Crap. I was hoping Brighton would do us a solid tonight, especially after flattening Arsenal.

Sad that we are after a favour from Villa. Probably just going to have to do this ourselves.
We don’t need a favour ? It’s in our own hands ? 3 games 2 wins . Chill out

One game at a time. I’m taking nothing for granted as our performances have been terribly inconsistent in recent months and within 90 minutes as you don’t know what you’re getting from one half to the next. I’m hoping the weeks rest will benefit us, although even though we had it against Wolves as well and got the win in the end we still turned to shit in the 2nd half and were clinging on for a while there. Results are the most important thing though so I’ll take a win in whatever fashion possible at this stage.

We’ve left it too late to pick up form annoyingly, maybe 1 or two games late in this winning streak I reckon. The Bournemouth game was a killer we should have won on the back of the United win and the Chelsea game they were first managerless we should have taken advantage of. Both games we should have come away with 6 points, 4 at the minimum. We’d be a good position now had we with just the 3 but came away with 1 point.

Newcastle we’re realistically the ones we were chasing with the games they had, but they‘re locked in for top 4 now, even if they draw their last two and we win ours, thanks to Brighton they’ve fecked the GD on us giving away those daft late goals.

Can’t see United not winning any of 2 of the 3 left needed.

Don’t like the Geordies, always been an odious club, but after the way Brighton celebrated beating us I’m happy to see them fail. We just have to get our finger out and beat 2 of these last 3.

Either way it’s going to be hilarious/crushing for us and the scouse fans depending who qualifies. They’ve been given hope over the last few weeks, so if they fail it will be soul destroying. On the other side we’ve been preparing ourselves for failure since the second Sevilla game.

My gut feeling a week or two ago was that United only make top 4 if Newcastle fall off. Seems like Newcastle are already here as a top 4 club and I'd back Liverpool over us.

Thankfully your gut feeling has no effect on reality.

We still control our own fate. The goal difference column is telling though. Has me feeling like the only way we qualify top 4 is if Newcastle stop overachieving themselves because I would back Liverpool to finish ahead of us.
It's certainly not telling me what I want to hear.

After the terrible season Liverpool have had, I can't believe it's so close between us.
If Liverpool have had a terrible season and are close to us, then Utd have had a terrible season too. If Utd had a great season then we would be way ahead of a team that have had a terrible season.

It’s quite simple. Not sure why fans can’t work this out.

that makes zero sense

expectations going into the season were completely different (title contenders vs top 4 hopefuls)

It's not THAT simple though. I'd say Brighton have had a better season than Liverpool despite probably finishing behind them. Relative to expectations, they have performed better.

Liverpool finished 34 points ahead of United last season so they went backwards massively. We've improved 10+ points on last season.

Context is key. Liverpool's season was awful due to the fall off from last year. Remember, Pool was challenging for a quadruple, while we were slugging it out for a Europa League place. We have improved from last year and therefore we can call our season 'good' (if we get top 4).

I was replying to a fan who was saying they can’t believe Liverpool have had a terrible season, and yet they are still close to us.

My point was, our season (league) is about the same as theirs. We have one more win than them, lost the same number of games and they have a much better goal difference. And they smashed us 7-0.

So if you class their season as terrible, then ours isn’t great either.

Context is a wonderful thing.

United are coming off a 6th place and 58 points.

Liverpool are coming off a 2nd place finish, 92 points and two trophies.

United have more points and a trophy than last season. Hence it's a better season.

Forest are 16th and looking like they’ll survive relegation. They’ve had a better season than Liverpool.

Absolutely beautiful. Raised Liverpools hopes only to crush them again. It’s the hope that kills them.

Too close for comfort in the end. We seriously need better attackers and midfielders. The decision making at times is baffling in the final third.

One thing is for certain, if ETH is to make a go of the Champions League and advance to the latter stages, too many in the squad just aren’t good enough footballers.

At most we need to win 1 from our last 2 home games. Chill the feck out.
