Martial's life cycle:

1. Comes back from injury, plays few very good games and scores some important goals
2. Goes quiet for few games but scores an odd goal or two so we are all convinced he'll start playing well
3. One or two games where he stops running or doing anything to remind us he is actually on the pitch
4. Gets injured again combined with breaking up with his girlfriend/contract renewal or something like that, while his fans convince us he is World Class and that we don't need new striker because there aren't many strikers in the world as he is

Rinse and repeat
Pretty much this. He wasn't good enough for Sevilla on loan so I don't know why people thought he would suddenly become great.

Martial being able to lead our line is the very epitome of a triumph of hope over experience.

He wasn’t poor today but he does not look like a natural striker
Linked up the play and held up the ball well
Needs a worldie goal for his confidence

Doesn't do enough sadly. Also looks to have lost his ability to run with the ball, I remember he used to be a different beast a few years back with the ball on his feet. I wonder if the injuries have destroyed his ability to run at pace

There are still so, so many posts on the forum talking about how the striker signing is a “backup for when we have a run of games”

It is definitely not. Martial is not a number 9 and shouldn’t be in the first eleven. He is a useful squad player, but whoever comes in should absolutely be the starter. There is no question.

Thought he was okay (6/10).

Were guilty of thinking that strikers score boat loads of goals, link play, spray passes about. It doesn’t happen outside of the games alien players.

Zlatan, Rooney, Rashford, Ighalo, Cavani all put those sort of performances in with regularity. It’s the life of a striker

He's nothing more than a placeholder and he's doing an adequate job till the club finds some money to buy a striker.

He takes up weird positions for a centre forward. And the runs he makes at times - or doesn’t make - are baffling.

He can be a lot better than tonight. I also think he still actually has some major development left in him. He needs to stay fit. He’ll keep getting games until we sign someone better and he’ll start scoring again, it’s what happens after that that will define his time here

I don't think we make it easy for our centre forwards to be honest as it seems to be a graveyard shift for most players that are up there, but yeah he's definitely not the long term solution. Hope he's not badly injured however.

The less he plays the better he gets. Started playing again and we remembered why he isn't so highly thought of by most. Another knock too, what a surprise.

Hopefully we look beyond him next season. This is his 8th season for us and he still plays like a 19 year old.

Didn't see the game but I always hope he plays well in particular because we're fecked in this department if he's injured.

I still feel we need this guy to play a big part if we're going to have a very good season and that's even if we manage to get another striker on loan.

Is he the most frustrating player that we’ve had since Nani?

Looks world class in moments, or on his day, but constantly falls short and is injured. And those moments or games are few and far between but just tease what a potential ceiling he could have had.

Is this lad still on more than Salah? Yeah unfortunately we aren’t in a position to get a first choice 9 to replace him but hopefully whoever we bring in ends up taking that place for six months. Bringing someone in and they end up being only good enough to back up Martial for six months would be disappointing.

Nani was A LOT more consistent than Martial….

His link up play was great tonight even if his finishing wasn't, a big improvement from his performance against Wolves.

I think we can use an upgrade on him but currently he is very important for our attack. His hold up play and link up mades a lot of difference for our attack.

I wasn't really impressed but he is the only one we have in that position at the moment so we just have to hope he gets better with more game time and that is guaranteed so long as he stays fit.

Nah he ain't no number 9. We need a decent striker who can hold up the ball and get involved in the game.

I always thought Martial was at his best playing off the left and coming in to score with his right like an inside forward. Sadly we're way too stacked on that side so he's our stop gap for now.

Am I the only one who thought he did pretty well? Fluffed his header but his overall play I think he did decent

Another subpar game. We need a new 9. He just doesn't cut it anymore.

Strikers need to score. That's the harsh reality. Fluffed that header at 2-0 and immediately after Bournemouth could have been back in the game but for De Gea.

We will sign a striker this month in sure. I'm expecting a beanpole to come in tbh.

He’s become a very neat & tidy player. Good touch, holds the ball up well, links with others, drops deep and gets involved in the buildup etc It’s all decent stuff, nothing bad about it per se…but my god I miss the young exciting Martial we first signed. That kid would put you on the edge of your seat every time he got the ball. Now it’s all just very ‘meh’. Like switching from planet rock to classical FM. It’s nice, it’s pleasant. But it’s not exciting.

I don't even know what to make of him anymore, is he not up to full fitness? How much does he care? He looks slow and not sharp, I don't know what that is down to, lack of match fitness or that's the Martial remaining now.
We really need him to start putting chances away, could be the difference between a decent season and a great season.

I thought he was a lot sharper in this game compared to his previous couple. It was a poor miss from Casemiro's cross but it's good that he's getting himself into those positions. I suspect he'll get better quickly provided that the knock he took was nothing serious.

I prefer to think that Martial's just gaining match fitness these past few games after a stop-start beginning to the season. But we most certainly need to bring in a #9 and if he's going to choke because of the competition then he doesn't belong here.

Every time I think that we have to rely on him until the end of the season, I die a little bit inside.

Said the same of Martial for years now and it never changes

He simply does not score important goals.
And you cannot rely on him to win you matches

As a striker here you don’t need 25 goals every season but you need to win United matches.

Hughes, Cole, Tevez etc. Even when they weren’t scoring for fun, they’d still score important goals.

I don't see what our manager sees in him. I suppose he's the only one who vaguely fits the description of a striker.

We link together 3-5 one touch passes with our much improved midfield (and even back line) just to send him a ball to give it away. I disagree with any post talking about his holdup play. It's among the worst I've seen any top club try to depend on.

He is a left winger and far inferior to Rashford. Frankly he's playing out of position but there's no way forward to higher highs for us with him in the lineup on a regular basis. Especially not at the #9.

We desperately need a Forward and a backup forward to push to higher levels.

This is just incorrect on almost every level.

I’d like to see Brighton’s number 9 at United. Giving him some competition for his place. It’s demented how few options we have in that position. Fergie must be absolutely raging. He could never have enough strikers and we’ve barely got one of them.
Trossard?

I like him too.

He looks quite a bit slower and less agile than he used to. He doesn't seem to have the acceleration to go on those mesmerising dribbling runs he used to. I've always liked him but sadly he looks like a player who will never reach the heights he could have. Feels like he's lost that all-important edge of physicality.
