Turned it on to see how he’s doing and he gets injured and comes off within a couple of minutes.

He was playing really well before that. Looked like he pulled a muscle so probably out for 3 weeks unfortunately.

It w

It was MUTV doing it when he played!!
I think it was said that a family member of the player contacted the club and took issue with the pronunciation of his name on MUTV. MUTV then started calling him Sho ra teeray.

It is a Yoruba name and i suspect Shola himself isn’t fluent in the language. His parents contacted MUTV to correct them about the pronunciation of the name which Shola himself apparently does not know.

It is Show-Ray-Ti-Reh.

His dad's on the forum, surely we can just ask him to clear it up.

Gaz. Is a Mewling Quim.
Ok normally your parents call your by your name tends to get in by the years. But ok
That would make sense if it were the forename, but it’s a surname so more like to be heard regularly by the likes of teachers or peers, who won’t be aware of the origins of the name and often anglicise it. Or the child won’t have the same connection to the original name which represents a large part of the identity to the parents so will just go with whatever people say.

That is the correct pronunciation Incase anyone was wondering. And yes, Shola doesn't seem fluent in the language, which is not surprising. I have seen similar Yoruba kids who mispronounce their own names - some even preferring the westernized pronunciation over the Yoruba pronunciation. Suppose that's the case with our lad here.

That might be but at least in my youth I heard my full name a lot. Most of the time in the higher register.

Absolutely, when you were doing something wrong you got your full name yelled at you still the time.
Not in Yoruba culture. His parents would not be yelling out his full name (especially surname) no matter what he did.

These names still have meanings that are easily understood by people who speak the language unlike Western names.

You have got to understand the language for it to make sense enough in order to pronounce it right though. Shore-Tyre or Sure-Tyre has no meaning and it’s basically a nonsense word.

His parents would pronounce it Show-Ray-Ti-Reh.

Not doubting that for a minute. I will have to admit my absolute lack of knowledge for the West African language and dialects and the way it is pronounced.

Bolton manager after the game;
" Shola was just a bang on his back and it has gone into spasm. I don’t think it is too bad but you never know "

Doesn't look like there's been any update since then.

You'd think his parents might have had a word with him ahead of telling MUTV!

It is HIS name so I'd tend to go with the way he himself pronounces it

Anyway nice to see he went straight into the Bolton team for a couple of wins, hopefully the injury isn't too bad

I get that "shore tyre" is an anglicised version and not the original pronunciation, but surely if that's how he says it then that's how we should be saying it as well?

Obviously he would know the Yoruba pronunciation if his parents do, perhaps he just prefers to say it this way
