So as good, better or too early to say?
It's impossible to say

You can see that Morrison and Pogba are exceptional at this level, you just can't know how they will develop and how much of their superiority is down to their physical attributes at that age.

They definitely have talent, but it's a big gap between U18 level and first team

Very good performance. Spare a thought for the injured Sheffield lad.

Well done lads, very proud. Some very exciting talent there.

This is what United were doing while City were parading their oil-money tin-pot. They can spend another half a billion and they won't see their kids doing this.

really enjoyed that - some great performances from the kids - some of the passing would put some premier league teams to shame

winning the league, fa youth cup, becks and neville down the right wing tomorrow night and CL final on saturday......

what a brilliant week!

Way too early to say but they would need to be better to push their way into the current team. Back in 1992/3/4 United didn't have the depth they have today. When we lost three starters in the summer SAF was pretty much forced into using the kids.

The thing about the 92 team is we didn't produce a striker. Wellbeck/King are exceptional as is Cofie but Keane showed great composure not to rush his efforts. People think i go overboard but I agree with Neville. The size of the team is very good. It's probably bigger (maybe) stronger then that team. They have similar desire and strength when things aren't going well but if we buy 3/4 then it could deny a very talented player

Second half was exceptional. Sheffield United played well but we grew into the game and that was very much a Manchester United performance. We shouldn't be afraid of the future. Another great advertisement for youth football.

that's worded wrong I think. Sir Alex knew what he was doing, he wasn't forced. He believed in them and they delivered.

Well, they won it 4 years ago and certainly seem to have one of the best academies around. I wonder if they'll put less emphasis on bringing players through now that they're rolling in cash. Would be great for us if they did, the retarded 90 min rule isn't going away anytime soon.

Yep. That was probably Fergie's biggest gamble in his managerial career. Letting go of three of our best players in Ince, Hughes and Kanchelskis was a huge show of faith to the likes of Scholes, Butt and the Nevilles, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions Fergie ever made. I'd be delighted if even one of our current crop could have a similar impact that that lot had.

The 92 team were very special.

If you go back through the history of youth football a team is lucky to get one or two starters from a winning youth team. Only reall exceptions have been teh 92 team and Busby Bases, and maybe the 1986 City team but they only played low level 1st division or 2nd division anyway.
I think Leeds, West Ham, Villa and Middlesbrough would all disagree with that assessment even based on just the last 15 years, possibly even City too.

Well done to the Youth team. I thought that what the commentator said at the end was very apt, that all those cold and windy mornings out on the training grounds at Carrington were for a moment like this and hopefully winning the FA Youth Cup at Old Trafford will now have made the players hungrier going forward in their footballing careers.

The regular players were the standouts - Morrison, Pogba, Keane and Tunnicliffe. I have to say, I'm not fully convinced by the defence still but there's still a lot of progress to be made in all areas.

Very promising stuff overall, a great way to cap off the season and a really special moment seeing the players lift the FA Youth Cup when you consider the historical significance that the trophy has with the club.

Right - lots of good players have come through at those clubs, very few of them among the best in Europe.

Who in the group of 15 players who start regularly for United isn't currently among the best in Europe in his position? Sheasy, Gibson, maybe Park, Fletcher and Anderson. That's it.

Different levels and TBH none of the ones you mentioned had a massive return from their Youth Cup winning team. The 1992 team and Busby Babes teams both produced top international players.

Your post said that you're lucky if you only get 1 or maybe 2 first team players from a youth cup winning side, and that United are the only exceptions. Well all those sides I mentioned have had at least 3-4 first teamers emerge from their respective cup winning sides, and that just in the last 15 years or so.

My definition of a first team player is obviously very different to yours. I would consider someone a first team player if they play at least 30 games a year for a few years.

Aston Villa didn't get one player of note from their 2001 team. They had three or four players that stuck around and were squad players but most the rest fell by the wayside.

Same story for the 2004 Middlesborough, and West Ham's 1999 team produce Carrick and Cole plus a bunch of scrubs.

Not quite true....United have had a history of getting 2/3 through in MOST years...in the 1950's, 1964, 1992 and 1995 it was many more but most years we do ok.

1981 brought through Hughes, Whiteside, McGarvey, Garton, Hogg, Blackmore plus a couple of others

1986 gave us Lee Martin, Russell Beardsmore, Gary Walsh

1966 gave us Brian Kidd, Francis Burns, Steve James

1972 gave us Brian Greenhoff, Sammy McIlroy, Arnie Sidebottom

1977 gave us Mike Duxbury, Andy Ritchie, Steve Pears

1989 gave us Mark Bosnich, Lee Sharpe, Darren Ferguson

It's impossible to bring through 5/6 every year...the maths just don't work!

United still have the best record in Britain.

I believe that we're bringing in quality from abroad and because of that I think the standards rising and I think there's a chance that a good handful can come through. It's tough to say how many, but I think the quality (in terms of numbers) has never been better.

There are a few reasons in addtion to that. The money it would save the club is an obvious one. The continuity it'd provide. The fact we've good youngsters. The fact our teams maturing and there are positions available which didn't use to be the case.

Exciting times

Was a very entertaining affair got home around 6.30 this morning. Fornasier needs to work on his anticipation and positioning but I only noticed this because Tom Thorpe's is so good.

On a whole what was expected to happen, happened. Sheff Utd put up a fight at theirs but were outdone here.
Cofie looked desperate to get on the scoresheet when he came on but I can't be the only person impressed by Cole's cameo? There was a play where he was called offside from a Pogba pass I think but his chest control in the move was sublime, completely took the defender out of the game!
