I think finance came into the equation there as well.

Who knows how much Haaland and his family got from City. They don't get that if he comes to United. Same with Bellingham as well I'd imagine.

And there's no way Haaland wouldn't have been first choice here. Same with Bellingham.

I'd also add Timber doesn't have their profile. He's an easy get if we really want him.
We should have got Haaland at Molde for peanuts

Thinking about our situation at the back and I really hope we are back in for Timber in the summer. We are in a unique position of having a world class CB pairing but sadly due to Varane’s fitness issues need quality cover at the RCB position. We also need another quality option at RB. And I imagine Timber would look absolutely mint there tucking in and providing quality in the buildup when Varane is fit.

I’m not sure where I see him longterm. Perhaps that depends on who else we acquire and/or the development of Ethan Laird. But I think he will be brilliant whether it be RB or CB and his signing would go a long way toward maximizing Varane’s final years at the top. It almost seems a bit hilarious at this point going back to the Ajax well once again, but Timber’s quality and versatility make him the best option out there for us IMO. Add Ndicka on a free and we are set until Varane’s time comes.

I agree.

I think people just watching Timber this fall might be a little concerned, because he hasn’t been at his best. Ajax have struggled. He wasn’t great for the Netherlands in his last game (in which he kept De Light on the bench, which is impressive in itself).

But remember — this is a really young kid for an established CB at the highest level. He is still only 22 y/o. He lost his more experienced partner in Martinez. Ajax have played the same number of games we have this season.

Jurrien Timber has this season played roughly 1,850 minutes this year, Diego Dalot in comparison has played 1,700 minutes. And Timber is two years younger than Dalot.

When I watch Timber play this fall, he does well, he as mentioned put a world star CB like De Ligt on the bench the other day, but 100% he is a little tired, a little worn out. Anything else would be really strange to be honest.

And honestly, with a guy like Timber, it’s sometimes questioned if he would be fine going to a club where he wouldn’t start every game. But often, it can be the complete opposite.

To become an elite footballer in today’s game, you need to have had an extremely ambitious and rigorous training regime. When you come in to pro football and play constantly, you all of a sudden don’t even remotely get sufficient time to recover, not to mention keep developing your game. Constant pain is definitely a problem for many, ankles, the back area.

Of course there is an element of ‘everyone wants to start all games’, but at the bottom line I don’t think everyone are scared away by the prospect of perhaps not getting 50 games early on a new contract, with the risk of perhaps have to settle for 20-30 games instead.

I think it’s perfect for Timber to come here and be ‘eased’ into the PL behind Varane/Dalot.

Lastly, Ajax don’t want to sell Timber because they see him as someone who has potential to become the best CB in the game. Like say a Cannavaro. Fabrizio talked about that like a month or two ago. But they have just overused him this year. Like what, two more games than Dalot, and we all know how much Dalot has played. There is perhaps a slight hope that this will back fire with Timber in the summer forcing through a transfer. It’s just not sustainable to use a player as much as they are using Timber. And especially not a 21 y/o.

Granted I have not watched too much of him, but I am always coming away from games especially this WC thinking he was not very impressive compared to Martinez who has that innate aggression that makes up for his size. Glad we got the argentine!

I have watched some videos of him doing good dribbles and showing nice composure & passing but feel like we do need height pace & strength at RCB with Martinez already here and Timber apparantly being 5"8.

Was excited by signing him in the summer but from what i've seen on this stage I am not as keen to bring him here in the future. Think getting a pacey natural RB back up to dalot like Frimpong and a taller, faster, stronger successor to Varane will be smarter.

Dalot killed the need for him. Can’t see him coming in and being a back up for CB and RB

Thought he made some good tackles on the ground, but he also gave away 5 fouls and was booked. Wouldnt have been far off getting a 2nd.

If that story is true about him rejecting United so that he'd play in the World Cup (not saying it is, but if) then I hope he feels like a massive fanny now. Especially with Lisandro Martinez (his supposed alternative) lifting it.

In what sense? It was reported that he was worried he might spend a lot of time on the bench as a new player at United, and that that might put his selection for the national team at risk. Instead, he stayed at Ajax, was selected, and played all but one game at the WC. There's no telling what would have happened had he joined United, but at least he wasn't wrong about the idea to stay at Ajax to be certain to play at the WC.

I’d argue that his decision is vindicated massively by the fact he was first choice at the World Cup.

I dont think he's played well enough, for club or national team to regard the hype he gathered. Gvardiol is the new shinny toy.

Not a massive fanny but I’d question his self belief which would be a bit of a concern.

I felt Ake and VVD outshone him quite a bit in that Dutch defence and that Dumfries was probably the defender that impressed the most. Not sure about Timber yet but he's still very young

Think he looks really talented and disagree about him not showing aggression. Personally dont think we should sign him as two small centre backs is a concern and for right back I want us to sign a proper right back. FOr me he is too good and also two expensive to be signing as a utility player. WIth what we have already paid for two Ajax players, surely again they would be looking for a similar fee to Martinez? I think we can sign quality in both the positions people mention with young talent for a similar fee personally, but I do like him

not very impressed by him at the WC. He benefited the leniency of the referees letting him do dozens of fouls every game without getting booked. This would never happen at Premier League, pretty sure any ref would be tired of his constant fouling after the 3rd consecutive foul.

How's he been getting on? I keep forgetting about him, but he's the likely two-in-one deal, who'd probably come more into consideration as a right back. Maybe moot point if Ajax have similar valuations they had last summer, but an interesting player already up to speed with the manager's style of course.

Why would he be considered as a RB when he does'nt play there for his own club and the league he plays in is far inferior to England?

I can't see us buying another short CB. I was never one to criticize or be concerned with Martinez's height, but I think a CB pairing in the premiere league needs at least one player with height.

Could he be the kind of player to be utilized as a starting RB who moves into a dm position in posession. Kind of like we saw Malacia(and also Shaw to some extent when Malacia was subbed) do against Leeds do last weekend? Admit i haven’t watched him thst much, but seems he has at least had exposure in all the required positions, and has the passing ability for such a role. Would he be good enough to also play as an overlapping rb, or would that be a limitation for him?
With him one side and Shaw on the other, we’d have two full backs who’d comfortably slot into a back 3 while the other is attacking, giving a bit of flexibility in the setup of the dm/cm position.

Wouldn’t rule him out as our main rb target.

If we want a RB/CB then Mohamed Simakan should be under consideration.

Agreed. I also don't see Timber making up for his lack of height as efficiently as Licha does.

He does have less of a lack of height to make up for though.
That is true. Might sound stupid but having 175cm and 182cm centre-backs doesn't fill me with confidence, I see Licha as the anomaly. Varane complements him perfectly, would ideally like to see us sign a younger "Varane" to play next to Licha for the coming years. I'm also not convinced that Timber would become a star in the PL, although I've probably only seen about five full games of him at Ajax.

he just signed new deal though last summer. So I expect more expensive than what Ajax asked for last year.

This is how a lot of teams have been playing lately. City especially.

We often do it with our full backs moving into a box. A sort of 3-2-4-1 when attacking.

I wonder if this lad is regretting his decision now. Shouldn’t have listened to LvG

Especially on set pieces, you need some height on the pitch.

It’s interesting that when we were linked to Timber, we were also linked to 6’3 RB Thomas Meunier. Don’t think that was a coincidence.

I reckon we'll defintelly go back in for him, he can cover at RB and CB which is a huge asset and Ten Hag knows his game to a tee.

It would be a lot more surprising if we weren't still interested in Timber.

I don't see us spending significant money on a back-up RCB. Varane is only 29 and has that spot nailed.

I also think Varane-Martinez partnership is significantly better than Timber-Martinez. It's more balanced in terms of height that's for sure.
