Doesn't stop him posting with a gust of condescension and moral superiority.
You're surprised that people who think there is a big, paternal sky being who loves them, solely because they happened to be born in that country, and believe the things in an old book, solely so they can be rewarded in an afterlife, seem morally superior?

It also feels pretty alarming to me that a governing body or a host, rather than a match official, can threaten a booking for this.

Is there anything in football's rules that actually allows for a booking in this case?
Yeah, they'll just say it's showing a political slogan which is a yellow.

I wonder is there any other way of getting the point accross. Something similar to taking the knee and all players do it. It would actaully be a bigger show of support and protest than an armband

I would imagine the players are going to be asked about it constantly so they can put their stance across after every single game. Leave everybody in no doubt that FIFA are corrupt, racist, homophobic morons.

They shouldn't have been put in this position. They should have just let them wear the armbands. Now will they wear the ones FIFA have chosen.
So FIFA also have a LGBT armband? This makes no sense for both parties really, your both pro something so just wear what ever the feck you want.

Being banned from your job for a third of the time is hardly the smallest of obstructions.
Maybe there are things more important than being 'banned from your job'?

They are taking thr knee from the reports I've seen, unless there has been a change in that too.

It just goes to show they didn’t really give a shit about highlighting any issues when they back out at the threat of receiving a poxy yellow card. Pathetic.
Exactly this, laughable.

I've several times more respect for some of the plebs on here and elsewhere who are actually actively boycotting watching matches/not traveling etc.

I just don't get what the issue was wearing them. Maybe Infantino is sat at his plush home knocking out these armbands as we speak.

Did the Qatar captain wear the Palestine armband yesterday? Im sure I read that somewhere.

Also are Poland due to wear a Ukrainian one

If thats the case surely the One Love armband should also be accepted
No, of course he didn't. Caring about Palestine kids is a much stronger NO for FIFA and its sponsors. The One Love armband is limited to events in some countries, specially given that UEFA allowed it (Neuer) in last year's Euros.

I think supporting Ukraine at this point has a large enough consensus for FIFA to authorize it risk-free.

It's not about the issues themselves. It's about how FIFA/UEFA think it would affect their business.

Backing down and being backed down says a lot more about this than FIFA will ever admit.
Perfect symbolism

Certainly.

I just don't like this notion that a yellow card in a world cup is a nothing matter. It's the hardest punishment FIFA can introduce that isn't a red/ direct ban itself.

There's 2 sides to this world cup, the sporting side, and the propaganda side. And the players will still want to win the sporting side of things.

“We were prepared to pay fines … however we cannot put out players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play.”

They were prepared to hand over some money, of which they have lots, but the risk of a player getting a little yellow card waved at them is too traumatising to consider. It’s better to just forget about humans rights as the damage caused to millions in the future by ignoring injustice today is nothing compared to the horrible futures that await the England and Wales captains if he had to leave the pitch in a competition that neither of them are going to fecking win in the first place.

Seriously, if it was me I’d wear the armband before the start of the match. When they made me take it off I’d put it back on in the 89th minute. When they sent me off I’d take my kit off to reveal a OneLove shirt. When I was told to remove that, OneLove tank top. Under that? One those weird bra things. Kane and Bale should be like that meme of Barney Gumble being thrown out of Moe’s Tavern.

Players are there to play the tournament of their career, it is unfair to put distractions on them imho?

That's what was gonna make this, originally token, gesture actually worthwhile. The idea of being shown a yellow card for supporting equal rights. And then if they went and wore the armbands again, and got booked again - even better.

Now they're just making it clear that they support the cause, up until the point where they may actually come up against some sort of pressure.

Went from "Be Respectful" to "We Denounce Your Existence" real fast. Predictable, really.

The only way everyone's idea of them getting booked would work would be if the majority of the nations did it. Enough to soil this World Cup. But likely, we can already see that it won't happen.

feck human rights if it risks us winning football matches. What a brave stance.

As in different in the Qur'an and Islam.

Believe it or not it was way ahead of its time
Indeed it was initially, but it has since like many things stopped evolving for more conservative believers like yourself. For progressive Muslims striving for equality and a pluralistic and just society through a critical engagement with Islam is hasn't stopped.

If they back down now, it will be a complete embarrassment. If you are not willing to take the card, it portrays your conviction as specific and limited to when it's convenient.

That's not principles, that's rank hypocrisy.

Then don't give it the big talk leading up to the tournament about how you plan to show support and solidarity.

As strongly as I feel about this I can't blame him or the other players. It effectively would mean sitting out the 3rd group stage game.

Taking part in world cups is what we all dream of playing as kids, and given they never had that dream buried like the rest of us they probably still do.
It's of coure up to everyone personally how much they want to invest into a cause, but maybe they shouldn't have played themselves up as curageous defenders of human rights and equality if they end up backing down at the first hurdle.. Some of these players getting sent-off or missing games, largely meaningless groupstage games at that, would have sent a message louder than any other they could come up with and etched the farcical status of this WC into eternity, as "that one time backwards laws impacted the integrity of the competition".

I tend to agree. The point has been made. Qatar knows what people think of them and the human rights abuses have been highlighted.

Let's get on with the football.

I also agree that you shouldn't give the big talk if you eventually back down anyway.

Honestly, like many of your posts on these topics it comes across as deliberately vague and disingenuous. You haven’t directly answered the question, which should be quite simple.

I’ll rephrase it - in a hypothetical ideal Islamic state with “100% Islam” as you put it, according to you is consensual sex between two adults of the same gender legal or illegal? And if illegal, what if anything is the appropriate punishment?
I'm not trying to be vague or disingenuous. The questions you pose are not yes and no questions.

But here you go

Sodomy is a sin/illegal. Same sex is a sin/illegal.

There is no punishment, by the people/ruler etc if it's not open and public. This is the same for all sex and genders.

If there is to be a punishment then this can vary too. See hadud laws.

That's not me being evasive. Conditions have to be met for certain punishments. However the ultimate penalty would be death
