How close are Newcastle to a title challenge?

No where near unless they make 3-4 quality additions they won't get near top 4 either , might struggle even with with those additions .

5 years at least. They have set up the team in the wrong way to take the game to their opponents. They're good at grinding results but that wont be enough to match City, they need to be able to take the game to their opponents. Isak might be good enough but the rest need upgrading if they're to transform the team. The problem they face is catching up to a City that can spend just as much as them, but are 15 years ahead in the process.

I know they're talking about building sustainably, FFP blah blah blah but i can't see a summer without a couple of dodgy sponsorships and a massive transfer spend.

Nah, this is unlikely. They have already been quite good at times this year, they will without a doubt make those 3-4 quality additions if not more, they could still finish third with one game to go despite getting only 8 points in their first 7 games, and most other top-4 contenders (probably all of them except City) have as much homework to do in the transfer window as Newcastle, if not more. We may not like it one bit, but they are here to stay unfortunately.

Fair enough I don't believe they have much quality in their current squad barring few , it's actually quite similar to United in a sense that stand still or get summer recruitment wrong we both are back to square one .

Though agree with the point that only City are set up nicely for next season , everybody else have lots of work to do .

I'm predicting Newcastle to be the club to control this summer's transfer window.

They will have the advantage in terms of monetary and CL qualification, so all the players we think we can get, will be in their radar too.

God help us all, let us have Qatar money, because if we don't, then forget about the best players available because Newcastle will get them first.

Market is not controlled by clubs with big money, it's usually won by clubs who pick right players and act quickly.

I don't remember City going head to head battles with other clubs for signings, they even lost players to other clubs. They usually pick players who suit their system and signs them.

Clubs with narrow view on the market will always end up thinking there aren't players available for good price who will improve the team.

They are close, but not title contenders just yet.
What will hit them next year will be a more congested fixture list being in the CL for the first time in 20yrs. It's a different beast playing every week in the Prem, to then travelling abroad midweek to face top European teams.
Fatigue will set in and they don't have the squad to compete on all fronts.
Top 4 is reasonable though with a few signings.
