Always thought offside is given to a player receiving the ball at the time when the ball was kicked. Learned something new today about player was onside when the ball was kicked but then passed it to another onside player from an "offside" position! So fecking confusing. Learn something new everyday.

So basically if you are one on one against GK, you cannot pass to your teammate who can be far behind onside position??

You can as long as your teammate is farther away from the goal than the ball.

If your teammate is behind the ball then they can't be offside.
Correct right? So offside is always from the perspective of receiving player, or at least that's what I assumed until yesterday.

Far far away...

A player is off side if he is in front of the ball and has less than two opposition players between himself and the by-line.

When? At the time when the ball was released by the previous passer? Or at the time of receiving the ball? Or anytime during the play?

At the time the ball is played, that's when the "offence" occurs.

That's correct. The Ecuadorian player was offside because his team mate who challenged the keeper for the ball got a touch. At the time that happened he was marginally offside and he then headed it back to his team mate who attempted the volley.

Precedent now set that you can wrestle playing down in the area

That was everyone’s issue with the McTominay pen against Chelsea. We all know that penalty never gets given.

Correct decision IMO. Grabbing shirts in the box is one of my pet peeves. Such an easy thing to avoid and always risks conceding a penalty.
Can't set the precedent early on with the Maguire challenge and then not allow something much softer.

It's the ridiculous inconsistency that is the biggest problem. A complete lottery when it has no need to be.

Grabbing shirts is stupid. It's given as a foul way more often than any kind of wrestling or man-handling.

More consistency is obviously needed but one bad decision doesn't invalidate a later good decision and finally it's 6 feckin 2, give over.

Both given or both not given. Inconsistency within the league, or tournaments is bad enough - for it to happen within the same game is shocking. The score, or what minute it is should never come into the refs mind. The people behind VAR have had a shocker

Maquire was wrestled to the ground in the Iranian box in the 2nd or 3rd minute.
Maguire was wrestled to the ground (I’m not English). Was a pen.
As @Withnail said, a ref can let a bit of wrestling go (on the basis that both players are man-handling each other) but when one player has a fistful of another player’s shirt in his hand then he’s no choice but to penalise him.

What was up with the 10 minutes of additional time?

I guess it make sense if you're adding the actual amount of wasted time but is this going to be applied to every game now?

The one on Maguire was like the pen McTominay gave away Vs Chelsea

It was a full on rugby tackle on Maguire though, was much more than just a bit of wrestling.

Not only was the Maguire one a blatant penalty but Stones is also getting his shirt pulled by an Iran defender at the same time.

To not give a pen for that but to give one later is mental

He was wrestled to the ground, you wont see a clearer penalty. It doesn't really matter because it was 6-2, but in a close knockout game it's unacceptable, var is a lottery and decides the fate of a game it shouldn't be like that.

Oh I was supposed to also say I didn't see the initial incident either sorry to imply anything about the severity of it.

Both were pens, but the issues is that one was given and one wasn't. It felt like it was given because it was 6-1 whereas the Maguire decision was at 0-0.
