Is Cristiano Ronaldo a United Legend?

Possibly the greatest player I've seen for us, but at the same time, arguably the biggest twat to ever pull on the shirt. From the wantaway antics of his first stint to the non-stop petulance of his return, he's a hard player to have any affection for. Underpinning it all is absolutely zero personality. I can't think of Ronaldo doing or saying anything that would lead you to think he had any other character than pure, unfiltered narcissism.

How is he a legend though? A handful of great seasons for United? He’s a madrid legend not a United one
He is six goals short of breaking van Nistelrooy's record. He is only 20 appearances short of Ole's total. I could see him breaking those numbers if things didn't go south like we saw this season. And he did it in less time than Rvn and Ole.
He was our league's top scorer for 4 seasons, more than Rooney.
He also won his first Ballon d'Or in United shirt.
If Cristiano is not a United legend, then neither Andy Cole nor RvN. Or even Ole if you discount his goal in the Champions League final.

Fans are currently pissed off and rightly so. Give it a few years though and all will be forgotten..
Unless he joins Man City/Liverpool or does something terrible he will always be considered a legend no question.
A lot of fans will remember the good times and there were many.

We are pissed off right now but he has scored 145 goals and won 3 PL and CL with us. That cant be ignored. Maybe we should revisit this after few years

The only part that shouldn't be ignored is that he through tantrums in order to leave the club twice and spent his prime somewhere else.

He's the best player I've personally seen play for the club so id say its an obvious yes. A legend for me is players who'll be spoken about to younger generations.

People seem to be arguing it as a respected club figure. On that basis sure the answer might be no but I see little sense with that definition.

He was a very very talented player who in his 1st spell was great. In my mind to be a legend, in addition to being a great player, you have to be welcomed back warmly by everyone associated to our club (e.g. Cantona, Robson, Charlton).
So in that case he does not meet criteria for me.

In fairness I wouldn’t have those as a legend either, just short of it. But that’s just my personal opinion

Didn't consider him a Utd legend after his first stint with us, not sure a few years after his latest stint epuld change that.

The best player or the most efficient? I could think of several players that I would see as better footballers, example Paul Scholes

His minutes-per-goal ratio is actually worse than both Ole and RVN, so he didn't do it in less time than either of them.

Also, I'm pretty sure no one in a United shirt got to 150 goals quicker than RVN.

A key difference is that Cole, Van Nistelrooy, and Solskjær all gave their best years to the club, then moved on when they had past their best. As soon as Ronaldo had one outstanding season he was agitating for a move to Madrid. Ronaldo came back when he was clearly past his best, undermined three managers with his childish behaviour and was forced out of the club because he was so toxic.

Definitely not a United Legend under any circumstances.

No. From the slave comments to this whole embarrassing episode he should never be considered a club legend. Most people don't even relate Ronaldo to United like they do to Madrid, they can keep him.

I'm intrigued by your list as that's just crazy to me. He was supreme in the seasons before he left, Scholes never hit those heights nor Keane.

Schmeichel and Cantona would be the closest in terms of impact or at least as far as I recall in distant hindsight.

He probably is in most people's eyes, this latest episode from him imo he's not totally at fault, he's been taken for a ride and he will realise it in the future. He's the best I've seen at OT live along with the Brazilian Ronaldo. I'm glad for Utd and for him he's gone. Sadly this time round he won't be missed, not that we missed him much after he went the first time. He did more for Real Madrid and they don't hold a fecking candle towards him at all, it's just a UTD thing.

He will never be a Robson .

Not a fvcking chance and I’m amazed the question even needs to be asked, twat of the highest order who has never cared one iota about the club or fans despite his pathetic attempts to as it’s always been about him and him only, cvnt ? Yes, legend ? Don’t make me laugh.

Fair enough...I think a lot of fans do consider Cristiano a legend especially after his first spell. 2006-2009 in my eyes and a lot others we had the best player in the world.

Our only Ballon d'Or winner post Best, Law, Charlton era.

As someone pointed out already if Ruud Van Nistelrooy (who also had a acrimonious exit and behaved appallingly) is considered a legend, Cristiano a better player has to be too.

If you look simply at a footballing perspective then yes as he is one of only four players to have ever won Balon D’Or/World Player Of The Year playing for us and one of only five players to ever do it playing in England.

Trophy wise Ronaldo won a Champions League, three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups and a World Club Cup during his first stint with us and was the star player in what is most likely our greatest ever team/squad in the 2006-2009 team/squad.

Personally I think Ronaldo is the most toxic, self obsessed, self serving, spoilt brat cnut to ever play for us and I’m ecstatic he’s gone as his attitude would have had a horrible affect on the squad BUT that doesn’t change his first stint at the club.

I think he’s a bigger legend for Real and Portugal than he is for us and his disgusting behaviour makes his extremely hard to see in a positive light like the likes of Best, Charlton, Law, Robson and Cantona all are but achievements wise unfortunately Ronaldo is a United legend as well as the biggest cnut to ever play for us.

Real Madrid legend. He was successful with us but we were always just a stepping stone for him. He was a great player and I have no real axe to grind but talent alone does not make a legend in my estimation. Honestly, Gary Neville is more of a United legend than Cristiano.

Who changed the title? I preferred it in its original, broken English form

I was going to mention Cantona

re scholes, from Manchester, 1 club man, over 700 appearances, over 150 goals, god knows how many assists over what, 20 years or so?

from wiki:

Over his career Scholes has received praise from various managers and players, including Xavi, who said in 2014 that Scholes was "the best central midfielder" he had seen in the previous 15 to 20 years, describing him as "a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn't give possession away."[12] Pelé said, "If he was playing with me, I would have scored so many more."[13] Thierry Henry cited Scholes as the greatest player in Premier League history.[5]Scholes was named in the Premier League 10 Seasons Awards (1992–93 to 2001–02) Domestic & Overall Team of the Decade. In 2008, he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.[14]

How can he NOT be a Manchester United legend? Underrated by our own fans

I wouldn’t consider Cole, RVN or Ole as legends either. Legends are the likes of Charlton, Busby, Fergie and a couple more. The legends list should be short, not just every player who had a good stint

If being amazing for your team for a bit is all that it takes to become a club legend then presumably the Brazilian Ronaldo is a Barcelona legend despite only being there for a season.

Ole was a legend because how he always provided legendary moments for the club, loved the club and sacrificed himself for the club. Those three criteria makes a player a legend for me.

Ronaldo had legendary moments bt he did not love the club, and only sacrificed things for his own glory while spitting in the club face that helped make him into the player he was.

I stand corrected. His early years in United must have slipped my mind. To give Ronaldo a credit, he started as a winger and teenager. His 4th season is where he started to explode as a goal scorer. It is both ironic and tragic that Ronaldo was still our league's top scorer after he left us 12 years ago.

He's the best player I've ever seen for us in my 25+ years supporting the club. His 06-09 years were unreal. Really exciting to watch, while also being extremely efficient. He is a big reason why we won so many trophies during that period. I still won't call him a legend, because he gave his absolute best years to Madrid. He is their legend.

He was fecking amazing for us during 06-09, though. His return was a mistake, and he's been huge cnut recently, but I can't forget the great years.

No, you can’t be a club legend if you don’t respect the club. It just ruins all his accomplishments.

He is a stain on Man United as far as I am concerned.

I would have Ole as a legend. That goal in 99 and then the fact that his entire career for us was more or less as a super sub, but without any complaints or anything, and he was extremely lethal when subbed on.
The others I agree with you.

I think you'll find he's done a lot of good work in Portugal, so maybe not the biggest twat, but he has seemed intent on at the very least challenging for the title in the past few weeks! Anyone who claims he wasn't sensational in his first stint at OT, however, wasn't watching or is rewriting history

A lot has already forgotten about Best being a big cnut in his final years with us too. Which makes me wonder how people would see Ronaldo in years to come.

Best in his glory days with us: (legend worthy)
- Ballon D’or winner x1, 3rd place x1
- 179 goals in 470 games
- CL x1
- League title x2
- Overall trophies x5
- was regarded as most gifted footballer and first pop star of football
- spend majority of his peak years with us

Ronaldo in his glory days with us: (legend worthy)
- Ballon D’or winner x1, 2nd place x1
- 145 goals in 346 games
- CL x1
- League titles x3
- Overall trophies x9
- was regarded as GOAT/ most followed person in the world
- turn down the chance to play for a more successful rival, and move back to us instead during his 2nd stint

Best in his fallen days with us:
- late night drinking problems
- missed many training sessions
- get suspended by the club numerous times for missed training sessions while found dating with other female celebrities in much publicized way.
- keep missing more training sessions and found guilty of breaking a girls nose in nightclub brawl
- walked out on the manager/the team after getting dropped, and made claim about the manager being deceitful with him
- has been toxic in dressing room, not speaking with teammates he considered as inferior, failed to turn up to Charlton testimonial match etc
- was arrested and get charged for stealing, but was later cleared of all charges. The club went on to suffer relegation on the following season.

Ronaldo in his fallen days with us:
- Request for transfer during his peak to join another club in his first stint
- Again request for transfer for CL football in his 2nd stint
- Left early in a preseason game
- refuse to play in final minutes for a game, walked out on the manager/the team, get fined and suspend by the club
- Undermined the club/manager, speaking against the club and the manager in his much publicized interview, making claims of feeling betrayed, no respect, substandard training facilities, and the club being run as commercial club etc
- also causing unwanted distraction to the club, speaking against his ex-teammates and ex-manager in much publicized interview

I'm sure Real fans will always look at him favourably.
