You're kidding, right? We're you around when Cantona joined?
It's an interesting question

Cantona was such an influential player and person..... we should have won the league the year before he joined and would have if not for a punishing schedule at the end of the season when Leeds pipped us. We were in an upward trend under Fergie...FA Cup in 90, CWC in 91, should have won league in 92, league in 93. Nevertheless Eric helped us get over the line. Cantona according to all reports was a fantastic example to the younger Co92 players but, I wonder was he more iconic than influential? I'm sitting here drinking coffee from a Cantona cup as I type and Cantona captured fan culture.

Keane.... well he joined a better team full of top hard pros like Cantona, Hughes, Ince, Bruce, Schmeichal etc - Keane grew up with these kid of guys and was the leader of our team from 98-2003. He was Fergie's man on the pitch setting the standards for other players and he was more of a 'leader' than Cantona for me purely down to his personality. I think that's maybe where Keane's influence was strongest. Creating the culture of always meeting United standards not just in games but in games and everyday life. Keane on Mark Bosnich is an example of how talent wasn't a barometer of being a United quality. It was about approach and attitude.

In terms of being Influential on the pitch....I look at Keane vrs Holland for Ireland, Keane vrs Juve and performances like these are so seldom seen and I can't think of too many performances from single players that compare in terms of influence and leadership. Keane as captain took us to the next level. We were one of the best 2/3 teams in Europe from 99-2002 and we should have maybe won another European Cup.

As I say it's an interesting question and I'm not sold either way. Maybe 6 of one, half dozen of the other

I'm not kidding. I was around then.

Keane was our most important player for over a decade. Rooney is 2nd on PL goals and 3rd on assists. As well he tracked back, got stuck in and won lots of balls.

Cantona was very iconic and charismatic and was a catalyst for first pl titles. Carrick was very influential also. Rio and Vidic too.

My adoration for him hits what I think are lofty heights, then something like this story happens & it just goes up.

He’s an incredible player and an incredible man. The next iteration of that leader on and off the pitch like the likes of Robson, Cantona, Keane etc.

Yeah spot on,bet he feels bad about missing those crucial games against Leeds & Arsenal because that's the guy he is

I’m certain if we had him signed and delivered before the first game of the season we’d either be top or within a point of the leader. People with his work ethic and mentality are so rare (although we used to have them in abundance in Fergie days).

Yeah definitely left wondering why we didn't just bin off De Jong pursuit and sign him in time for Brighton,in fact just thinking about it is frustrating

Winning everything with Real Madrid who, let's face it, are probably the biggest football club in terms of success, not to mention being situated in a beautiful part of Europe, must have been great for him but I think any player will get overwhelmed by the support and adoration that our club gives.

Most of us knew how good a player he was before joining us but it went under the radar because of who was around him and how successful Madrid were, especially in Europe.

There is alot of criticism towards our fanbase in general but having 70k people worshipping you in a stadium is something not many footballers experience.

What a guy

I doubt he actually said this, and the agent is just propping him up as a sole fixer.

I adore Casemiro but I hate these nonsense narratives that he's the one that has single handedly lifted us. And that other players like Bruno were more aggressive and sliding in and hassling the opposition because he's influencing them to.

Playing so casual in the 2nd goal and losing the ball without even caring? What the hell ?

I like him alright, but be ashamed of yourself. His worst performance the entire season.

Thought he was off the pace the first 20+ min and failed to ever really get hold of the game even when it was tight. His worst performance for us, but he’s least of our worries still.

He seemed like he couldn't run. Looked like he was hurt and not moving at all.

Yeah, he didn't look fit. But then again neither half the team so I'm not sure if that was actually the case.

This guy is spent. Should be used as an impact sub at most.
I honestly think posts like this should result in a ban. As for Casemiro, his worst game for us, but he's been immense, so I think we can give him this one.

Looked awful in the first half when the score was 0-0, never mind the 2nd half. 0 successful tackles, 2 interceptions, horrible pass completion 62%.

Klopp was right about his age.
Meanwhile his youngsters Gakpo and Nunez who's made fun of by us showed their class.

Yes mate. A season of Casemiro being brilliant and Nunez and Gakpo being shit is actually undone by one game of the opposite happening.

Genuinely was the worst player on the pitch so clearly something was up
It's not possible for any footballer to be worse than Luke Shaw today.

But a very disappointing game, and to allow this to happen despite him getting all the praise for being a mentality monster, it's disappointing. Just hard to explain really how this could happen.
