This fella is out of contract in the summer. He has fallen behind Rodrygo and Valverde (who often plays as a right winger) in the pecking order at Madrid and there has been some discontent there about that.

Now before anyone gets too excited, I should emphasise that he has recently iterated that his priority is to remain at Real, but that’s not totally in his hands. It’s not sure if he will be offered a new contract there.

There was rumour that he was being offered to us for £25m last summer. Arsenal and Arteta are big fans and there’s rumours Barca might be sniffing around too.

He is only 26, a starter for Spain, a left-footed right winger, a guy with impeccable pedigree who has won everything. If Real show him the door, should we move for him? We have Antony for the right wing, but surely we lack genuine depth given Elanga some times starts for us on the right.

What say the Caf? Worth a punt?

I’m sure I saw him being interviewed saying he wants to sign a new deal (and stay there forever) and his representatives are in contact with Madrid

Yeah, the link to that interview is literally in the OP. However there’s no certainty Real want to keep him atm. And the question is, should we go for him if they decide they don’t want to give him a new contract?

Ah right - so you are aware it’s a pointless discussion

Never really materialised with the potential he first broke through with. Kind of just has a good long range powerful shot and that’s about it

He’s a nifty dribbler too. You’re right though, he never really reached the heights expected from his first breakthrough. The standards at Real are incredibly high too.

I guess the question is do you think the player he ended up becoming, can still be of value to us?

Leaving Madrid, available on a free. Any interest? He was hot shit a few years ago. I haven't paid much attention but he just seems to be a squad player these days.

He never really took the next step.
He's not a great player but he's provided a decent amount of goals the last few seasons.

He was a massive talent. Got a big injury which hampered him massively and stripped him of his raw pace. Big shame as he really looked like he could be something special.

i'd sell Sancho and Elanga and sign this guy to be a squad winger this summer. We could reinvest the Sancho/Elanga funds in a striker that's going to cost us 80m +.

On Asensio He'd be a solid 4th or 5th option out wide with Garnacho and Rashford on the left and Antony and Amad on the right with Asension able to be cover in both positions.

Sort of player Newcastle should be all over really. Help boost their depth for the CL a little while keeping their transfer budget for those big signings.

The reason he wants to leave Real is to be a more important member of the team. I don't see why he'd leave being a backup option at Real to be a backup option for us.

Fair point.

I do think we should try and sell 2 of our wingers and sign a winger on a free this summer. Zaha would be another great option imo as i know he's desperate to play in the champions league and could cover left wing, right wing, and cf in a pinch.

We need 5 or 6 players in the front positions with two being able to play up front. I wouldn't put my money on Martial being available and fit. Weghorst and Elanga won't be staying and rightfully so with Pellistri probably going on loan. This leaves Antony, Sancho, Rashford, Garnacho and a new signing with Amad probably trusted to fill in when necessary. I just don't think we can find a good option with Sancho and he will probably be trusted to show his quality one more season.

He’s not leaving Madrid to be 4th or 5th option   Plus he’ll be looking for £200,000 a week plus no doubt so no thank you .

He's good a marvellous left foot good for at least ten goals a season. But he's never been the same player after tearing his ACL.

I can see him staying in Spain and playing for Barcelona or Atletico.

The injury caused him to miss the bulk of the 19/20 season.

But he wasn't great in 17/18 and 18/19 seasons either.

Some of you are really underrating him. While he never lived up to his potential, he is still a really good and versatile footballer.
On a free, I'd take him in a heartbeat.
He's stepped up a level this season as well after the last few disappointing seasons, and he has 9 goals and 6 assists in 1400 minutes in La Liga this season.

He could be Bruno's back up, play CM or even right winger as Real Madrid play him often.

The injury hasn't altered his career much. He's the same player now as he was in 2019

The problem is that he's fantastic squad option and supersub - game changing even, but he's just a fairly average player if he starts the game

If his attitude is right I think he'd be a gamble worth taking to be honest, especially if Sancho is moved on. Wages would have to be sensible though.

Before ETH I’d say I’ve had my fill of players that are leaving Madrid reluctantly, but ETH has changed the game. Not worth throwing an obnoxious contract at him however and I think that’s what he’ll want. Also not sure he can mentally handle having the s*** kicked out of him for 90 minutes in the Premier League.

He'll be dining out on that 6 month period of shit hottery for the remainder of his career.
