Iam not sure you were trying to reply to me, but I was thinking of a time frame between 98-2010 hence only 2 seminifinal defeats in euro championship tournaments. The roster was quite different in 1992 to those during the years 1998 - 2010

Feck, Dumfries picked up an injury today. Hope it's not too serious.

I was thinking that Pasveer has had quite the journey the last few years. When he joined Ajax from Vitesse aged 37, I figured he did it as a kind of early retirement: get a good salary to be second keeper and occasionally play, while being part of something bigger and probably winning some more prizes (he did previously as backup at PSV). Then Onana got suspended, Stekelenburg got injured - and Pasveer took his chance and now he's going to a WC.

I don't think he would have quite believed you if you had told him this when he moved it Ajax!

It's mad that Pasveer is going over Flekken (and even Cillessen, though feck him). He did okay for a few months, but has long since returned tl his regular average level. I just hope Vangle isnt insane enough to start him. Though I doubt that.

Somewhat similar to Hans-Jörg Butt, who stumbled into being Bayern's first choice, embraced the challenge and eventually made the Germany squad. Though he was a respected keeper beforehand.

Ironically also van Gaal's doing.

Do you have an opinion on Mark Flekken? He's a bit of an unknown here, but his stats seem brilliant and his team seem to be doing very well so no one here understands why he didnt make the final squad. Is he any good?

I think public opinion considers him 'good', but I haven't watched him closely enough to pass judgement myself, other than remembering a pretty huge blunder against Dortmund. One thing to note is that Freiburg are usually a very solid team that helps its defensive players out a lot, so good stats aren't necessarily everything.

I guess it really was between Pasveer and Flekken. Bijlow is supposed to be the prodige (if only he could stay injury-free), and apparently Noppert is in really good form (although I know nothing about him), and there's a serious personality issues for Van Gaal with Cillessen. And I guess Pasveer and Flekken have both had issues lately. So maybe Pasveer then better fits the squad since he's been playing with a fair few of the players already.

Thing is, I'm quite sure Flekken has been doing very well lately, seeing as Freiburg are 2nd in the league. The added caveat is that Flekken was sort of "discovered" by Van Gaal. He was the one to first call him up and repeatedly said Flekken is a real "Van Gaal keeper". Pasveer has been in abysmal form lately (actually he just went back to his regular midtable Eredivisie level), but I suppose he will be less anoying whilst sat on the bench as opposed to Cillessen who comes across as a massive tit.

In the end though, it's just keepers and as Johan Cruijff said, if you have the ball, you don't need a goalkeeper. Or something.

Yeah, I would also have expected Flekken to be there in place of one of the three others. Guess Pasveer got the Ajax bonus here.

I looked, and can't actually find a Cruijff quote on goalkeepers! So I'll go with the next best thing: "If I had wanted you to get it, I'd have explained it better." ("Als ik zou willen *** je het begreep, zou ik het beter hebben uitgelegd.")

I think there's no exact quote, but he used it to defend the fact that he didn't replace Sergio Busquets' dad who was a shite goalkeeper as he reasoned that you don't really need a keeper if your opponent never shoots.

I am of the insanely unpopular opinion that we give Johan Cruijff a bit more credit than he deserves. But don't tell the huge influx of new Ajaxfans we have here.

Probably, yes - given the insane height he sits at. (No, not talking paradise/heaven here. :D ) But then he's an awesome cult figure. So much more fun than other countries' greatest players.

I'm from Freiburg. Very surprised he isn't even in the squad. Without following the Dutch national team I would have assumed he would be in contention to start at the World Cup tbh.

Seeing LvG at the sidelines is actually my main reason for watching this tournament. I know I shouldn't, but I just love that crazy bastard.
Same here, the only two teams I will watch on the tournament are Portugal for obvious reason and Netherlands . Go Oranjes !

@KirkDuyt any idea? Need to know whether it's wortwhile putting him into my Sporza WK manager squad
I'm not sure actually. Van Gaal said he sees him as a midfielder and as such I think Steven Berghuis will get the nod at number 10. He will definitely by a 12th or 13th man if he doesn't start though, since he can play on the wings as a striker and as a 10.

I think Gakpo is an option on 10 with Berghuis at 8 next to Frenkie against smaller teams... against the bigger teams Berghuis and Frenkie will surely be completed by someone with more defensive awareness such as Klaassen, de Roon, Koopmeiners..

Will be interesting as we are only facing smaller teams (on paper) in the group stages..

Netherlands were great on 2014 World Cup and it made us believe we were in for something special with van Gaal. Would be nice if they can go far again.

The only remaining question is who will be the 3rd midfielder next to Berghuis and Frenkie..

----------------Bijlow----------------
------Timber-VVD-Ake---------
Dumfries-------------------Blind
-----?1/Berghuis--Frenkie----
---------------?2/Berghuis--------
--------Bergwijn--Depay--------

?1 could be Koopmeiners, De Roon (or less likely Taylor).
?2 could be Klaassen of Gakpo (or less likely Lang or Simons).

The rest is fixed, at least going into the tournament. Noting that for the 1st game Depay probably isnt fit yet so Vincent Janssen will start.

I'm not that sure of Bijlow? Sure, Vangle claims the shirt numbers don't mean who's starting, but I can see the crazy git start Pasveer. Not that's I'm particularly bothered about that, Pasveer seems like a nice dude.

The fact we now have to start Janssen instead of Depay really hammers home the weirdness of not selecting Danjuma though. He's the perfect Depay stand in as they're quite similar. Especially since we now have 3 tall and "clumsy" guys with Luuk de Jong, Weghorst and Janssen. Danjuma instead of Weghorst or Janssen would have made so much more sense,

no more heart breaks or continue with tag of "world greatest loser" ?
Them's fightin' words!!!

Timber a sure thing over De Vrij and De Ligt at the back?

Fullly agree with your take on Danjuma in stead of one of Janssen, Weghorst, de Jong.

Bijlow has been in much better form than Pasveer, though Pasveer did really well for NL the last to national games..

Yeah..

Ake is de leftie
Van Dijk the central leader
Timber the on who is supposed to build up and get into the midfield (also with dribbles on the ball)..

So Timber is a very different profile than De Vrij or De Ligt which makes him complement Van Dijk and Ake more than the other two..

Van Gaal has been quite clear on this.

Im looking forward to watching holland play more than england. Mainly because we've been linked to de jong, dumfries, cody etc. Get to do my own scouting of them.

As an SC Freiburg supporter it's nothing short of a classic Van Gaal move to exclude Flekken. Clearly the best Dutch keeper by some distance. Very good keeper, apart the blunder v BVB he has been rock solid. Van Gaal will Van Gaal that's the only thing I can say.
