balance wasn't quite right last night and away from home against decent opposition i think we need two of Sweinsteiger, Carrick and Schneiderlein

Mata and Herrera should rotate at 10

if Jones is fit he goes straight in at CB, if not keep Blind at CB and play Rojo at LB

my team for the weekend would be

    --------------------------------------DDG------------------------------------
    Darmian-------------Smalling----------------Jones (Blind)------Blind (Rojo)
    ----------------------Carrick-------------------Schneiderlein-----------------
    Young-------------------------Mata--------------------------------Memphis
    ------------------------------------Martial------------------------------------

This is what i would play, two pacy players and two creative players around them. At least we will be a handful!

I don't think we should disrupt what has been a good CB partnership, so keep Blind and Smalling together and play Rojo on the wing. Our attacking four will depend on the fitness of Rooney, however I don't think he will start as Van Gaal normally makes players play in the U-21s until their fit so I think we can expect to see Martial back up front. Memphis was fairly good against PSV and probably should have scored a hat-trick, however in the league he is still a bit rusty and it makes me wonder if we should experiment with him as the striker and Martial out on the left. Of course, I realise it might be a bit soon to try out, but it's worth considering in my opinion. I would go with Mata in the CAM and bring on Herrera if Mata is not creating enough or if we need a goal.

    De Gea

    Darmian
    Smalling
    Blind
    Rojo

    Carrick
    Schneiderlin

    Young
    Mata
    Memphis

    Martial

If Rooney's not back then Herrera at #10, Schneiderlin to come on for Schweini at some point and Pereira...

I'd be very inclined to Give Valencia a shot on the right in place of Mata. Use his pace and drive to cross to Martial (if he can find the form again). In this instance i'd put Rojo LB .

Something the selection we have now though makes me think the 352 could work now, great CM partnership, Rojo/Blind/Smalling could form a dynamic threesome with pace, tenacity and positional awareness. Young and Darmian would thrive in the wingback roles adding extra men going back and pace going forward. Memphs and Martial supported by Herrera could pick holes in any defence. Full of pace, trickery and creativity with a solid spine.

Main issue is obviously left back. Do we move Blind out there and disrupt the solid defense, or do we put Rojo there and hope he can do the job?

One argument for having Blind there is his passing and vision. Rojo isn't really going to help Memphis/Young much up front, so maybe it's better to have Rojo as CB.

Alternately we could use Young as LB and keep Blind at CB, which is probably what I'd want.

Why would you prefer to move Blind out the LB (when he's been excellent at CB), and play someone who hasn't played for us this season at CB, rather than on the left?

Can't understand why people want to break what isn't broken to fix another part.

    DDG
Darmian Mike Blind + 1 should be a prerequisite. We can offer different cover for the LB depending on who plays LW..

I'd rather have Young LW, Memphis RW and Rojo at LB. Blind has outperformed nearly everyone this season so far, why would you disturb that?

This is what I think LVG will choose, not what I'd choose. The fact that Blind went to lb and Rojo cb in the PSV game suggests that is probably more likely. Likewise the fact that Mata had such a poor game combined with LVG's preference for an attacker rather than midfielder at cam is why Mata is back on the rw and Memphis is in behind Rooney.

I am not looking forward to this. Mane is going to tear us a new one, especially if Blind plays LB. A very tough game to play. I predict a loss and for the first time in ages too. If that means we go on to win then wahey. But basically Im shitting myself.

This is a difficult place to go. I'll go on a bender if we'll win this one. Not overly optimistic. Draw would be perfectly fine by me.

The irony of the fixture list, I'm sure Shaw will be getting a lot of love on Sunday. Let's win it for Luke!

Mata probably played his worst game under LvG last night, so I can see him being dropped. Carrick will probably come back in for Mata, with Herrera moving to the No.10 role and perhaps Schneiderlin taking over from Schweinsteiger. If Rooney is 100% then he'll probably play instead of Young or Martial.

Slow game with Fellaini coming on with 20 minutes to go...

De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Rojo, Blind; Carrick, Schneiderlin; Young, Herrera, Memphis; Rooney

Romero; Valencia, McNair; Schweinsteiger, Fellaini, Mata; Martial

I'm really not looking forward to this one. Couldn't have gone into a worse fixture we had to bounce back in. Hopefully some luck falls our way like last season's clash with them.

It would be madness dropping schweinsteiger when tbh he was excellent again last night and looks to be on top form. Personally I would go with

    -------------------------Dave-------------------------
    Damian-----Smalling------------blind/Rojo----------blind/Rojo -------
    Mata-------------Carrick--------schweinsteiger -----------Memphis -----
    -------------------------Rooney /Herrera ------------------------------
    --------------------------Martial-----------------------------

Would have been nice to have an easier fixture after yesterdays loss, lets hope we can atleast get a draw, although our record against Southampton has been decent lately.

The last thing I want is to see Rojo at CB and Blind at LB this season. Rojo is a liability at CB and it would disrupt the blossoming Smalling / Blind CB partnership. Rojo looked OK at LB for Argentina - I wouldn't mind him there, or Young maybe

If he doesn't play, I don't think its a case of "dropping" him - I'm sure Schweisteiger was brought here to rotate with Carrick and I'm sure we'll see that throughout this season, so that both stay fresh and (hopefully) fit. Both are excellent players.

Mane down the right for them is going to be a real handle for us now. I'm not sure if any of Blind/Jones/Rojo have the ability to keep him in check for 90 mins. Can see this becoming a high scoring game and I'm not too confident of us scoring many away from home right now.

The defence will consist of Darmian, Smalling, Rojo, Blind. I can't see someone getting their first minutes of the season away from home here, injuries permitting! Young at left back is a risk for many reasons, the most obvious one in my opinion being that we would be left with very little option from the bench. Valencia at RB and Darmian at LB could work in the future but I wouldn't potentially disrupt what has been a very solid start to Darmian's Utd career just yet.

    I think I'd go with:

    De Gea
    Darmian Smalling Rojo Blind
    Schneiderlin Carrick
    Young Herrera Memphis
    Rooney/Martial

Romero, Valencia, McNair, Mata, Shweinsteiger, Martial/Rooney, Pereira

Schneiderlin's cover is going to be massively important to us now with Shaw out. Darmian looks like he could use a rest but won't be able to find one here. Schweinsteiger looked to burn out a little last night and, as brilliant as he is when we're in control/winning, he seems to rush his game so far when we've been behind. Mata, in my opinion, was very poor last night and doesn't warrant starting on the weekend. Gives us a genuine creative outlet to bring on as well. I fear that Memphis on the left will allow Southampton to exploit us down that side, but I think he gets lost in other positions and I'd like to see LVG trusting his superior attacking abilities to those of Southampton.

If Rooney is fit he should start ahead of Martial. It's a lot to ask of a 19 year old to lead the line again. I wouldn't mind experimenting with Martial on the right and Rooney op top in a less tricky fixture though. Fellaini nowhere near the team. He's hopeless coming off the bench when we need a goal as it disrupts everyone's natural game and defenders (particularly in the league) know how to nullify his presence and win fouls off him. Fellani starting results in us playing as if we're running through cement.

Think young might start, not sure for who though. Rest schweinsteiger as he looked knackered against PSV. No Shaw :(

I think some people are being a bit too pessimistic, Southampton has had a pretty bad start, they clearly miss Schneiderlin. I know our away form hasn't been the best, but we really should win here.

Shaw would have had a stormer against his old club and the way he's playing.

I think we'll draw. Never confident away from home these days.
