Nice late run into the box, although the keeper probably should have saved it. Is it Rothwell who captains the United u-16's?
Yeah, I think so. He was arguably the classiest player out there tonight.

Wilson was....well, let's be honest, it doesn't really matter. He's a pacy left winger representing England in the Victory Shield with, figuratively speaking, the name 'Wilson' on the back of his shirt. He's pretty much made it already. And in 20 years' time, there will be another.

McNair's tiny and struggled to get into the game. Created a half chance with a good set-piece delivery and had a few nice touches. The mere fact that he's involved despite his physical stature suggests he's a bit of a player.

Wilson wasn't great, but isn't he supposed to be one of the best prospects at that age group? I think Jeston on the last page said he just turned 15, if thats true than the fact he made an appearance for the academy a few months back is very impressive. Certainly I remember him being mentioned as one of the best players in our most recent (and most successfull?) Premier cup campaign.

I seem to remember McNair being one of their better players in their last game despite his size so I was a bit surprised when I saw he wasn't starting.

Also is Pearson English? If he is I assume the only reason he is not in the squad is his size?

UEFA Championship - Elite Qualifying Phase
Republic of Ireland U17s 2-2 Denmark

Paul George bagged an injury-time equaliser to secure a draw for the Republic of Ireland against Denmark in their opening UEFA Under-17 Championship Elite Qualifying Round fixture in Agii-Theodori, Greece today.

Celtic striker George - making his debut for John Morling's side - slotted home in the 81st minute after connecting with a low right wing cross from Philip Roberts and squeezing it just past the goalkeeper.

The Danes thought they had claimed all three points with Copenhagen striker Kenneth Zohore - who played against Chelsea and Barcelona in the Champions League this season - had hit the net with three minutes left in regulation time.

Arsenal's Steven Smith and Watford's Tommie Hoban had kept a tight rein on the striker up to that point but Zohore showed his class when he pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire home via an upright.

The Irish had started well and broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Arsenal's Roberts headed past Danish keeper Oliver Korch from a Smith cross.

Belvedere FC's Darragh Lenihan had a chance to extend Ireland's lead in the 35th minute but Korch made an excellent stop from the midfielder's strike then reacted well to keep out Hoban's headed effort from the rebound.

Hoban was involved in a controversial equaliser for the Danes when he was penalised for a challenge on Riza Durmisi in the 39th minute and Viktor Fisher scored from the penalty spot. Irish keeper Joe Coll got a hand to the strike but could not keep it out.

Ireland picked up two bookings in the game with Lenihan and Luke Gallagher receiving cautions. Lenihan will miss out on the next Irish fixture against hosts Greece on Friday due to a booking picked up in the first qualifying round.

Greece beat Latvia 2-0 in their opening fixture today.

"We played very in the first half but the penalty decision was crucial. I've looked at the replay of it and I really can't see how a penalty could be awarded for that challenge," said Republic of Ireland under-17 manager John Morling.

"The lads were very disappointed at the break because we'd played very well but were just level.

"Both sides had plenty of chances and it looked like Denmark had won it when they scored with a few minutes left but we showed real character to bounce back and level.

"I'm delighted for Paul George to mark his first game with us with a goal. It was an excellent goal too after great play by Philip Roberts down the wing.

"Denmark were as good as any team we've played this year. That includes the likes of Italy, Portugal, Holland and the Czech Republic so I'm happy with the performance."

Republic of Ireland - Joe Coll (Man Utd); Colm Horgan (Salthill Devon), Sean Kavanagh (Belvedere), Thommie Hoban (Watford), Steven Smith (Arsenal), Luke Gallagher (Cherry Orchard), Kenneth McEvoy (Tottenham), Darragh Lenihan (Belvedere), Philip Roberts (Arsenal), Kealan Dillon (Derby County), Sam Byrne (St Joseph's Boys). Sub: Paul George (Celtic) for McEvoy 65 mins.

Rothwell the only player from last weeks win starting tonight for the U16's.

Pearson also just come on.

Rothwell seems very composed on the ball, waste very little and seems to like making runs into the box from midfield. Looks a very tidy player.

Dammit, I looked at the squad earlier and didn't think I saw either Pearson or Rothwell in it so didn't bother catching it.

Quite a few England u16s for next season in the Academy: Wilson, Hendrie, Barmby, Rothwell, Pearson.

According to the Chelseayouth guy on twitter

Was quite impressed tonight with #CPFC Inniss, #SFC Shaw, #AVFC Robinson, and #MUFC pair Rothwell and particularly Pearson.
About Pearson
Very tidy, busy, intelligent, good movement and played in an anchoring two well. Broke forward opportunely, looked good.
Pearson must be very highly rated by our coaching staff considering that he was taken on the U-18 training session in Malta when he was just only 14!

The Chelsea Youth guy seems to be very knowledgeable and relatively bias free. Well worth a follow.

The only time I saw Pearson he was playing in a holding role in the Premier Cup a couple of seasons back when they had longer highlights. He was very small but threw himself into tackles and looked very adroit on the ball. There was a rather obvious comparison, but totally unfair on such a young player, however it will be interesting to watch him develop.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the academy does next year. Lots of exciting talent coming in. As well of the 4 of those youv'e listed above (I assume Hendrie is the lad currently in the academy and not another u-16?). Isn't Kenji (sp?) Gorre coming through next year as well? Then theres Doanld Love who's already been involved, Daelhi and the young lad we're signing from Anderlecht and I'm probably still missing a few.

Seems like another exciting group of players.

Scholes? Came to mind for me too, albeit way too early to make any sort of judgement as to whether he's remotely in the same class. Can (and regularly does) play in a more advanced role as well, even upfront at times.

Got both the recent Victory Shield game recorded to watch, good to see us with plenty involved - James Weir was called up for the first game as well (back in Nov/Dec) but didn't play, in addition to Wilson, Rothwell and Pearson.

Think we're looking at quite a big and intriguing intake this summer.

Yeah, but as you say, far too early and unfair burden him with such comparisons.

I thought I might have forgotten one! It seems we have a lot of midifielders/attacking midfielders in the intake. Maybe we'll field a 4-6-0 next year!

I was thinking about that the other day - Ekangamene, Lawrence, Hendrie, van Velzen, Rothwell, Pearson, Weir, Daehli, Januzaj, Barmby, Gorré, Wilson... awful lot of competition there (assuming all the u16s get taken on - think Wilson and maybe Weir are both u15s and too young for scholarships as well). In contrast, not many defenders or forwards in the mix that we know of yet (although lots of those midfielders are versatile).

I'm actually quite enjoying seeing the Academy play without a recognised striker as it has forced the midfielders to take on more responsibility and try and get in the box more. Cole and Lingard in particular have thrived and we've played some excellent football as there isn't the option to go direct without a Cofie/Keane.

It's definitely an interesting crop of U16s, all very good technically and versatile as you say. If we're out of the race to top the Academy League hopefully we'll get a preview of what to expect next season, as with the game v Blackburn a couple if seasons back, or else we'll have to wait for the Milk Cup.

What about McNair? Is he a year younger?

U15s Devonte Redmond (forward) and Joe Riley (right-back/right mid) attended an England U16 training camp/trials thingy last week. Might see them in the Victory Shield this season.

U21 squad announced....Any gooners care to elaborate on Rhys Murphy, our latest "signing" ?

Liking Noel Kings approach compared to Givens. Great to see Brady there as well. Man of the match in his latest start for Ireland. Scannel is back to the form that saw him called up to the Senior squad a couple of years ago, he could be a very interesting option for us one day.

Is he playing? If so, what number is he?

Edit: Such a shame Wilson is injured, surely he would've been one of England's main lads this season. Does anyone(PS..?) have any further info on his injury? All I've heard is that it's meant to be a bad one.

Pretty sure he's hasn't been part of Wales' back 4 in the second half.
