeing. So as City faced a team who set out to press them in a man orientated strategy, City looked to their free man to break the shackles and their keeper Ederson was that free man and his ability on the ball broke the dead-lock. We seem to have handicapped ourselves in that regard, which is extremely disappointing and I'm amazed to see the number of people who don't see the current keeper as a big issue.

We won’t get a good fee for De Gea no matter how many years sit on his contract. He’s probably the highest paid goalkeeper in world football. The club isn’t going to keep him around when they can bring in a better alternative who will improve the team.
If any clubs understands this you'd think it would be United with what we've done with Jones, Long are, Baily etc.

Pep went from Hart to Bravo before going to Ederson. That's a very feasible short term approach with spending bulk of budget on striker.

You are missing the point.
No, you are. You appear to be intimating that improving upon a position that is in clear need of reinforcement should not take place because you’re worried about the fee we get for De Gea. That’s barmy.

Goalie will be paid for by the goalie department. Henderson will command a good fee and then De Gea will result in good savings.

Chelsea under Potter aren't going to be interested in De Gea, for much the same reason that ETH may look to upgrade him. Kepa's ability on the ball is one of the reasons he's currently starting ahead of Mendy as is.

Think its worth giving DDG severely reduced wages and then signing Costa 100%.

Or show DDG the door and get a decent back up, I think Costa is head and shoulders above.

Remember we signed DDG to replace VDS and that was over a decade ago now, football has changed. DDG hasn't.

A top modern keeper will improve the entire side, it's a no brainer for me.

DDG is by far the highest paid goalkeeper in the world, despite being in the bottom half of PL goalkeepers over the last four and a half seasons. No club is going to be giving us a transfer fee for him.

ST is the only position that takes up most of the budget alongside CM and even then Ronaldo leaving for free opens up a lot of wages plus selling both Fred/VDB gives us some funds for a CM and wages off the books
Selling Henderson for about £20m with £100k a week off the books and either letting De Gea leave for free or give him a gigantic wage cut by around half his wages gives us more than enough funds for a GK
Bailly's loan deal hopefully becoming permanent with both Jones/Axel leaving for free and selling one of Maguire/Lindelof pays for a new CB
Selling Telles, AWB, Laird and Williams pays for a new RB
Granted that's a lot of departures but many of the deadwood I've mentioned are either leaving for free or have a year left on their contracts so will be available for cut price fees. If we get sales right we can afford a GK, CB, RB, CM and ST for a net spend of around £100m

That’s all well and good, apart from Laird. He has no business on your list of deadwood and should be given a fair chance to develop under ETH. He’s impressed in all age groups and in all his loans so far, and has a real chance at making it at United.

I like these sustained links from credible sources :D

I can’t see DDG taking a paycut so I think he’ll just leave, and maybe it’ll be this guy and Dubravka as our respective No.1 and No.2 next season, if we pay Newcastle the fee on the full transfer?

How reliable is this?

One thing's for sure, if we're to offer De Gea a new deal it should be with no more than 150K per week. I would rather get a progressive keeper such as Costa though.

I don't think De Gea Will find anyone stupid enough to pay even close to what were paying him. He's not even a top 5 keeper, yet he's the best paid one.

This. He'll re-sign with us on much more reasonable terms because nobody wants him. Saying he's not a top 5 keeper is being generous. Judging from his country's selection for the pre WC squad, he's not even a top 5 keeper from his own nation.
