Assist number seems bad when considering his number of goals. But I think it really an overstated concern. Since the first time I watched his video clips when we bought him, it’s obvious to see he always plays in a way with a look to find the teammates. It’s from his play in Atlanta youth team and in Rangers and now in Sunderland. His assist won’t be a problem if he establishes in the team. ETH will develop his game further. Let’s just take it step by step.

He has enormous potential. So tidy on the ball. Great balance. Perfect weight of pass. It looks easy for him

0.45 goals per 90 and 0.10 assist per 90. Non pen xG per 90 is 0.20 and xAG is 0.15. basically suggests his goal stats this season have been a bit flukey but generally his qualities and contributions lie elsewhere. Progressing the ball up the pitch through passes and carries (94th and 85th percentile in the championship), getting it into the final third, getting it into the box, etc.

Theres a chance he struggles in a similar way to Sancho (Sancho had even better numbers than that but in the Bundesliga for a few years), but i think that's more mental issues than anything. Amad isn't explosive, but just a very smart player and very good close control and technical abilities.

Also nicely sums up the limitations of xG. His goals have been anything but flukey. They’ve generally been superb long range shots.

He's a great prospect, but he has less assists than Antony this season, playing in the Championship. And I'll bet the people who are screaming for him to come back and replace Antony will be the first ones to give him endless shit if he doesn't hit the ground running.
Yeah, but he doesn’t have that role. He builds up their attack and he rarely goes for the killer ball. He is the one who gets open, gets the pass, draws attention with the ball, and then puts it perfectly to one of his teammates taking a run who in his turn perhaps can get the assist.

Sunderland was promoted for this season to the Championship. I think they have done a great job building a squad, but their budget and overall quality is very far from the just demoted PL teams getting parachute payments. It’s far from a given that they are a team who will take their game to the opponent. If you look at their CBs and CMs — I doubt anyone of them ever will be any kind of PL mainstays, great characters and smart players, but my point is just that Sunderland is definitely not built on a strong core. Like 75% of the time, Diallo is heavily involved in getting them up pitch.

Since Simms was recalled and Stewert got hurt (they lost their two target strikers within like a couple of weeks) — it’s just not a team that scores many goals at all on ‘perfect deliveries’.

I think this also is reflected in the amount of goals he scored on the second wave. He has been behind building up the attack, and when he gets into the box the rebound is there.

Long story short, I think the key players of our team will — love — playing with Amad.

Watching the game now, not sure if Sunderland are really small or if Luton are the biggest side in English football
Yes and yes. ;)

My comment on his assists was flippant. I think he's a superb prospect, and incredibly talented, but anyone thinking he's gonna come back and immediately make that RW his own next season based on his performances in the Championship is deluded.

I think we'll loan him out for another season. But if Ten Hag thinks he's ready, and brings him back for next season, and he does oust Antony, then fair enough.

Well, he doesn’t need to displace anyone. They can all be in the team. We have so many games to play and we need a quality squad.

Bloody hell he's having a season.

Antony is going to have real, real competition on his hands.

But either way, wherever he plays, as long as he does the defensive work and pressing the manager expects, he will get games.

Sunderland’s Ekwah seems a very good prospect. Have we sent anyone to scout him?
He’s been very good the few times I’ve seen him during the last few weeks. Strong as an ox, hard to get the ball off of. But also good close control and more often than not makes the right decision in possession. Looks like a talent.

There’s not a player in the Championship that our scouts would not know. Our scouts attend a lot of matches in that league. Not sure what you mean by sending anyone to scout him.

Well, that only stands if you think a collection of long range shots is flukey or consistently sustainable. Don't think anybody has ever managed to keep up a high rate of long distance scoring year on year. By flukey I don't mean he didn't deserve them, but more that it'll regress which it's almost certain to do. You hope he can improve his metrics and get in better chances to get more goals (or continue his rate).

First I've heard of him. Do you know anything about him? Where he plays, etc?
Not really. It’s just because I watched Amad’s Sunderland game highlights and started notice him. Then, I went to wiki to figure out who he is. He is only 21 and physical. His technical ability seems really good. He plays in 6 and able to do box to box. Great ball carrying forward and has developed good chemistry with Amad, Roberson, and etc. Wiki says he played less than 20 games for Sunderland in this first season. I guess he has taken that position his own in the second half of the season ?

I’ve got no idea as I definitely don’t know enough about him. Need more than a few matches in the Championship to make some kind of judgement.
Yeah, I have no idea about that either. But he really catches my eyes every time watching amad’s highlights.

Antony’s hardly ever injured and we don’t rotate. I’d rather he stayed where he is and developed than got Pellistri’s minutes.
Amad is a lot better than Pellistri. Fernandes has also played on the right quite a few times this season. There's definitely space for Amad in the squad, it just depends how much desire there is to integrate him into it.

Agree with this, in a fair competition I think Amad has more about him than Sancho and Antony. Sancho is rather pointless when we have Rashford as the starter and he is so ineffectual on the right. If there is a buyer, even for 30m I'd sell him and use the money to fund the rejuvination of the team's spine.
I think he'll have a very hard time beating out Antony, but it would be nice to have a backup RW and that's the right sized role for a 20 year old anyways if he isn't a prodigy.

I think so too. Antony is a full international for feckin Brazil. Had played a couple of seasons at the Dutch League and now a full season at the PL. Amad's just now completing a full season at the Championship.
He will need more game experience and education before he can make the next leap to challenge Antony -- and thats assuming that Antony doesn't improve next season!!

So without pulling out my calculator, how many goals and assists does he have?

14 after today. My point was that we shouldn't expect him to be a regular goalscorer just because he scored a fair few screamers this season, as nobody keeps up this xG overperformance, so we should expect regression and to focus on the actual qualities that make him a big talent (if we rated him on his goalscoring, we'd get let down very quickly as this isn't sustainable).

His accuracy in his long shots is so perfect, can’t believe he keeps doing it every week. Also makes me question whether he wouldn’t be able to do it in the PL, if he has time to get a shot off, no keeper is saving them.

As much as I'm getting super excited to see him play under Ten Hag I wouldn't be averse to him remaining on loan at Sunderland if they get promoted. It would give him a chance to have a full season of Premier League football in a team he is familiar with and a manager who trusts him.

That being said I really hope we extend his contract as from what I've read it runs to 2025. I wouldn't be too keen on him going on loan again and coming back with just a year left.

Of course it’s sustainable. Some players are able to score regularly from long range. Frank Lampard racked up 20 goals/season doing exactly that. In an era where we were blessedly free of expected anything analysis.

Wasn't always the case. I always thought he lacked power in his shot but clearly, Mowbray has had him working on it.
I remember like back in Nov/Dec 2022 when Mowbray stated publically that he wanted more goals from Amad -- rather than just being a RW or playmaker. He must have been at the gym a lot more after that.

So good to watch. Technically amazing. Would love to see him be given minutes on the right wing and 10 position next season. That said, it'd be nice for Sunderland to go up, thus allowing him to spend a season on loan in the EPL.

Eh, I'm sure you'd find that he didn't overperform his xG too much if they had those stats. Some is fine, having almost 3 times as much just won't be sustained, it never is by anybody. Lampard made great runs and got himself in great positions, scored plenty from inside the box and had a balance of goals.

Even Bale who basically spammed long range shots like crazy and was amazing with them, quick check at his totals between 14/15 and 21/22 when he left Madrid has 77 goals from 65.44 xG, with 5 seasons of shooting slightly below xG and only 2 of significantly higher. So a 17% overperformance for one of the best modern day long range shooters... Amad is at like 63%. Greenwood in his first season scored basically every shot, 10 goals from just over 3 xG... And then the next 2 seasons was right on xG until the thing. Regressing down to xG level is one of the easiest and consistently accurate things you can count on in football when looking at a player who scored a lot of long range goals and asking if their total can be sustained. They either improve their xG and score easier goals, or it'll plummet.

Some people are confusing your stats as a criticism of Amad and/or that he can't be productive in other ways. It's simply really, he won't keep scoring long rangers and unless he has some Bale-like transformation, we shouldn't be expecting that sort of goal threat from him, if he joins us back next year. However, what's clear is that he has talent and ability that can translate to other areas like his take-ons, ball carrying, pass and moves etc, which can open up the game for us differently compared to the way Sancho currently isn't. He may not be competing for the LW spot but even as a RW squad option, he may be able to bring those assets, which is something to look forward too.

Yeah I'm basically saying the way he's scored his goals this season isnt a repeatable thing and that focusing on his goal stats and thinking he can be decent scorer at United is probably the wrong way to look at him. It's nice and all, but no player has ever kept up a high scoring rate built from long range shots. They have a handful and then pad it with normal chances (and also get in a fair few other chances somewhere they average out their scoring rate). So like... It's nice to see amad score a few bangers for his confidence. But I think it means virtually nothing for his development for the club and what we can expect going forward. His main qualities come from his build up play and he can provide some solid goal stats on top. Plenty of data that shows his value in those areas and are more relevant to how good he can become rather than a long range purple patch.

It says something about his shooting technique and finishing. A lot of his goals are individual efforts. I've watched a lot of Sunderland this season and I see him get in decent positions a lot with his teammates ignoring him. It's not usually out of selfishness, they simply don't have the technique or quality to find him. That shouldn't be a problem at United where he should get easier chances to score. I think he can become a very good goalscorer at the highest level with time.

He doesn’t look like a potent goal scoring forward to me. He looks like a no10. Wherever he ends up, I don’t see why he can’t keep scoring goals from distance. He’s doing it now because he is good at it. He’s not going to turn into a poacher I don’t think.

I like the look of him but I can’t see him getting into our team.

Not sure if I want more Sunderland or Middlesborough in the Prem. Amad would have another great year of development now in the PL under SunderlanD. Not sure if Carrick would take him if he got promoted or any of our players in the future.

I agree that looking at assists alone is a bad metric, but what metrics are you using to say with complete and utter confidence that he's a better player than Antony already?
Long post incoming so bare with me, but outside of watching both extensively with my own eyes, here's what the numbers say.

Antony

His xG is high mainly because he shoots a ton, as he's in the 95th percentile of all AM's/wingers for shots attempted per 90. But goalscoring/shoddy finishing isn't my main issue with Antony, as many young wingers are very hit or miss in front of goal (even though he shoots too often).

Amad

Amad has been more productive this year so it's no surprise he looks a bit better on the surface with these numbers. The nice part is that he's already outperforming his xG, which is impressive for a young player with as many goals as he has this year let alone someone that isn't even a striker. But I don't expect either player to be (hopefully) relied upon as a main source of goals next year for us, so let's dig deeper and see what really sets the two apart.

Antony

Those passing stats are shocking, especially from a player that isn't very creative either. At the very least you'd want to seem him circulating the ball more to our main creators, but this shows that he's a bit of a black hole which matches up what we see in game.

Amad Diallo

Well that's a big difference. Amad not only shows a more willing tendency to pass and combine with others (as well as being more successful at it via %), but he's notably far more progressive in his passes than Antony. He more than doubles him in passes into the final third and general progressive passes are over 1 full pass more per 90. Neither player is uber creative in fashioning actual scoring chances, but Amad shows far more ability to find other players with forward passes while keeping the tempo high. This is vital, as we need more technical ability in our team and the ability to accurately pass forward, while seemingly a simple skill, is often lacking within our side. You don't need every player in the side to be a Bruno-like wizard at creating and assisting, but you certainly need all of them to have the confidence to play passes in tight spaces to find gaps against the more well drilled or higher pressing sides.

Antony

Amad Diallo

Finally we get to dribbling/possession stats on ball. Antony is actually very tough to dispossess, which matches what we all see each match day. For all his faults, he does manage to wriggle out of difficult situations while keeping the ball and does so clearly better than Amad at this time. However, you can also see that Amad gets on the ball far more in general, especially in the middle third of the pitch, and while he isn't Garnacho running at his man he's more willing and successful in taking on his man than Antony currently.

So to sum up: All of this reinforces the fact that while Amad is young and inexperienced, and obviously playing in an easier league, he's undoubtably more comfortable/talented both in front of goal and in the build up of attacking play. Which shows when you watch both, as Amad seems to just have more to his game while Antony is a one dimensional "shoot first" type winger that isn't efficient with his shots at all. In reality his best qualities for us currently are that he works very hard in tracking back and doesn't lose possession needlessly. While I appreciate those things, that doesn't scream "huge prospect that we need to keep as an automatic starter and give endless chances to". I'd feel differently about Antony if he had the take-on ability of Garnacho or some uber-young raw winger, as at least then you'd see a path for him to one day put it together with improved decision making/end product, but he doesn't. If he can't improve his overall play aside from shooting he's not going to make it here, or worse: we'll persist far too long while shunting a promising prospect to the side just because ETH/the club feels the need to "give him more time" because he cost 80m. And I don't think this is a one off, as many raised similar concerns about Antony even while he was at Ajax. He was never a Memphis type that just tonked a weak league, and his underlying metrics have always been quite average compared to the hype he had even before we signed him.

I’ll save everyone the time of reading the pointless direct comparison.

Next compare Antony at Ajax and Diallo at Rangers for further pointless comparisons.
