I know it's The Sun but did this really happen??

Ronaldo really enjoyed that one. He was abused during the game by Chelsea fans who sickeningly chanted “You should have died in the tunnel” — a reference to him writing off his £200,000 Ferrari on the way to training last week.

It was not racist or homophobic, which are the types of chants the FA are trying to stamp out, but it was certainly distasteful.

The Portuguese genius is expected to be crowned World Player of the Year today and he was robbed of a goal which would have capped an excellent performance.

just because certain types of chants happens in every ground at some time or another doesn't make it OK, I'm sure we hear the Munich chants or see the paper planes every now and then as well, doesn't mean it's funny though.

if the renties had a bit of imagination and wit they could've made it funny by chanting something like "the wall wasn't 10 yards away" or something, not wishing death on the player.

Really bad apology. People actually died in Munich.

you don't get the point do you? You seem to think it's funny to wish death on players but unfunny when the gestures or chants are about death. songs ridiculing tragic deaths aren't too different from those wishing death on the players. I guess had the Munich disaster not happened but the opposition fans were wishing death on the Babe's (a la the Ronaldo incident here), you would've found that funny then, eh? :houllier:

I feel I should point out that on the tram back I heard for the first time a verse to a chant that makes fun of the death of Lampard's mum. All clubs have idiot fans.

A football chant isn't real life FFS.
so if the babes had survived the crash and a bunch of oppositions fans were chanting "you should've died on the runway", you'd have been pissing your pants as well eh? Good to know. Just trying to follow your logic, like.

reddevilcanada - and I will tell you something else seeing as you are too young and so far away from OT.......back in the days of terraces that sort of chant was very common place. If opposing fans had done that twenty years ago the player concerned would have laughed and clapped them.

Poor taste, no doubt luckily he wasnt harmed, that's why you wear your seat belt. The Beletti tackle was more dangerous for him.

mjs needs to calm down as well

the point isn't whether stupidity and ignorance is common place or not because it is, you find idiots in every set of fans. the point is whether it's OK to wish death on players, No doubt there would've been fans singing 'you should've died on the runway' to the Babes if they'd survived the crash as well, some idiots would've found it funny, but I doubt most sensible people would've done so as well. 20 years ago, hooliganism and racism was common place as well, it still is to a lesser extent, but you don't have to be near OT to make a distinction as to whether something is OK or not just because it's common place. That's the point.

So something along the lines of,

Viva Ronaldo
Viva Ronaldo
Hits walls from ten yards
or when driving cars
Viva Ronaldo

would have been better?

I'm not even that old, but I know the feeling, the shit you could get away with back then and 0% responsibility. Good times. Well at least I can do cool things like drink and drive and go to strip clubs now

Sorry all separate events, not drunk while driving. I was just saying as you get older you can do things like drive a car(when sober), drink(while not driving a car or drving a car n the near future), and going to the strip club(whilst drunk or sober, or of course going sober and getting drunk at the strip club)

There's some sensitive folk eh?

It's a football match, not a Sunday choir service..

If it's close to the bone, then so be it.
Exactly.

Sure things like Munich and Hillsborough are out of bounds, and quite right BUT Ronny didn't get hurt. No harm no foul, just a little humor in bad taste.
