Real Sociedad de Fútbol, S.A.D., more commonly referred to as Real Sociedad or La Real, is a Spanish professional sports club in the city of San Sebastián, Basque Country. Football was introduced to San Sebastián in the early 1900s by students and workers returning from Britain. In 1904, they formed the San Sebastian Recreation Club and in 1905 the club competed in the Copa del Rey. In May 1905, the San Sebastian Football Club was formed as a separate branch of the club. In 1909, it applied to enter the Copa del Rey but complications over registration permits saw them compete as Club Ciclista de San Sebastián. This team defeated Club Español de Madrid 3–1 in the final. Out of the confusion, the Sociedad de Futbol was formed on 7 September 1909. Subsequently, the club was a founder member of La Liga in 1929.

Traditionally the club followed a policy (similar to that of its rival Athletic) of signing only Basque players, before signing Republic of Ireland forward John Aldridge in 1989. While a strong Basque contingent has been retained among its players, nowadays both non-Basque Spaniards and foreign players are represented at the club. Its youth section subsequent to the all-Basque era has still been very successful in developing internationally renowned players, such as World Cup winners Xabi Alonso and Antoine Griezmann. Real Sociedad won the Liga title in 1980–81 and 1981–82, and last finished runner-up in 2002–03. The club has also won the Copa del Rey twice, in 1909 and 1987. It contests the Basque derby against rivals Athletic Bilbao, and plays its home games at the Anoeta Stadium.

    I'd like to see:
    Dubravka
    AWB-Varane-Maguire-Shaw
    ---------Casemiro-Fred-----------
    Antony-----Bruno-----Elanga
    ---------------Ronaldo---------------

Rotation is key, and this team looks good on paper.
    Please rest Eriksen.

    Team should be...

    -----------------De Gea-----------------
    AWB--Lindelof--Maguire--Shaw
    ---------------Casemiro---------------
    -----Fernandes----Fred----
    Antony-----Ronaldo-----Elanga

Subs: Dubravka, Dalot, Malacia, McTominay, VDB, Zidane, Sancho, Rashford, Garnacho

Hopefully that back 4 is fit, certainly don't want to see Varane and Martinez looked like he came off injured today

Are Sociedad any good this season?

I still don’t know if to laugh or cry about the thought of 4-5 times CL winners Ronaldo, Varane and Case potentially playing in the Europa  :(

Starts for Maguire Ronaldo Martial Antony Fred and Casemiro
Not sure about the rest. It is the biggest game of the group stage so we have to field a good eleven.

That actually looks like a decent second 11. Get the win, secure the next stage and then blood youngsters, want to see plenty of Iqbal and co in this competition.

Assuming VDB is injured, otherwise he probably starts in place of Iqbal.

Pack the bench with kids and Antony who needs some minutes, give the rest of the team some much deserved time off.

Yep that looks pretty spot on.

Amazing to think we've essentially replaced the whole back 4 as starters in such a short timescale.

Ignoring Ronaldo who has nearly 200 international caps alone, the others have 293 between them with AWB the only one uncapped. Should definitely be able to hold their own against Real Sociedad though I'd understand if there are more starters in the team with it being one of the toughest games in the group.

They've played on equal footing against Atletico Madrid at home, per the stats. And we are dreadful against Spanish sides. This is a hard one, because we need to win all our home games in the EL. But wholesale changes are also needed.

    Dubravka
    AWB Maguire Lindelof* Shaw
    Casemiro
    Fred VdB*
    Antony Ronaldo Garnacho
*if those are injured, then I don't know. Phil Jones? Iqbal? :nervous:

You’re ignoring the fact you can’t throw players together vs a team and expect much.

Full rotation basically! Unless Van de Beek is still injured then my guess is Bruno will start. Antony too but I still see him as more 3rd until he's more settled out of the wingers. The Ole back 4.

Full rotation needed. Let some guys hopefully have good games and put pressure on the first XI and let’s see some youth.

Rotation is necessary although we still need to keep momentum. Changing the entire back four against A decent Sociedad is risky and I won't be shocked if we drop points here.

Yes I like that team but would be nice to give the new goalie a run out.
