Why not sign the lad but loan him back to Brighton for another season

I thought he struggled against our defenders yesterday. Only a young lad though, is understandable but he looked quite raw. He did have some good moments.

Better question is, why do that?

Not only would that eat into our limited transfer budget at a time where we need significant improvements, but his value is already sky high. He won't cost much more next season, why not make the signing then?

A lot could happen in a year that would leave us with egg on our faces, and there isn't any benefit in loaning him back

Also think if we signed him in summer Brighton would rather we just took him so they can move on to the next unearthed gem rather than developing another team's player for a full season, seems at odds with their model entirely.

You are right that is a much better question.

Not the first time I've said this re. these young players, but will he /his agent negotiate a release clause? For the sake of short-term loss (in whatever small percentage of base salary) you'd suffer, if you back yourself and have ambitions to play at a tier A club, why wouldn't you? Haaland could make this a condition for his signing to Dortmund, not exactly the 'smallest fish', and for an release amount lower than Ferguson would even have to demand, so not sure why the likes of Caicedo or Ferguson don't?

One of the Brighton lads on here has covered this fairly well. Long story short is that Brighton don't do release clauses. Ferguson has signed a long term contract very recently but would probably have been on buttons so the club is just using common sense and giving him a salary more commensurate with his new value to keep him onside. If he demanded a release clause they might well have refused to raise his salary and he'd see out his long term contract on the salary of an apprentice. This way both parties can be relatively happy.

Didn't he come off injured last match. Will be some battle v Maguire on Sunday, at least two goals for Evan there.

Suddenly things look so much brighter for ROI in next decade aswell. Under Kenny you've seemingly improved your build up play but have no one who can actually finish.

This lad can and didn't realise until last night that Tom Cannon is playing for Ireland under 21s. He also is a natural finisher and scored about 7 in 12 starts for Preston.

With Nathan Collins improving at the back this actually looks a very decent generation of Irish footballers for first time since late 90s when Duff and Robbie Keane came through.

Maguire is suspended on Sunday, and Ferguson is injured and hasn’t trained at all this week, so is very unlikely to be in the squad let alone start, unfortunately.

8 year deal apparently, no release clause (the club don’t offer them). This is a pay-rise thing to bring his wage up to reflect his new worth to the team.

An 8-year contract is pretty silly.
For who?

The player has no fee to amortise, it secures the player’s value for the club and offers long term security on a good wage at a top half Premier League club for the player. £X per week is £X per week no matter how long the contract is.

It wouldn’t prevent a transfer, as the club would sell if a top club came knocking, the player wanted to go, and the fee was met.

Looks like superb business for everyone involved to me.

Where are people seeing 8 year contract? Brighton statement mentions deal until 2028. That’s a 5 year contract.

You’re quite right, my apologies - looks like I was given some duff information from the embargoed press release.

For the player if he progresses as expected. Declan Rice signed a 7-year contract and he has wanted out for the last couple of seasons but can't because of WHU's asking price.

Ignore that anyway as it seems it's only 5, that's much more reasonable.

Good stuff, let him develop there. No striker should be moving to lead the line at Manchester United after 6 months of first team football.

Given our respective bugets, couldn't we just buy the entire Brighton scouting, recruitment and coaching staff instead of their players ;)

Chelsea already tried that… hasn’t gone brilliantly, if I’m honest.

He'll leave before that term runs out.
He gets a good wage and the club secure a nice fee when he goes.

Martial came here with similar amount of experience.

Ferguson has enough leverage for a release clause, regardless of general policy. He could probably pick amongst at least 4-5 of the top ten clubs in Europe based on current potential and a large but not astronomical release clause- we also know he's a United fan and presumably would like to play for us, based on current general trajectory for both 'parties' so... why not insist on a clause? Didn't stop Dortmund signing Haaland and offering him good money when he insisted on one...

Ah shit, gonna be disappointing to see him lift the Balon D'Or with Brighton.

Will be kind of odd too, but its inevitable.

He'd probably cost more than Kane now.

Shag.

Realistically, he will play 3 years of the 5 year contract, and in 2026, he will be 21, which will be the perfect time, assuming he progresses as expected, to bring him in as one of our leading strikers. How about the following as our first choice strikers:

2023-24: Hojlund (£50m) and Martial
2024-25: Hojlund and Kane (free)
2025-26: Hojlund and Kane
2026-27: Hojlund and Ferguson (£70m)

If Kane is still performing to a high standard, we could potentially push back the Ferguson transfer another year and get him cheaper in the last year of his contract.

If Ferguson is going to be worth £70m after three seasons in the Premier League, and impressive enough for Manchester United to want to sign him, then why not just offer £20-£25m in the summer and get him now? Save yourselves a fortune…

Bonkers!

First of all, he’s not going for 20-25m this summer, you’d ask for north of 60m I can imagine, which is huge money for a teenager - in case of Ferguson it could even make sense as he seems destined for glory and there’s scarcity of strikers, but more importantly I don’t think he’ll get enough minutes at United if he joins this summer. It’s better for him to stay with De Zerbi and continue his excellent development.

Then again, the poster above suggesting we go into next season with Hojlund and Martial as our main strikes probably has it quite wrong

I must admit I was being somewhat facetious with my reply. I agree £60m would be a more likely summer fee, which makes it strange to me that someone would view him as a realistic buy after three hypothetically successful seasons for £70m. If the seasons weren’t successful, why would United or anyone else even want him, let alone for that figure?

I am just very confused at some perceptions and valuations put on players by fans, and how they come to those figures. It feels a bit plucked out of thin air and divorced from logic.
