Mourinho is smart. He'll play a full strength team, and if all goes well, the second leg could well be a formality. That's especially important as the cup final (annoyingly) is just 4 days later.

Full strength team as this is our only way into the CL. Hope we win by a big margin and rest some players for the second leg.

We're 2 points outside the top 4, how is this our only chance for CL?

Same XI as today or possibly Carrick in for Mata. Will likely be a low scoring tie, so a 2-goal winning margin here would be crucial.

You'll see in 3 months time.
What's that supposed to mean? 2pts from 2nd place, unbeaten in the league since October, and the EL is the 'only' way into Champions League.

    Okay. Whatever you say.

Ibra against St. Etienne - 14 goals in 13 matches. Can we maybe see the big guy scoring his first hat-trick for Manchester United? I hope/believe so!

I was watching some of their highlights and they look like they get easily exposed at the back when teams run at them. I've also noticed that their players tend to have heavier first touches compared to what I'm used to seeing with our squad. If we hound them like we did Watford, especially Herrera, then we should easily dominate them. Where they excel is at the front. The players there look like they have great awareness of each other and can put away shots.

Two points from second place + our only way into the CL = pathetic!

Spurs are still in the competition - so might as well not try because no way will we get past them if we can't in the league.

Manchester United played the home leg of the 1977/78 Cup Winners' Cup clash at Plymouth Argyle's Home Park after crowd troubles in the first leg in France. The club was disqualified from the competition - only to be reinstated on appeal on condition that they played their home tie 200 km from Old Trafford - with United ultimately choosing to play in Plymouth.

This was the United team I started to support when I was a very young un. Makes me Laugh now when our current players are called average or crap. Some people have no perspective.

We should go all out to win this trophy.

    De Gea
    Valencia Bailly Rojo Darmian
    Herrera Fellaini Pogba
    Mata Zlatan Martial

    My starting 11.

Strongest team possible. We should be well rested and we can rotate for Blackburn, as the FA Cup at this moment should be at the back of our priorities.

Yes. Strongest team here, rest players against Blackburn and if we get a good result in the first leg, rest players in France too as Southampton will be without any game for 15 days. We need to be fresh for the final but at the same time do enough to go through against Saint Etienne.

not a lot of goals in this St Etienne side.....

3 nil is the scoreline that would mean we could fully rest for 2nd leg and that should be the aim

one of these games it going to come together for Zlatan and he will score 3 or 4 and I think this might be it

go for it here and, maybe I'm underestimating the French team but, take a few off for the game against Blackburn (Rashford some time at 9 please)

this team picks itself at the minute - in Shaw's absense I'd go full strength and play the side we did yesterday

They've conceded only 5 goals in 6 group games in the Europa and not lost a game. This won't be easy. I'm with others that winning the Europa still represents our best chance of CL but will be very difficult.

saying it's our best chance is one thing. it's a fair opinion and debatable. Saying it's our only chance as the other poster thinks is just a rediculous post

Hopefully Pogba's brother decides to score a few own goals just to help us out, that'd be swell.

Albeit against Anderlecht, Mainz and Gabala.

I'd be pretty disappointed if we didn't put at least two past them at Old Trafford.

Difficult side to play are StE. Could be a bit of a surprise in store.
On the other hand we could easily thump them. Depends which Verts side turns up I guess.

There might even be games where it's conceivable to play Fellaini ahead of Mkhitaryan, but never as #6, for Christ sake!

Yeah, and even when you do want to start Fellaini it'd make more sense to drop Mata. Fellaini as a 6 is not very good, he has strengths in other areas but definitely not as a 6.

Play full strength for this one. Rest Pogba, Zlatan, Mkhi, Valencia and Herrera against Blackburn.
Let's us hope he does that, we should be keeping our best team possible to gain momentum in our now beautiful play.

But I suspect he'll mix first team defenders with second team attackers, for instance, in all these coming games. And we might lose our regained style because of that, like in January.

Let's stay positive for now. Team is on a great run. Most players are fit and without fatigue. Even squad players have been up for it whenever they're called upon. Just need to be a bit more clinical.

We will know whether Mourinho takes the Europa League seriously by the lineup he chooses. Strongest team for this one.
Fact is no player requires resting in this game, that will happen against Blackburn unless Utd somehow manage the inconceivable and win 3-0/4-0 meaning players can be rested 2nd leg instead.
Anyway for the first time actually looking forward to a Europa League game for a change.

It's a pity Shaw seems out of the picture for now, unlike Martial, I suppose he hasn't convinced Mourinho in training, because he would be useful in these attacking home games. And Mourinho featured him twice alongside Valencia against City, so there doesn't seem to be the attacking/defensive full-back problem there.

Easy game against Lorient though. ASSE are 2-0 up at half-time.
They seem a slick and fast counter-attacking team, playing 4-2-3-1 like us, but a bit on the light side. They've also changed 5 players from the Nice away game, including the goalkeeper.

Ruffier is their first choice keeper anyway. Must have been injured for the match against the Gym. Obviously nothing any too serious though.
