It is definitely close and he is without a doubt a top 5 left back in the world. Personal preference from there.

Shaw's passing from deep is the best around, and he has a good final ball too. His defending is excellent all around too.
He’s certainly got the talent to be a contender for best LB in the world, no doubt about that. He may be the most naturally gifted pure footballer in our squad.

But he’s let down by his fitness, his concentration lapses and his tendency to coast through matches, through seasons, through his career - which are all facets of the same psychological issues, imo. He would have benefited from Fergie-style man management

I think he and Rashford make an excellent pairing down the left hand side and when one is missing you see the other's performance start to be impacted.

He offers very little to our attack. Defensively he’s very good most the time though.
:houllier:

How is it possible to watch our matches and argue this? He would have had an assist if not for Antony's terrible header today. His crossing is sublime. And he's so composed on the ball he almost never loses it, which is also important for our attacks.

Yea. Perhaps “very little” is exaggerating it. He did get involved at times especially in this match but over the season, he should be contributing much more. I admit that I think that this applies to everyone else as well.

So he was the first one back to make a last ditch tackle after the corner he himself took when they countered. I really enjoyed that.

Yes, had the same exact thought when it happened.

Id have Robertson, Nuno Mendes and Davies over him.
Hes a massive part of our attack, but his attacking output compared to the top lbs is abysmal and our attack is also abysmal by they way.
Luke Shaw has 6 assists & 1 goal this season

Robertson - 11 assists & 0 goals
Alponso Davies - 8 assists & 3 goals
Nuno Mendes - 7 assists & 2 goals

So it’s hardly ‘abysmal’ in comparison with the other three you mentioned.

The other three are all assisting to better forwards tbh. Two of them play in much weaker leagues that their clubs dominate. And furthermore Shaw spent a third of the season playing CB.

Absolutely. He’s just an exceptional footballer.

I think you’ll find Shaw is playing Europa League and not UCL (only 2 PL assist and has never got more than 5)

Where as Robertson 5 is the lowest hes had in the past 6 years.

However I wasn’t even talking about stats but if you want to go and look at xA and xG

Shaw is a very good player and a very good defender. However his attacking output is lacking (taking on defenders, deliveries into the box, runs into the box when we’re attacking on the right etc)

Very good player though.

Good game and one of our most important players when he plays at this level.

I will say it till I'm blue in the face though but the way he somehow abandons or is gone missing from the left wing channel when the opponent has the ball there in the latter parts of games is slightly alarming. Granted he didn't get that much help.

Really good today, played Neto off the pitch, should have had an assist.

Best bit for me today was when he let Lindelof have it for a total brain fart of a moment. Traore is between the two and you’d expect Lindelof to come across but instead he goes to get back in to a CB position leaving Shaw who is expecting Lindelof to deal with it have to get back at Traore to stop him.

Was that or squaring up to Traore.

I think Shaw is brilliant (possibly player of the year). But I agree, he leaves a big gap when we're under pressure at the end of matches. Nerve-wracking to watch.

Yeah I was baffled that Lindelof essentially ran away and just left that for Shaw.

He also takes corners and freekicks. Shaw isn't even close to being a top class player he barely shows up 1/3 of the season.

It's Lindelof's default move, back away and let someone else deal with it, whilst he shuffles back into the penalty box away from any responsibility. He's been more proactive recently but a leopard never changes its spots

Just ask AWB. Whenever Lindelof was playing RCB under the Ole years, AWB would have to lock down his right side and also tuck into the box because he rarely got any secondary help from the Swede.

He’s our best player if we’re being honest.
No argument from me. When he’s on it he’s exceptional.

He might be the best, but he’s not the most important. Going on our mid season form, he is sixth most important after Casemiro, Eriksen, Bruno, Rashford and Martinez, imo. But I do still think Shaw is the best footballer we have.

Great player and contributes offensively in many ways, but agree he is lacking what you call attacking output.

(however I think he has 3 PL assists: Chelsea and Bournemouth as LB and Leeds as CB. Actually the only CB assist we have this season, all completions included. However Shaw still has quite low numbers considering all free kicks and corners he takes)

Toss up for me between Shaw and Martinez as our POTY. I have Martinez ahead by a nose but there's still time yet. Shaw very rarely has a stinker and when he does we're in trouble.

Interested to see if Eth uses him as a lb or cb again v city in the cup final given the success at old Trafford. Especially if we got varane

Quietly brilliant again. But at the risk of asking too much of Luke, I’d like to see more in attack from him.

With the way Lindelof has been playing I don't see it happening as long as Varane is fit
