(*) Assists are counted differently, depending on the definition. In this particular instance, I have included the players who gave the ball to the goalscorer, as long as it was a genuine pass or cross, etc. UEFA appear to be using a slightly different definition. I haven't been able to see all games, so for those that weren't on TV, I have used their reports.

A substandard bag of meat and bones.
Ive never heard of this Samuel Johnstone.

What's he like?
He's been the alternate with Devlin for the Academy this season. He looks a decent prospect.

England look to have a very good squad and seem to have the better half of the draw. Connor Wickham will be one to look out for, can't be too many players in the tournament who have played first team football.

One's to watch in this tournament? Not mentioning United players for obvious reasons.

Are 17 y.o. not allowed? Would have liked to see Iker Muniain there. Don't recognize many names there. Will Keane, Jonas Ramalho, Paul Pogba and Yaya Sanogo are the only ones.

The first game, Spain Vs. France, starts today at 16:30pm UK time.

England vs. Czech Republic follows that at 19:30pm.

England Tipped as Team to Beat

Czech Republic coach Jiří Štol is tipping opening opponents England as "favourites" to emerge as Under-17 champions on a Group B opening day that also sees Greece face Turkey.

UEFA European Under-17 Championship Group B opens on Tuesday with the first meeting between Greece and Turkey in a final tournament and the Czech Republic taking on an England team tipped as favourites by their opponents' coach.

England were the only team to win all six of their qualifiers and have three players with experience of last season's finals in Germany. As such, Czech coach Jiří Štol, missing defender Jan Toms through suspension, believes John Peacock's side will take some beating in Vaduz.

"We have very strong opponents in our first match – "England in my eyes are favourites to win the tournament"," Štol said. "They won all their qualifying matches and we saw on DVD that they have a really strong team. But we will give all we have, the first match is an important one."

Peacock, managing England for the sixth time in the last eight U17 final tournaments, shied away from the "favourites" tag, grateful rather that his side departed on Sunday before the airspace over London was closed due to volcanic ash. Missing the versatile Conor Coady due to a one-game ban, Peacock said: ""We always have very tough games against the Czech Republic".

"It's always a good occasion, keenly contested, and this will be no different. I congratulate the Czech Republic, when they lost their first elite round game to Georgia it was always going to be a very tough competition for them to get through and they did it by beating a very good Dutch team in the last game."

I am not a man........I am Cantona
Good thread Joga, I was too lazy to start one myself.

I was looking at the squads the other night. Sam Johnstone, Tom Thorpe and Keane were all mentioned. But so was Ravel Morrison? (that may have been the 30 man provisional squad). Any ideas?

Also before poor Scholesy gets too excited its unlike Keane will get much playing time as the 3 other stikers have all been in great form for England and are somewhat more experienced.

Looking forward to seeing Thorpe. He reminds of Jonny Evans more and more. Very composed lad, good distribution aswell. This should be a good test for him.

A few of our other academy lads are unlucky not to get a call ups. Surely L Cole deserves some sort of recogition?

The squads on the UEFA site were confusing, because they included previous squads from the qualifiers. I used the wikipedia confirmed squads page, and then added in the other teams, as they were eventually confirmed on the UEFA website.

I have no idea why Ravel hasn't been included, but it could be for any number of reasons, I suppose.

Keane has been used as an attacking midfielder, if memory serves me correctly, which is why he has 6 appearances (and 3 goals) in the qualifiers, alongside Afobe, Wickham, and Hall. Whether that will continue, I have no idea, but there aren't many genuine midfielders in the squad, so I could see them using a two man defensive-midfield pairing who sit and protect the back four, and then attacking midfielders and forwards in the other positions.

I agree about Thorpe, and as is usual when watching a player regularly for the first time, and it being his first season at a new level, the thing that most stood out as the season progressed was how much quality he has on the ball. Only time will tell, but I'd go as far as saying that he's even better at this point than Evans was (and still is), in that regard. Thorpe looks to be a genuine ball playing center-half, the type of which we don't produce very often in the UK.

The Norwegian commentator creams himself over the assist, I don't think he did when Pogba did exactly the same. Real Madrid fan?

He did it again when he summarized the game. "... then France equalised before Paco (?) scored after a beeeaaauuutiful pass from [some Spanish name]." Ridiculous.

Pogba had a decent half. Won quite a few challenges and the assist was outstanding but I'm sure he'd have liked to have been more involved.
