Man got carried by the Ajax attack. He will play better with Dalot, he will play better with a striker who he can cross to and now its he doesn't have to score or assist. Its the strikers fault that Antony isn't performing. So if we had someone like Haaland banging them in Anthony's performances would be justified?
No. If he's playing well he's playing well. The point is that "playing well" is about more than goals and assists. If it wasn't, ETH wouldn't have brought him here in the first place.

Players who are "carried" by their teammates are rarely so beloved by their manager that they then sanction a 100m deal to bring them along to their next club. I'm pretty sure Ten Hag understands how that Ajax attack worked better than you do.

Ancelotti absolutely loved James Rodriguez didn't change the fact that he was below par. Sometimes a manager just likes a player. So far Antony has been very poor and if his best is a variation of what we are seeing he will be overtaken by the likes of Amad.

Claiming that Antony doesn't need goals or assists if the team is performing well is a bizarre way of spreading the blame for his poor performances across the team. We lack goals as a team, and a better striker would go some way to addressing this but it will never be fully resolved if one of our wide forwards doesn't contribute enough.

Hopefully he will improve but it is concerning that he doesn't appear to have any strengths beyond work rate. He isn't quick enough, his crossing is poor and his shooting is mostly poor

Yeah, end of the season seems fair. Although, Mudryck who is a similar position, same age and similar price did well on his debut - whether that is a one off or not remains to be seen I guess. It doesn’t have to take a season to get going in a new league.

I have to agree with you on this. A few games - yes (look at Lisandro). One season - hmm, probably not (look at Mkhitaryan).

I keep reading people say we play better when he's in the team. I genuinely don't think we'd have been any worse if ETH had just played Pellestri and told him to hug the touch line. Not saying we'd be better I must stress but it wouldn't have been any worse. The bar hasn't been set very high after all.

He's got serious serious work to do before May to convince me he's good enough for us. So far it's looking another very expensive mistake.

Not much point whinging about him now as we are stuck with him.
I just hope that Erik picks players on merit and not price tag as Erik may be stubborn and keep picking him because it was his call to bring him here and yet Pellistri may be a better option.

I don’t even care about goals necessarily, he just isn’t involved enough. And then every time he did get on the ball yesterday I was just waiting for him to lose it.
Agree with this. I hate when people counter arguments against the criticism by saying it’s because of xG.

He literally just isn’t effective enough in our attacking play. He’s playing Wembley singles.

I disagree I think a player ought to show glimpses at best, but accomodating to a different footballing culture, environment and tactical influence can take time. Pep has spoken very prominently about the differences of managing in England and elsewhere. Klopp has done the same. One of Grealish's recent post match interview (against Spurs) he spoke about how hard he has found adaptation to the demands and responsibilities of Peps system. It's not just about the league, it's also the team, the shape and the philosophy. We fans generalise the transition to English football but the specific team in question is important. ETH seemingly vehemently sought after Gakpo and he's looked disappointing for Liverpool but that doesn't necessarily reflect how he could have performed at United.

The issue is United are in a transition and period of change where players aren't awarded time from the fans because of the expectation that the changes need to be immediate and impactful. The lack of competitiveness over the years doesn't help, a player that requires time to develop is less of a burden in a functioning winning team compared to one trying to establish themsebles. The reality is it's an unrealistic view. There are too many factors that accommodate a players form for their to be a black and white answer.

Dalot is a great example, he showed absolutely nothing aside a few step overs and a change of pace on the right wing in the first 12 months and was absolutely awful defensively in various performances. Didn't do anything of note on loan, time passes he comes back to the latter end of Solskjaer's tenure doesn't play much. ETH comes in and he (putting it lightly) hits the ground running. Could probably even be said to be one of the best fullbacks in the prem this season on form. It's impossible to track that type of progress like a case study.

I think the fans need to have patience with certain players. The only area I can see where a player should be expected to have a faster rate of implementation into a team is when they are already purchased from the league. I think this is where Liverpool had good success with the likes of Mane, Robertson and VVD. But players coming from the Bundesliga, Eredvise, Serie A etc should be given more leeway.

From someone who absolutely understands talent. Antony is a bigger natural talent than both Sancho and Saka. Antony and Sancho are both better natural talents than Saka but they're not as strong. The good thing is they're still young enough to add that to their game the way Rashford has and I believe they'll be frightening players.

A good blueprint is Mahrez. When he arrived at city he was a skinny guy who barely played. Second season he looked a lot stronger and look at him now.

Mahrez arrived at City as player of the year, having won the title with Leicester. There's no comparison.

Antony is better than what we're seeing. However, he has to show it. His attempted dribbles are massively down since he played at Ajax. He's playing within himself, he's being ultra conservative and, worryingly, he doesn't seem like he trusts himself to take on a fullback. Even if he's given space to run into.

That's not good enough at Man Utd. Basically, every game he plays, Garnacho shows Antony up. Garnacho has far less experience of top flight football. He just looks like he's more willing to try. Even Pellistri looks more direct.

The best thing you can say about Antony is he plays Ten Hag's shape work to a tee. When we're hogging the ball that's a help. However, besides that, I am struggling.

I will preface this by saying I hope he comes good. We've had plenty of players come in and take time to settle in and improve. However at the moment I've seen nothing from to suggest there is a significantly better player in there. People who also think he's a better player than Sancho are crazy. Sancho's stats are significantly better over a longer period of time and in a stronger league. It's not like Antony was even putting up Gakpo or Depay type numbers for Ajax.

You mean the Mahrez that was already one of the best players in the league and a main component of Leicester’s title-winning team? Really?

He has been poor so far but I will have more patience with him.

Clearly, Ten Hag knows him, he has worked with him before so he knows what kind of player he is and can be.

I will trust Ten Hag to get this right, people can question Antony but in reality, our attack is not firing, once we start firing, he will be fine.

Think people are being harsh on him still. Price was high but his age is a big factor. He’s good on the press and works hard defensively but we lack goals in general in our team - Rashford aside. We’ve scored less than Newcastle.

He doesn’t have the out and out pace we really needed which is why I’d prefer someone like Osimhen than Kane - feel like 2 of a front 3 have to be quick in modern football unless we have complete possession domination.

Not sure what you've been smoking mate. Antony isn't a better natural anything compared to Saka.

What are you even basing this on other than blinkered bias towards a player who plays for us. There's absolutely no way on earth you'd say this if Saka played for us and Antony played for Arsenal.

Don't get why people are writing him of so quickly. Despite not hitting the heights his price tag fools us into expecting, he's still made so good contributions.

I see this as a transition season for the club and many players. He's adaptiy to a new league, a new type of opponent.

A serious question- if you would buy antony from flamengo for 2m, and he would play like he is playing right now, would you consider it as the bargain of the century? Or prefer garnacho and send antony on loan elsewhere to develop?

Support the players...he has only been here a few months.

Yes it's frustrating to watch at the moment, but plenty of players have come back from a worst position to the one Antony finds himself in currently.

Our squad over the decade has been full of players who talked the talk but couldn’t walk the walk. I don’t remember during Fergie’s tenure, players talking anywhere near as much. Those guys did the talking on the pitch.
Because back then it was very common for all the players to have their own direct communication channels where they could make statements like that outside of through club press conferences?

He has talent but agree this is massively underrating Saka who is a phenomenal player and a year younger.

Mahrez was Leicesters best player in their historic title winning season. Good lord. And that's not even the most embarrassing thing you said in this post.

There were no social media back then, only like Myspace & Orkut, but nothing as such as now.

Well, apparently he is "someone who absolutely understands talent" so he obviously knows what he is talking about

Talks, a good talk.
Uh oh, Antony's Social Media Fan Sentiment Graphs must have nose-dived. Thankfully, the club spends smart money on a team of slimy cnuts top industry professionals to trick gullible fans to counter the narrative in a bespoke process.

This club is a fecking headwreck sometimes.

Some comments are ridiculous. I once told my arsenal supporting friend that Saka would develop into a very good player when he was still in the academy. I know Antony has even more potential… he has scored the exact same goal Saka scored on the weekend a few times himself(against none other than Man City). Van der sar said they didn’t want to sell Antony because they felt he could develop into a world class player.

He was just saying whatever would get us to spend more money.
