No way he lives the next 7 years in Saudi Arabia.

Over time his family, particularly the women in his family won't be able to tolerate the restrictions.
He won't have to. He will just be an ambassador, go there a few times per year to take some pictures, record some videos and the rest of the work he will do outside SA, probably just using his social media to post whatever Saudis ask him to.

What else is left? As @Ish pointed out, he can't do it football-wise. His legacy can't be improved there because he's already lost the Ballón d'Or race, lost the golden boots race, retired with the most disappointing world cup career out of the greats and has no chance to remedy that, has watched his closest rival put the dagger in him by leading his country to the world cup at nearly 36. He's not going to bridge the deficit in trophies.

There's not much he can do to improve his football legacy at this point. All he can focus on is money, and good for him.
Yeah, as some have pointed out “he has nothing left to prove”. Hell go down as an all time great - yeah outside of a minority of die-hard fans he’s not in the top 3 discussion IMO, but just to have been in the discussion itself is testament to his drive, determination and accomplishments.

His ego won’t allow him to be a bit part player, let alone earning under £100k per week, so best case scenario is to have his ego “stroked” by becoming the highest paid player in the world - possibly retiring as the richest footballer ever. On top of his already “one of the all time greats” discussion. It’s possibly even good for his mental health to get out of the limelight in Europe for a while as he’s had quite a fall from grace over the past 6-12 months.

Same as Beckham was ambassador to Qatar. How many times will he have been there last couple of years?

Seems like a 2-year playing deal and then just acting as an ambassador for the next 5 which means he could live anywhere in the world, really, and just show up for some events, commercials, photo-ops etc.

I know he's 38 but what a fall from grace. Became a football meme in the space of a few weeks and then hightails it to the Middle East to stat pad.
Who knows, he might chase Pele’s record (not official or unrecorded, I think?) of “over 1000 professional career goals” over there! His fans then might want to re-open the GOaT debate

It’s a shame how he’s ending his career. In a way he’s punishing himself for being in such good shape at 38 because he’s still trying to push true top level of the sport but just isn’t able to. Messi won’t be playing PL football or even La Liga football at his age.

In hindsight he should signed for 1 year at United, shown he can still perform at this level then get off to the US or even Saudi last summer.

It’s a big ask, regardless of the level, but it has to be on his mind. He should, at least, try!

What a spectacular fall from grace. Looks like he's going over there with his tail between his legs (and a ton of money as well). I bet if he could do a redo he'd never do that interview with Piers.

Going from Martial's backup to Aboubakar's backup. Progress!

At this point It could be which channel will offer him the most to be a pundit?

He wont go into punditry. He is more likely to go the Beckham route of getting TV ads for underwear and cologne.

Wherever he ends up I hope he doesn't get shown the same disrespect that United, Real, Juventus, United again and Portugal have shown him.

I agree, I mean he has regressed a little bit each year since leaving Madrid, but as we saw last season, he was still good enough for the top level. But the drop this season is just that little bit much where bar aerially he is just a yard off the pace mentally for the top level and what with all the off field antics and that interview.....really the sad thing is, does anybody really even care where he goes now.....and that is one of the best players of all time

He signed a deal to promote Saudi Arabia’s 2030 World Cup bid.
Messi is the ambassador for the Argentina, Uruguay bid to host the 2030 world cup.
However, he had previously signed a deal to be the ambassador for Saudi TOURISM and he has begun promoting it.

What a waste.
1. Still interesting to see if he can hack it in Europe. Who cares about Saudi Arabia?
2. Ridiculous amount of money to spend on the Saudi Arabian league. Might as well get a Haaland.
3. How can a Portuguese with zero ties to SA be their ambassador?
The whole thing is bonkers.

Carlos Tevez was the highest paid player in the world playing somewhere in China. Nobody cared, it wasn't interesting. It was stupid. He moved back to Argentina and helped Boca win a title. Ronaldo should do that. This is a farce.

Ridiculous amount of money he'll be getting is probably enough to feel better after a terrible year he's head. I wouldn't rule out Ronaldo signing for an European club in a year or two either, him trying to be relevant again.

Shows his whole "United aren't in the UCL and I have to play in the UCL" stuff was all empty bullshit.

His ego has landed him in one of the world's worst countries, playing in a league no one watches, for money, which he already has several hundred million of.

The only news you will hear is when he goes on an eight game drought and everyone laughs at him.

Wonder what Keane will say, now his boy is playing amateur level football for money where in his opinion he should be starting every week for United.

What are the odds of Sky/BT acquiring tv rights for Saudi league just so people can watch Ronaldo?
