Wouldn't be comfortable with him against set pieces in England.

He is good with the ball at his feet, but have worries over him against high balls.

Yep I’ve not seen him enough to know how he is at coming for crosses and YT compilations always just shows saves and a bit of distribution, when in reality coming out for crosses or sweeping are equally as important.

In my view, his saves look good and distribution looks like a similar level to Ederson, which is an incredible tool but to cost £65m he needs to have the other parts of his game at a top level too.

Anyone know how he is at sweeping or coming for crosses?

My barber is Portuguese and a Porto fan and he was raving about him. Says he's brilliant with his feet.

Didn't mention anything about keeping the ball out of the goal, though..

My Colleague is a mad Porto fan and he says he is the best keeper around at the moment and rates him very highly

Any chance you can schedule in a haircut appointment soon so we can learn more about his shot stopping and commanding of his area?

Any particular reason you'd have that fear? His statistics show he's very strong against crosses so don't know why he'd be a weakness at set pieces. He will definitely not be worse than DDG.

Also I'd like to know the size of his cojones. How mentally strong is he?

He didn't have a great World Cup iirc, but seems to be having a strong season, which is a good indicator in my opinion.

He is actually an upgrade on DDG on every senes. Unlike Raya who is better with his feet but worst at shot stopping. Together with Iane we need him the most this summer.

Because he probably watched last World Cup that happened about 4 months ago.

De Gea is currently by all measurements a worse shot-stopper than Raya. Not sure why this myth is persisting. Yes De Gea makes spectacular saves on occasion but he also lets in silly goals all the time and is now a net negative shot-stopper in addition to being league bottom in every other aspect of keeping.

I dont know Costa bar the world cup so cant comment, so can only go on your second statement.

But wholeheartedly agree in general with pretty much all the yougn premiership keepers whose names keep coming up. And before people start throwing stats about....we are talkign about being between the sticks at Manchester United with all due respect to the clubs they are at, the pressure and expectation is so much higher, so even the ball at the feet, do they perform to the same levels they are for us?

People are quick to forget the likes of Mark Bosnich and Ben Foster who were both fantastic shot stoppers and keepers at Villa/Watford but just couldnt transform that form to the burden of playing for us.

Not saying DeGea is even a better shot stoper than these other names, but (and see some one already commented above), there shouldnt be any doubting DeGea is a very good shot stopper, he has been for a good decade here, so labellign it a myth because of stats is compeltely blinkered.

We either need to spend money on a top top keeper which Costa may or may not be, I dont know......or keep DeGea in my opinion.

We will if DeGea goes need two keepers, one may be a cheap loan as we have done but the likes of Raya and SAnchez....what if they struggle with the pressure and then we only have a loan keeper to fall back on?

Appreciate any keeper may struggle, but the premiership keepers look like good young (in keepers terms) players to me, but none have stood out as fantastic keepers as of yet.

I think its partly the obsession with modern keepers being good with there feet, obviously a weakness for DeGea and Henderson is no better either. Not hindering Nick Pope at Newcastle.

It is something needs improving on of course as it is a hinderance to us

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

There are two very different aspects that people tend to either roll into one or ignore one when talking about 'modern keepers'. The quality of the passing and distribution which is more of an offensive thing which helps maintain possession, and the ability and decision-making to act as a sweeper which is a more defensive aspect which closes the space and enables the defenders to maintain a higher line. All three keepers you named are poor at the former. Pope is very good at the latter, Henderson is fairly good at it, De Gea is obviously poor at it.

Obviously the ideal is to get a keeper who is great at both, but even just being good at one is an improvement. A keeper being downright bad at both is a bigger issue than a lot of people seem to realise.

So it seems like you'll be buying a new gk soon.

I'm a porto fan so I can tell you about Diogo.

He is great with his feet, great distribution.
Great penalty stopper.
Very good shot stopper,
He is a good cross stopper as well but maybe that's where he is least consistent, but still pretty good.
He is still prone to a mistake here and there, but he is young so he will improve. And no Gk is immune to the occasional mistake.
He has not cost Porto many points with mistakes that I remember, last one I remember was against Liverpool in the champions league 2021/2022.
He did not have a great wc, but that's not really representative of him. Probably felt the pressure a bit.

Of course he will have a lot more work in the premier league than at Porto, so we will see how he adapts if the transfer happens.

Should be an absolute priority.

Rarely there’s a keeper of his quality available he will be among Allison and Ederson in the coming years.

We can't afford him.
You could, in fact I don’t think he will cost more then 35M.

Porto are very poor and need the money. They are going to have to make a big sale this summer and Costa is the only guy with any market value on that squad.

Can he save really slow shots? Ones that just bobble along.

De Gea is finished here.

This is the type of moves United need to stay doing. Star rebuilding the spine of the team with young talent mixed with experience.
Agree. World class Striker isn’t the spine of the team. Keeper is definitely one of the spine of the team espcially with manager who wants to play from the back, it’s a critical position.

Yes please. I’ll take a keeper in the mould of Allison/Ederson who may provide heart attacks when he plays sweeper keeper but at least he can command his area and be pro-active in not only sensing attacking threats from opposition, but also set up attacks.

With every week that passes, GK is becoming more and more obviously a priority.

The worry is that we have so many other priorities that there’s no chance we get all needs in the next window.

Ya I believe United to have a short list of players where they won’t have to pay an exuberant amount of money all together. Especially if we some sales United should look at doing.

In Portugal alone:

- Diogo Costa should be available for fair market value.

- Sporting are not going to the CL so they will have to sell as well. Guys like Manuel Ugarte and Pedro Gonçalves should be available

- For Benfica Gonçalo Ramos should be a player United look to invest in to lead the line.

In the EPL:

- Palhinha has proved to be a guy who is ready for the next move.

- Mitoma as well to fill out an complete a competitive squad.

- Felix. I know it has not worked out at Chelsea but that because of the way that club has performed. He has showcased talent in the EPL and at United with a system and the way ETH wants to play I think it can pan out. His price as well should have dropped now to the 65M range.

If we sign Costa, Ugarte, and Ramos alone, I’m more than happy. How much is your estimation for the cost of these three?

- Diogo Costa 35-40M

- Gonçalo Ramos 100M at the very least (Do I believe He is worth that? No, but after the Darwin and Enzo sale i don’t believe Benfica will sell for anything less. Additionally I don’t think Benfica need to sell anyone this summer so I think they will be very hard to negotiate with)

- Manuel Ugarte 40M I think is enough to take him. Or 35M with some objectives. Sporting don’t have CL next season so they are going to have to even the books somehow

Out of the 3 I think Ramos is the most improbable of happening. Benfica have made 200M alone on the last 2 windows along with the CL money from this season and the money they will get from qualifying to next season CL they are looking at about 300M in revenue.

Ugarte and costa are very doable at a very good market value for two young players.

Nice. I knew the market of striker is just not suitable for us. Costa and Ugarte seem to be the realistic ones.

I don’t know if I would throw my eggs all in this basket but I wonder if a guy like Santiago Giménez is not worth a punt? Has played well at Feyenoord scoring 22 goals so far this season and is young enough to develop. United had success with Javier Hernandes. Additionally I don’t think Giménez would be all that expensive.

Doubt Porto will sell Diogo for 35m euros, Diaz was more than that and Porto were far more desperate at that time.
Supporters were furious about that sale.

Porto did good money in the champions league this year. If we secure 2nd place that’s more money coming guaranteed.
Plus Diogo has the potential to be one of the best keepers in the world.

Porto renewed his contract and upped his release fee to 75m € to then sell for 35? I don’t see it.

Porto still does need to sell but I think 45m euro at least.

45M is very possible but I would not rule out a 35M deal with objectives that equal up to 45M.

Diaz is an attacking player so of course he was going to go for more then a goal keeper. It’s different.

Even for a more recent example,

Fabio Vieira went to Arsenal for only 35M and Vitinha to PSG for 41M. Both outfield players who theoretically should be sold for more money then a keeper.

35M plus objectives would be my guess especially with Porto financial situation not being the best (hence why they don’t invest in the squad).

Ten Hag's comments on wanting to have De Gea renew his contract and then signing a back-up keeper is a bit worrying. How can you expect to build up from the back with De Gea as your goalkeeper?
