Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel or just Basel, is a Swiss professional football club based in Basel. FC Basel was started by an advertisement on 12 November 1893 that appeared in the Basler national newspaper requesting that a football team be formed and that anyone that wished to join should meet up the following Wednesday at 8:15. So, on 15 November 1893, FC Basel was born in the city of Basel. One of the early clubs captains was Joan Gamper, who later founded FC Barcelona in Spain. FC Basel did not have much of an early footballing success; it took them 40 years to win their first trophy, winning the Swiss Cup in 1933 when they defeated arch-rivals and reigning cup-holders Grasshopper Club Zürich 4–3, in what is now considered to be one of the best cup finals in Swiss football history.

Basel's long-awaited title-win came in 1977 as they triumphed over Servette FC in a playoff. This meant that Basel returned to play in the European Cup but they were defeated in the first round once more, this time by Wacker Innsbruck of Austria, after showing so much promise on their last European outing. After years of disappointment, success followed Christian Gross' appointment in 1999. In 2002, Basel won the double (Swiss Championship and Swiss Cup) and reached the final of the Intertoto Cup. In the following season, they were the second Swiss team to ever play in the Champions League. The city of Basel and the city of Zürich have a long-standing rivalry. Therefore, FCB's most traditional and fiercest rivals are Grasshopper Club Zürich and FC Zürich. Basel play home games at St. Jokob-Park, which is currently the largest club stadium in Switzerland.

    Darmian-VNL-Rojo-Blind
    --------Pogba-Herrera-------
    Mata-------Mikhi-----Martial
    --------------Lukaku-------------

Pogba needs matches now, I would rest Matic.
Zlatan can come on for Lukaku and Smalling for Rojo on the 60th min.

    Permutations:

If CSKA fail to beat Benfica, United are through.
If United avoid defeat in Basel, United are through as group winners.
If United lose by fewer than three goals in Basel, or by a three goal margin while scoring themselves, United are through.

We'll probably play this. Not sure if it's needed here to use Pogba from the start, we've pretty much won the group already. Would say Lukaku as well but I'm sure Mourinho likes having Lukaku on to get more goals whenever he can for his confidence.

Just a draw to win the group. That's an excellent position to be in!

Interesting lineup ahead. Too soon for another Pogba start? Too soon for Ibra and Rojo to start? Hard to tell.

Just give Matic a rest is all I ask. The man has played non stop. McTominay should get a game and I'm hoping, as Gomes was subbed off early today in the U18s, he might make the bench.

Wouldn't mind seeing this for 60 minutes then having Herrera Rashford and Mata come on for the remaining.

A draw is more than enough, so let's rest the players :

    Romero
    Darmian - Lindelof - Smalling - Blind
    Fellaini - Carrick - Herrera
Lingard - Zlatan or Rashford - Martial

Edit : Forget Mikhi actually exists. Can play instead of Carrick then.

    Prefer Zlatan to start too.

Actually Matic got enough rest during the international break.

I'd like to enjoy the game, but to be honest avoiding defeat with any kind of performance will do for me.

We can also give Rojo a game here.

Many options to choose from. Will be a fun game with zero pressure.

We better not play for a draw. Confidence building match. Let's play Lindelof - Smalling - Rojo in a back 3 to give Rojo some minutes without a lot of pressure.

Take no risks with any of our important players or any of the recently returned from injury (albeit I'm only talking Pogba and Zlatan here)

I don't think Ibra will be ready to start this but Lukaku has played a lot of minutes. Probably needs a rest. At least Matic got a rest during the international break and so did Valencia.

I think we'll see the fullbacks rested and some game time for Lingard as well as a start for Ibra.

    Ibra
    Martial Lingard Mata
    Fellaini Herrera

Get a goal and then rest Mata.

    DDG
    Darmian-Lindelof-Rojo-Blind
    Pogba-Fellaini
    Lingard-Mkhi-Martial
    Ibra

    Reasons
DDG - did very little on Saturday so should be ok
    Darmian- Valencia to be rested.
Lindelof - play him when his confidence is high
Rojo - Give him minutes the get back.
Blind - young to be rested
Pogba- has played 1 game in 2 months, that too 60 mins. Should be ok
Fellaini- give him a Game to get back into groove
    Lingard - rotation
Mkhi - may play better in Europe
Martial - subbed off on sat so likely to start
Ibra - give him 90 minutes to get into groove and rest lukaku.

Why are people asking for Gomes? No way should he actually play now.

We may go 3-5-2 for this as well.

    Romero
    Smalling - Lindelof - Rojo
    Darmian - Herrere - Fellaini - Blind
    Mikhi
    Zlatan - Martial
Hell getting 11/11 for this will be very hard.

    I went with:

    Romero
    Darmian - Lindelöf - Rojo - Blind
    Herrera - Matic - Fellaini
    Mkhitaryan - Lukaku - Lingard

But Darmian might have a knock, and Shaw is maybe ready to start since he was on the bench yesterday, so I'm not sure.

Pogba and Zlatan in at the 60th to give Matic and Lukaku a rest.

Basel dropped 3 at the back lately, they've been playing 4-2-3-1. So I guess it's less likely we'll feature 3 at the back, unless Mourinho wants a really quiet controlling game. Without both Pogba and Matić, as you suggest, it might be the only way to get it.
