BBC News - South Belfast security alert under way

South Belfast security alert under way.

A security alert is under way on Annadale Avenue in south Belfast after a suspect object was discovered on Tuesday.

Army technical officers were called to the scene at about 0130 BST and the police helicopter was also launched.

No homes were evacuated but the road closure from Mornington Place to Wellington Square is still in place.

There is no through access from Ormeau Avenue and motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journey.

BBC reporter Kevin Sharkey said full details of the alert are yet to emerge.

"A suspicious object was found overnight and army specialists were examining it," he said.

"This is a key cross city link road from the Saintfield Road direction intro and around south Belfast.

"There is no through traffic from the top of Ormeau road but both Grovesnor Bridge and the Kings Bridge remain open."

Yip, we can get Irish passports these days. Must admit I don't know when that began. I'd say good friday agreement but would be a guess at best
its great having two passports, just incase you lose one or it gets stolen or you have to do a bunk from a country.

I don't get that annadale bomb. Let's take their viewpoint that the poilce are traitors who must be killed (I in no way think that, just run with me on this). How the feck do they justify leaving a bomb attached to a park gate that could kill an "innocent" (as opposed to the "guilty" police in their eyes) person or even a child? fecking idiots
It's always been like that though. Lots of civilian targets.

BBC News - Blast bomb thrown at police patrol in Craigavon

A blast bomb has been thrown at a police foot patrol in the Meadowbrook area of Craigavon.

Police said the officers were on routine patrol at about 1010 BST on Wednesday when the device was thrown.

None of the officers - from the PSNI's neighbourhood team - were injured.

District Commander, Chief Supt Alasdair Robinson said it was "a mindless attack on police officers just trying to do their jobs".

"It is by sheer good fortune that one of those officers was not killed or seriously injured," he added.

"Earlier this week we launched the policing commitments, our pledge to communities about what they can expect from us.

"Those officers were out on the streets delivering on that pledge, providing people with the kind of community based policing service they want."

They had made a hoax 999 call about an assault on a woman I think. I guess they hoped the police would arrive first. Idiots whatever way you look at it.

PJ you do realise the Ra have always planted bombs knowing full well that innocents may be caught up in it?

BBC News - Trip wire would have set off Annadale Embankment bomb

Trip wire would have set off Annadale Embankment bomb

Police have said the bomb left on south Belfast's Annadale Embankment on Monday night would have been triggered by a trip wire.

More details of the attack were released as police issued a new appeal for information.

Police were lured to the area by a hoax call saying a woman was in distress.

Detectives want to talk to a group of young people in two cars on the embankment shortly before police were called to the scene at 2348 BST.

One of the cars appeared to have run out of petrol.

PSNI Detective Superintendent David Cunningham said it was "only by good fortune" that police officers or members of the public were not killed.

"The device was small but viable," D/Supt Cunningham said.

"It was designed to detonate as officers went through a gate into a wooded area, triggering by a trip wire attached to the fence at the top of the Annadale Embankment where the S-bend on the road leads onto Annadale Avenue."

He said a hoax 999 call gave information about a man and woman arguing at the gate and that the woman appeared to be in distress.

When police arrived a short time later they opened the gate to check out the area.

"We want to talk to a group of young people who had stopped in two cars close to the gate at about 11.40pm on Monday night," he added.

"They could well have significant information which will assist this investigation.

"We think the cars might have been a dark-coloured Peugeot 206 and a small silver car."

He stressed the young people had done nothing wrong, but might have information that could help police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at North Queen Street, telephone 028 9056 1804 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

No-one has admitted responsibility for the attack, but dissident republicans are being blamed.

Not really bothered about the queens visit to Ireland, and really couldnt care much if she ran up O`Connell street wearing just her crown.

But I am very surprised that they played God Save the Queen when she was laying the Wreath at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin.

Not a big deal really considering it was played at Croke Park. That being said O Driscoll didnt kick the queens arse after it was played!

I think its a bit more significant than when it was done at Croke Park (not downplaying that of course).

But its almost like she gave with one hand by coming to lay the wreath and acknowledge the dead, and then took it away with the other by having that played there. "Yes, I acknowledge what you all did, but let hear it for me just one more time while im here....."

I mean was it even necessary? Could some planner not have thought "Actually here it will be better if we dont play it?" they played it as she got off the plane!!! How many times does it need to be played?

Probably play it again at Croker and all tomorrow......

Most people would surely disagree given what happened there. Not that its of any real relevance anyway. Time to move on.

We've a complex past thats for sure buts shes still the head of state of our nearest neighbours and deserves the respect shown to all foreign dignitaries.

I think yest was a great day for the Country, we've had far too hang-ups with many things British, including the anthem, it was a great ceremony altogether. Personally i dont have a problem with the anthem other than its a bit shit tbh... i mean like - "God save the Queen", surely she must be embarrassed by that. If someone wrote a song "God save the Red Hand Devil" - i'd be cringeing like feck...

Anyway, its gonna put Ireland back on the map in a positive way & then we've got Obama next week also. Gotta make the most of all positives!

No problem with the anthem at all, in isolation.

I think my point has got lost a little bit.

I was trying to point out the juxtaposition of her coming to lay a wreath at the Garden of Remembrance, which was created in honour of all of those who fought and died for independence from the British, and the playing of God Save The Queen there which represents exactly everything those who died were fighting AGAINST!

It totally waters down the effect of her going there in the first place in my opinion.

If they were going to play an anthem there surely The Soliders Song would have been more appropriate - or better still none at all!!

They played the Soldiers song man - at the end..

Certain things have a very negative representation. For instance the Union Jack & the Tricolour are used in a very negative way up in Northern Ireland, but if you go to London or Dublin - both flags arent threatening at all...

I think folk have to just try to take a step away from negative representations that they hold, and try to regard them as just another Country's flag or anthem... adapting a no big deal type of attitude..

For what its worth, i thought the Queen doing that yesterday was a fantastic gesture & its been well accepted that her visit is a great moment for both Countries. The present Royal family arent enemies of Ireland, not even sure they ever were, the military & previous governments, landlords etc.. were more of a hate figure tbh.. and this present Royal family dont deserve anything but best wishes.. they're harmless!
