Donny has a unique ability. I just completely forget he is at the club until I see his name, and I'm like "Oh yeah, I forgot the club had him". Then I completely forget him again shortly after that.
Sounds like dementia...go for a check up.

All for foregrounding skill and movement, but... in terms of physicality and dynamism he makes Mata look like Adama, and the proactivity of his passing makes Cleverly look like Bruno. Sancho's received numerous criticisms, many quite justified, but he's positively penetrative compared to Donny, based on pretty much every genuinely competitive match VDB's played in for us- and under numerous managers

Well he got dropped fairly quickly for Everton and they’re going down. He’s just a woeful footballer who we’ll struggle to sell, and will eventually leave on a free, thus paying 50 million for basically nothing, hence he’ll go down as one of our worst signings.

Championship level is thrown around so much and he’s clearly better than that

There has to be 'something' there, given interest from Madrid, playing in CL semi-final (and not looking conspicuously out of place, from what i can remember) etc, but based on United performances and Everton (at least the televised games) he looks like he'd struggle to make a dent in the championship. Maybe his movement would get him a few goals as a 10, but i'd be surprised if he lasted all season as a regular there; he just gets bullied so easily and doesn't seem to produce very much either under pressure or with time to pick a pass: even his ball striking seems weak, like an u16 player

Is he though? Based on his time at united, I've seen nothing that would suggest so. At best he looks tidy, someone that can keep possession by playing pass and move and playing the least risky pass on to the nearest player. He's genuinely looked awful for us.

IMO, you do squad building the wrong way. Rather than pushing meh player out and replacing him with another different flavor of meh player and hope the new one would improve, why not try to buy a starter CM. That would means Eriksen becomes our rotational CM. We should have buy this CM regardless anyways. Then buy some players like Lavia that with potential to become long term starter. Why waste money on Sabitzer?
Didn’t actually say that we should since Sabitzer. I simply said that a player we signed 4 months ago has done more than him.

I'm still not sure what his best position is?
He makes very intelligent runs around the box, and looks like he could create chances, but in general play away from goal he just doesn't seem to get involved enough. He's a bit of an enigma.
I wish him well, and I hope he gets back to full fitness, but I'm pretty sure his future won't be at Old Trafford

He is a shadow striker. Did very well at Ajax in that role.

Very much so!

I don't think it's a matter of "better". Or worse, for that matter.

I just don't think he's cut out for English football. If anything, he'd be even more of a fish out of water in a lower league. For a start he wouldn't get any European games, and he's tended to look ok-ish in them for us.

Will go down as our worst signing ever. He’s championship level at best.
That's a very confusing phrase.

Since we all agree WW is probably a championship level player, 2-3 years ago he was getting +15G +5A in the bundesliga.

Donny getting good numbers in the Eredivisie too.

So is Championship = Eredivisie = Bundesliga?

Sabitzer being featured would suggest to me that Donny might get another opportunity. very similar players, Sabitzer has a bit more physicality, more dynamic movement but Ten Hag might think he can still develop Donny. Why bring Sabitzer in on a big wage when he isn't going to be a terribly important player if the other transfers work. Could very quickly be an expensive squad filler and we already have Donny on a lesser wage for that.

To be fair, his last season as Ajax was already poor. He was outstanding in that 18/19 team with some top players around him who carried that team (De Jong, De Ligt, Ziyech) but he was never the pivotal figure. In the 19/20 covid season where the Dutch league wasn't finished and Ajax was woeful at times, he was nothing special. I think most of the people who follow the Dutch league closely were already stunned by the transfer fee at the time. Can't fathom that we are already entering the fourth season with him on our payroll and he has shown jack shit. I wish him all the best, but I highly doubt if he can make it at United.

How many years is he with us now…2/3? Granted the injury earlier this season wasn’t helpful but I’d give the guy until January next to see what he can do in a different system, ETH has worked with him before, let’s see what he can do and if not then bye bye.

He started to look better before his injury. We might never know what his potential here is. Ten Hag gave it a go with him, I‘m not sure he will get another.

Good to see him doing well in his recovery process. I really hope he comes back strongly and prove everyone, including me, wrong.

"Incredible footage from Carrington". feck me talk about overhype.
Yeah the tweet text was a bit weird and over the top for sure. But at least they didn't go all Arsenal and make a full documentary about a player returning from an injury.

It's funny, I felt it was way over the top the way AFTV and the rest were hailing the messianic return of Jesus, despite the fact that they'd actually done just fine without him.

Yeah and it’s not like he was out for a year with an ACL or something.
