It wasn't very progressive he put us under pressure with his hit and hope distribution at times today.

2 good saves but they were poor finishes better players put them away comfortably. And we would be looking at why we come under so much pressure and couldn't build or sustain attacks and some of that was because De Gea's distribution was pretty poor.

But today Dave made the saves, deserves the credit and we move on.
Can you point to major examples of his poor distribution putting us under pressure today? Or are you just trotting out the standard narrative

"You just need average level shot stopping, other areas are more important in the modern days"

"DDG old fashioned keeper"

Right. Average shot stopping today would've conceded both goals today and we would have lost that one.
His saves were sensational today and earned us points.

But we're not even outperforming our xGA in any of the last 3 seasons. His reputation as a shot stopper is living off the past, he's statistically fairly average in that department. Keepers are meant to make saves.

I actually can't believe in a game we win 3 where he made two top class saves in the first 15 20 mins to keep it nil nil some people are complaining about his distribution. He hardly even had a touch 2nd half, the ball barely went into our own half.

Shite again. Misplaced pass after misplaced pass, didn't come off his line again. We would've won by more if we had any of the three Nottingham forest keepers instead of him.

Trying to be sarcastic while using Navas who won 3 CLs in a row as one of the examples isn't going to do you any favours.

Great first half. Happy for him, just 1 more to beat Schmeichels record now. Don't think he's anything more than average now but will always appreciate him for his career here. Glad he's finally in a competent team at the end of his time here at least!

You obviously weren't watching otherwise you'd have seen De Gea catch the ball around the penalty spot, that is 12 yards off his line + there was a big punch from his 6 yard one as well

Simple fact is if he doesn't perform today then we probably lose, he was vital to not let that game get away from us. Made my feelings on him known but he's a United legend in my book.

The away game vs Madrid in 2013 was the best ever I['ve seen from him and probably the best keeping performance.

If this thread was active then, he'd be blamed as the main reason Real dominated the game.

I missed bits of the match but from the parts watched, don't remember a single bad or misplaced pass - he swept one out to the wing first time which found its mark. Claimed a cross too. Oh and 2 saves nobody else is making.

These people write their vitriol out before the match starts.

I’ve been one of his biggest critics, but he’s the reason we were still in a game till our opener. Awesome saves. His distribution and kicking was pretty wank though but I’ll take that all day long if it keeps us in a game.

The same Navas Real was trying to replace with De Gea for so many years?

Loved the one where he clawed the ball out of the net. Shades of that Seaman one from 20 years ago against Sheff Utd in the same goalmouth.

I was going to mention that. I almost expect him to make unbelievable saves, but I've always been concerned with his command of his 6 yard box. I thought he should have come and punched Barca's first goal on Thursday, and after seeing him come out today, I think it was something that was stressed to him and worked on during training this week. Today De Gea was solid. People seem to put way to much thought into distribution. His distribution is fine. Sometimes you just have to give it a hoof and it's not always going to go to our players. This is all I can really think of when people say his passing is poor. It's almost as if they are looking for it...

He's already won a major trophy with us but I wouldn't give to see him lift another one while he's still here.

Some fans seem to have invented this fantasy goalkeeper we could replace him with, who will play "modern" football whilst also making all the saves De Gea does, and all the ones he doesn't make as well and making no errors in the process. This goalkeeper doesn't exist, and I think we'll find that out when we have to replace him.
Well said.

You can't buy those sort of saves, and Dave gives us them regularly.

I’ll never forget the post from 3 weeks ago: “David Gea is arguably the worst goalkeeper in the league”.

Another outstanding performance today.

The save from the Iheanacho header was incredible. Much as I do want him replaced, De Gea did come up with two big saves today and without them the complexion of the game might've changed.

Absolutely stupendous performance from Dave there. Amongst the top drawer saves, I also noticed an increased willingness to show for the ball when our defence was pressured and that is something I generally think De Gea needs to improve on.

I’ve been very critical of him and still think he needs to be replaced but credit where credit’s due, today he was fantastic. I would love for him to improve his command of the box as I think it’s his biggest weakness but sadly can’t see that happening at this point in his career.

Or an even more famous save from 30 years before that one.

Credit where it’s due, big Dave has been saving our arse in recent weeks.
Dave has been saving our arses mostly year in year out for over a decade now?

That's the credit he's due :D

Two top saves, personally I'd question his initial positioning on both. Better positioned and he doesn't need the big relfex saves.

Kicking as usual was poor.

Can't complain otherwise.

Can you explain where you want him to be?

Because on the first he positioned himself so that there was only one way the forward could shoot and the second he was near post as the cross came in, scurried across to the far centre and got down quick.

What else do you want from him?

"deserve" is a word I try to use sparingly, but we better win another major trophy while he's still here because he deserves at least one more with us.
