Thought it might make sense to have a thread for all the various squad announcements, match reports and other news involving our youngsters this season (can obviously be ignored if people think individual threads for all that is the way to go).

England U20 squad named today for a friendly vs Montenegro next Tuesday (11/8/09):

Eastick announces U20 squad

Brian Eastick has announced his squad for England’s U20 fixture against Montenegro next week – the final preparation match before the FIFA U20 World Cup in Egypt next month.

The 18-man squad to face Montenegro at The Hawthorns includes several up and coming stars, some of whom are already making their mark in the English top-flight.

Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck from Manchester United join Aston Villa duo Ciaran Clark and Marc Albrighton, who have been called upon by Manager Eastick and Coach Noel Blake with one eye on the World Cup in September.

Goalkeepers
Declan Rudd (Norwich City) Jason Steele (Middlesbrough)

Defenders

Kyle Walker (Sheffield Utd (on loan from Tottenham Hotspur)), Joe Bennett (Middlesbrough), Sam Hutchinson (Chelsea), Martin Kelly (Liverpool), Ciaran Clark (Aston Villa), Ben Mee (Manchester City)

Midfielders

Jordan Henderson (Sunderland), Ross Jenkins (Watford), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Marc Albrighton (Aston Villa), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Jack Cork (Chelsea), Adam Clayton (Manchester City)

Forwards

Sam Baldock (MK Dons), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Hal Robson-Kanu (Reading)

I don't think we should allow Welbeck to play in the U20 World Cup. He seemed to be struggling with a few knocks in the U19's Euros.

You mean we should deny our players to participate in World Cups ? It would be easy to persuade youngsters to join us if we did..."oh btw - if you sign you won't play for your country again"

The U19 Euros (like the U17s) are held every summer. Does seem a bit odd that the Euro U21s and the U20 World Cup are held in the same year, but tbf you're generally looking at pretty different squads involved in those tournaments (due to 22/23 year-olds often playing for the u21s at the Euros), so it's only in the case of someone quite special like Welbeck that this sort of problem arises.

I'd guess there are possible clashes with other regional underage tournaments if you move the World Cup anyway so nothing that can be done really.

Difference is that this tournament isn't like the Euro U21's and U19's. The clubs of the players do not have to release their players, in the other championships they do not have any say what so ever.

I think it is wrong to deny a player, the chance to compete in a World Cup. But that being said he was struggling with a knee injury which forced him to withdraw from the U21's. He was still having niggles with this injury during the U19's and said as much, then he done his shoulder in.

It is a case of Danny's welfare, for me and pushing him too much. Will hurt him in the long run.

To be fair, unless he was to be involved in the first team, the experience from these tournaments will be very good for him. England seem to be aware of his physical issues - the coach of the U19s specifically said that he was being used more sparingly in consultation with United (generally he was only playing 75 mins per game). I'm sure if SAF was worried about how he was being treated, he would be pulled from the squad.

And like I said, the U20 World Cup doesn't start until September 20ish, plenty of time to assess him and get him right.

lysglimt's point still stands too - it might not be compulsory for clubs to release players for the U20 WC but most do/will, and not doing so isn't going to look great in the eyes of other potential young signings.

So there is every chance that we can lose both Welbeck & Macheda for this tournament? How long does this thing last? Any info? Fifa.com probably?

Edit: All info can be found here: http://www.fifa.com/u20worldcup/matches/index.html

Its from the 24th of September to the 10th of October but the group stages end on the 3rd of October..

We have many players eligible as we have Under 20 player from England, Germany, Italy & Brazil..

Macheda picked up his first U21 cap today vs Russia. He started and set up the first goal for Paloschi, but Italy eventually lost 3-2.

Johnstone, Thorpe, Morrison and Will Keane will all take part in The FA International U17 Tournament which gets underway on 26 August. England will face Portugal, Italy and Turkey in the annual four-team tournament which is being staged at Meadow Lane.

Republic of Ireland Under-19 manager Sean McCaffrey today (August 23rd) announced his squad for the upcoming Four Nations tournament, which will be held in Dublin and Bray on September 5th, 6th and 8th.

Amongst the players included in the impressive squad are Aaron Doran (Blackburn Rovers), Robbie Brady (Manchester United), Conor Clifford (Chelsea) and Conor Henderson (Arsenal).

Republic of Ireland Under-17 manager Sean McCaffrey has today announced a squad of 18 players for the Syrenka International Cup in Łódź, Poland from 30 August - 5 September 2009.

The squad, his first selected by McCaffrey since taking charge of this group, features 12 players to have won caps under Vincent Butler at Under-16 level last season. They include goalkeeper Sean McDermott, who completed his move from to Arsenal from IK Vaag in the summer, and defender Sean McGinty, a close-season signing of Manchester United from Charlton Athletic.

Think that's a first U19 callup for Brady, well deserved.

Walter Crickmer started it all...
Kiko Macheda in the Italy U21 squad for next Wednesday's friendly vs Russia in St Petersburg - A San Pietroburgo inizia il nuovo biennio: le novità di Casiraghi
I can't remember....but one of the regulars on here has a link to an Italian website that gives all the games that International players play. It is not the official site?????

So I got details of Macheda and Petrucci's U/16 and U/17 appearances.

I have lost the link!!!!

Anyone help?

Anyone have any good sites to identify how many caps our lads have won at each level?

The Irish site is terrible!
Both the NI and FAI sites are awful aren't they (the SFA/FAW sites aren't a great deal better)? I don't know of anything better for the Republic players unfortunately.

The FIGC site's the only one I've seen for the Italy players.

Macheda and Cathcart in their respective U21 squads named today (no Evans and Norwood for NI, surprisingly).

Video highlights and match reports from all of England's matches in The FA International U17 Tournament are now available at thefa.com. Seems like our lads did alright.

Interesting - didn't seem to feature for them at all last season after being #1 for the U19s the season before.

Who are the other player we can expect to be called up for this U-20? iirc only other Countries (from which we have players) to have qualified are: England, Italy & Brazil.

Brandy, Cleverley, Welbeck and Amos would all likely come into consideration for England (maybe Drinkwater and James at a push). The twins won't be called up by Brazil. Macheda's a possibility for Italy. Clubs don't have to release players though, so I would have thought at most only one of Welbeck/Macheda would go, maybe neither.

Macheda would be a certainty for Italy surely, given that he's on the up and has played for the U-21s? Assuming we let him go, of course.

I too have a feeling they may be called up for the U-20 WC coming up next month.. Luckily the club can ensure they do not take part.. However I wouldn't be against letting them go.. Looking at it the tournament is from the 24th of September to the 10th of October but the group stages end on the 3rd of October..

Looking at our fixtures during that period we have 4 fixtures.. We can surely cope without them + Macheda & Welbeck if they are all called up..

23 Wolves Home CC
26 Stoke Away PL
30 Wolfsburg Home CL
3 Sunderland Home PL

After this our next fixture is on the 17th Bolton Away PL

I would like to see the likes of Fabio, Welbeck & Macheda called up.. What say?

If both Welbeck and Macheda go, one injury to one of the three first-team strikers will leave us extremely short. Just don't see SAF letting them both go, and with justification.

Brazil have already named their squad iirc and it's all domestic-based players.

I think we can cope! We have Rooney, Berbatov & Owen.. In addition we can play with either Anderson or Giggs off one striker.. if we get into such a position where 2 of our strikers get injured!

The junior Brazil coaches are so weird! Even last year they picked all local lads for a tournament they had.. The one in which Costa played well..

It's not really a case of coping though, it's a case of having the options SAF would like around. Think everyone would agree Anderson or Giggs off a lone striker is far from ideal even for those fixtures, I'd imagine SAF thinks similar.

In an ideal world both would be allowed to go but club comes first.

I think it is worth the risk.. The good that can come of these tournaments will obviously not show any evident benefits in the short term but in the long term it can only be good..

Robbie Brady set up Ireland U19's goal in their 1-1 draw with Holland and seems to have had a good game according to the FAI's match report. Sean McGinty captained the U17's in three games over the past week - two 2-1 defeats (to Russia and Sweden) and a 4-1 win over Romania.

When I saw England u19's a few months back, he looked a step above. Nice to see him as the captain and sure he has a good future ahead of him.
