McGinn is suspended for this game which is a plus and Nakamba is injured, so I think we should play Donny in midfield with Matic Fred to control the game. Unlikely but we might see Coutinho…

    DeGea
    Wan Bissaka Varane Maguire Telles

    Matic Fred
    Donny

    Bruno Ronaldo Sancho?

RR keeps talking about controlling the game on and off the ball. We won't do that in our current set up, especially with attacking players we have, who are much suited to a counter attacking games than a possession-based one.

With that in mind, I think we should pack the midfield and gain control of the ball and then look to free up our forward players. I'd be looking at something like:

    De Gea
    Dalot Lindelof Varane Shaw
    Van de Beek McTominay Fred
    Sancho Cavani Bruno

Heaton Jones Wan-Bissaka Telles Matic Lingard Greenwood Elanga Rashford

Am I right in thinking we haven’t lost at Villa since the famous “You win nothing with kids” game in 95?

This 4222 would be suicidal in away matches until we master it. Just go for a Matic,Donny,Fred midfield and Elanga, Rashford, Sancho forward.
Villa will play a high line and they shouldn't even know what hit them.

Good team but with Dalot for AWB and Jones/Lindelof for Maguire. I know Lindelof was bad but he was rusty. Should be better this game. Happy with either him or Jones but not Maguire. 3 in mid is essential though.

I just think Dalot might not play because there was a photo of a nasty gash on his ankle on Twitter that looked like it needed stitches but if fit yeah Dalot over AWB..

Like that side, possibly Greenwood for Bruno as well.

Hmm hang on a sec, that's effectively VdB in for Bruno now that I think about it.

Dion Dublin has done a number on everyone with his commentary. I'm not saying United weren't bad, we were in fact terrible and Villa carved through our midfield very easily, however, we threatened them a fair bit as well but were horribly lacking in front of goal. On the whole for 90 mins, the game could've gone either way, and if anything, we created more.

    Stats:
    Shots: Man Utd 19 - Villa 13
Shots on target: Man Utd 9 - Villa 4
    Possession: Man Utd 54% - Villa 46%

Good point. Listening to the BBC commentary you would think Villa were robbed.

That commentary team were so biased. Both teams were bad in front of goal and made poor decisions but they made out Villa had been the victim of a smash and grab.

Most of our shots were long-range though and it was all Villa second half. Two disallowed goals and they hit the bar. I remember Greenwood striking about 4 at the keeper. Villa had a lot of good chances.

Think Bruno in or Greenwood for Ronaldo (or Cavani for Ronaldo).
Like to see Brunothere though cause he can link with Donny and Ronaldo. And Donny can link to Sancho. Decent side.

I can't think of much outside of the Watkins chance that was inside the box for them to be honest. We had some good chances as well - Cavani when Bruno played him in was about 6 yards out but their defender got a little touch which made it an easier save, obviously Rashford should have set Greenwood up for a tap in, Greenwood where he should have set Rashford up for a tap in at the end/Rashford not following up on the rebound. We actually had better chances in the box when I watch the highlights back, we were just dire in how we played the actual game.

They had two goals ruled out, the Watkins one, a couple good De Gea saves and a couple whistle just past the post. Overall, it was prob more even than a lot of people make out, at least in chances. But in overall play, they were streets ahead of us. That second half was a long, painful watch till we brought Donny on. Then they stopped creating anything until near the end where they took control once again. We play like that on Saturday, they will beat us. We need 3 in midfield to get some control back. Then we have plenty of options. Bruno and Sancho + Greenwood/Cavani/Ronaldo. Or we could play Elanga for Sancho. The mid 3 is the most important though if we want to get something from that game. Come on Ralf, you know it makes sense!

Not debating they were much better in open play but in terms of clear cut chances, I think really it's only the Watkins one. The one that went just past the post was actually a good block from McT but was a shot from outside the area so not sure it was one you'd think is a great chance. Can't really count disallowed goals as chances either in my opinion so it's basically Lindelof's brian fart and a lot of shots from distance.

Hit Rashy on the break, keep it tight at the back. Should be able to make it a difficult game for them.
