Manchester City Football Club (nicknamed City, The Citizens, and The Sky Blues), are a professional football club based in Manchester, England. City were founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton), before being renamed as Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887, and finally Manchester City in 1894 - and the origins can be traced back to members of St. Mark's Church of England, West Gorton - who founded the football club that would become known as Manchester City, for largely humanitarian purposes. Two church wardens sought to curb local gang violence and alcoholism by instituting new activities for local men, whilst high unemployment plagued East Manchester, specifically Gorton. All men were welcome to join, regardless of religion.

The team's first recorded match occurred on 13 November 1880, and City gained their first honours by winning the Second Division in 1899 - with it came promotion to the highest level in English football, the First Division. In the seasons following the FA Cup triumph of 1904, the club was dogged by allegations of financial irregularities, culminating in the suspension of seventeen players in 1904, including captain Billy Meredith, who subsequently moved across town to Manchester United. Almost half a century later later, a City team inspired by a tactical system known as the Revie Plan reached consecutive FA Cup finals again, in 1955 and 1956; just as in the 1930s, they lost the first one, to Newcastle United, and won the second. The club continued to challenge for honours throughout the 1970s, finishing one point behind the league champions on two occasions and reaching the final of the 1974 League Cup.

Prior to the takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, the club had enjoyed moderate levels of success through their history - however, since the start of the current decade, City have been buoyed by the signings of Sergio Agüero, Yaya Touré, David Silva, Pablo Zabaleta, Vincent Kompany - and have emerged as perpetual title contenders - winning the league thrice and repeatedly finishing in the Top 3. City play their homes games at the Etihad Stadium, and their biggest rivals are neighbours and opponents for the game, Manchester United.

I'd probably start Herrera instead of Matic but can't see him ever being dropped.

I'll probably be a happier man if I just watched the second half of every game from now on.

If we have an intent to press high up and cause problems then it will be a very interesting match. Just hope we don’t build a wall of players and hope for a draw. After tonight we should be optimistic going into this

Thankfully Lukaku is looking like he is still out. Might actually grind out a result like we did today. Hoping for:

    De Gea
    Young Smalling Lindelof Shaw
    Herrera
    Fellaini Pogba
    Mata Sanchez Martial

Possibly Rashford in for Mata, though would be useful having him off the bench later when we need him.

Hoping for best but dreading the worst, we have a habit of making a fool of ourselves anytime we go into a big game with some momentum. Remember Sevilla after beating Scouse last year? :(

Fellaini-Pogba-Herrera is by far our strongest midfield. As long as we play that midfield with Martial wide left, we can trouble them. The rest of the team is much of muchness.

Going to have disrupt their rhythm at every turn.

A great deal of cynicism is required for this one.

    Team should be...

    ---------------De Gea---------------
    Young--Smalling--Lindelof--Shaw
    ---------------Herrera---------------
    -------Pogba------------Matic-------
    Lingard-------Sanchez-------Martial

Subs: Romero, Bailly, Darmian, Fellaini, Fred, Mata, Rashford

Sanchez looked like he'd picked up a knock on his thigh which is worrying. Hope he starts ahead of Lukaku, and surely we have to start with Rashford/ Mata, Martial and Sanchez up front.

    I'd go for:

    DDG

    Young Smalling Lindelof Shaw

    Herrera Pogba Fellaini

    Rashford Sanchez Martial

Matic will probably start though. Annoying.

Line up won't be that different to the Juve game. The GK and back four pick themselves, Herrera, Pogba and Matic in midfield. If Sanchez is out I can see Mata coming in and Rashford playing centrally and Martial on the left.

I think we'll be ultra cautious and keep it as tight as possible. City will probably score first and then we'll come out swinging like last year.

For the sake of a few Utd fans on here I hope we don't win on Sunday.

So you do think Liverpool can win the league after all.
I’m clutching to whatever straw I can get my hands on.

Part of me thinks a draw would be better. A win for United would certainly give you a boost and you’re not miles off the pace.

    Please explain.
Just look at the forum. Everybody had their minds made up but the goals came so late that theyre transferring their anger towards the Pogba / Matic / Jesse / Jose threads.
The enjoyment is gone. If we win on Sunday it'll be mostly the same. We won't outplay them so we'll need to work hard and sacrifice a bit of movement etc for defensive structure.
Score early and we'll be criticised for hanging on, score late and it'll be exactly like tonight.
Maybe Martial can score the winner then we'll be told how he's only playing well because he knows the dreaded Jose is off in the summer..

A Liverpool fan hoping United win a game of football makes me feel uncomfortable.

Now I'm not sure I want us to win at all, it's all very confusing.

Same 11 as tonight, just switch out Lingard for Mata.

Bring on Fellaini and Lingard when needed.

    2-1 (Martial, Smalling)

Hey, if people can't take enjoyment from a game like that, against arguably the best team in Europe, then that's their problem mate. The proper fans are 'avin it large!

Jose in, Jose out, it's irrelevant on a night like this.

City's off the ball movement is too good for our brain dead defenders. We got lucky the last time, can see us getting spanked if I'm being honest.

Nah. You're about to witness the City machine.
You think you're doing well, maybe win 6 in a row then earn a draw v a top 4 opponent followed by your 1 disappointing draw v a bottom side. You look at the table and you're somehow a few points worse off than you were before the run of form.
They dropped 14 points in the whole of last year!

Think we have enough threat up front to trouble them. Still not convinced with their defence so we just need to switch and transition defence to attack smartly. Obviously they will dominate possession and probably shots on goal. Think we may see an end to our comebacks in this game but I hope I'm wrong.

I think we'll start with this 11 but I wouldn't be surprised if Lingard or Rashford or both started over Sanchez and Mata, outside of Martial it's hard to pick the front 3.

I see us overloading midfield for this one. I can see us starting with Fellaini, Pogba, Herrera and Matic in the middle with Martial and Lingard playing as central two to play on the counter.

This game will be vital for the rest of the season. Get a draw or possibly some kind of miracle to get a win and it could give the squad the boost they need or get shat on and all the current confidence will be lost and we're back to square one.

Won’t be surprised if Jose went with the same starting XI.
Same, contrary to opinion i thought lingard got in between lines and was a good out ball when up against it. Did little with it unfortunately but lets hope that was match sharpness lacking

Not at all, our season is not going to be broken by a loss to City away from home. What is important is to play well and use that to to carry on improving.

Losing to this City team is normal and what is far more important is beating the teams that we should be beating.
