Phil Foden - [insert title update here as he is past the "has he got potential?" point now]

Haha I’m sure Foden would much prefer to just ignore a few United fans singing about his mum, but he’s got his manager and the BBC discussing it! making it far bigger than it ever needed to be.

Chin up Phil.

I just find it weird people even know enough about a footballer's family to sing a song about it. Where are people getting this information? Absolute saddos.

Ignoring the fact this thread has probably been bumped for the chants - I really do feel like he's in this weird situation that others have mentioned where he's given a pass like he's a young, developing player.

He's weeks away from being 25, in his 8th season in the an elite first team that's won 6 PL titles and a CL, he has nearly 50 England caps and been part of 3 major tournaments.

He should a leader in these teams but the fact he everyone treats him like a kid speaks volumes. Weak mentality and a system player if ever I've seen one.
Was he not poty last season? Can a player not have an off season?

I'm starting to wonder how many of those against the chant have actually been to a football match? If this offends you, maybe you're better off staying at home where it is safe.

His mums been plastered all over social media on a few occasions being an absolute embarrassment. I suspect that’s why a lot of people would’ve known about her.

Absolutely ridiculous comment and indicative of the absolute state of the internet in 2025

Look, just because people disagree or don't like something it doesn't mean they are offended by it.

And no, I'm not offended by your post before you get all excited and start calling me woke or a snowflake.

Oh. Haven't seen any of it. Still pretty sad though.

Your upset about football fans doing what football fans have always done. We don't need mardarses who have no connection to terrace culture coming in and trying to sanitise it.

I'd completely forgotten about the chant until Pep brought it up and will now be researching to see it Phil Foden's mum is indeed a slag

It’s always a concern when taking my family to a match, in case of being seated near moronic arseholes who are more interested in screaming abuse than actually watching the game.

So dumb, grown men acting like they're still at school.

I don't know, this one is so ridiculously absurd it's funny. Calling someone's mum a slag just feels cheap, we can do better.

Jesus Chill guys, it’s funny. It’s a joke. Many are quick to judge us fans for being moody and having a hostile environment.
Loads were laughing round me when it was being sung. I’m sure Phil will live.

You have to worry about the same thing getting in public transport, especially in big cities. Such is life.

Their personal experience?

This is a classic manager move - to deflect. City were absolutely woeful yesterday. Not finding anything, but at every football match worse things than this are sung or shouted at a player.

Pep was asked a question about it in the post match press conference. What's he gonna say, "it's fine"? You make it sound like he issued a press release or brought it up himself.

I think this has been blown way out of proportion by the media and Pep

I was there and the chant was sang by a few groups of fans on a couple of occasions it’s not like it was shouted at him all game.

Maybe he should address the more prominent chant of you cheating bastards you know what you are.

What's the joke? That someone's mum has a lot of sex? That was funny when I was 13.

There's gotta be a line somewhere with chants no? We rightly look down on disaster chants, homophobic chants, racist chants etc, why not sexist chants too?

It's because it's about a woman, if the song was about his Dad it wouldn't be news.

Im sure Phil is chuffed he deflected by pointing out songs being sung about his mum.

City fans were singing about Jamie Vardy's missus promiscuity for 90 minutes in midweek. Pep was suspended and in the stands, he was probably taking part in it

Seriously though I get it isn't the 90's or even 2000's anymore, but you will never eliminate chants like this completely and nor should it be. I will let others decide where they draw the line.

Pep helping to put weight to it is incredibly silly from someone that has been around football for 40 years though

This is rare and not a concern in English grounds really. I never see/hear it. Singing edgy songs? Sure.
Abusing someone due to race/sexuality etc isn’t common at all.

It also starts feeling less like a joke when you know it comes from an incident a few years ago where some men called her a slag, she pushed one of them and he punched her in the face.

It’s funny to most. Hence why people were laughing. Okay you don’t find it funny, but if others do who’s right and who’s wrong?

We can’t police every chant. Have you ever been to a game? This Is the culture of football in the terraces.
Racism and homophobia is not comparable to calling Foden’s mum a slag ffs.

I hope Pep realises hes just gone and made Foden the target for every away day for City for the rest of the season. His mum will be getting a rough touch all over the country now

Why not? It's misogynistic chanting.

Cantona demonstrated very well on how to deal with a fan abusing his mother.

We can influence what gets sung in many ways, like we do with other chants we find unsavoury. That's part of how you can help change a culture. The culture used to be homophobic and racist chants are fine, and now they're not. This chant is just sexism at the end of the day. I wouldn't say it's any better than the homophobic "rent boy" chant. Many people find that funny too, but it's now seen as unacceptable. It's pretty comparable.

Phil Foden should've left City last summer while his stock was at an alltime high and joined someone like Barca, Real, or Bayern

Some won't be happy until the only chants you hear are "Let's go Man Utd, let's go!" and "de-fence!"
Or maybe people think it's possible to be funny without being homophobic, racist or sexist?

I’m interested to see how he plays when Guardiola leaves. He seems to have been moulded to fit that Guardiola style and I’m not sure how he’d fare in a system away from that. His England record is pretty poor in comparison to what he does for City.

I think we can all agree chanting is toxic masculinity that has no place in 2025.

Personally, I drew the line at "who ate all the pies" being sung at Jan Molby back in the day. Not only very insensitive, but also hypocritical as it was usually being sung by a troglodyte gaggle of fatties, who only paused from stuffing their own faces with pie to do the chant.
