Good point. The coaches are privy to details that the fans and media are not, and are in a better position to make these calls.

I don't want to trash DdG despite this prolonged dip in form, or pretend that Henderson doesn't make mistakes, because he does, I just think, in my humble opinion as a fan, that he should get most of the games for the rest of the season because
    1. We need to assess if Henderson is the future or if we need to sign someone else.
    2. If he is the future of the club he will need games to build confidence and experience. These are things he cannot get on the bench.
    3. His mistakes can be chalked up to inexperience, and you hope that he learns from it. With DdG it's just frustrating and a bit sad.
Hmmm... you are right and all three points are good and would/could make the decision easier.
A lott of guessing and sharing opinions is what we supporters do. :0)

Only concern I have is that if we decide to play Henderson as our nr1 next year we need to do everything possible to succeed with DdG's departure. He is on a very high salary and we don't want to pay him to leave. And we don't want him on the bench either. The relief of his salary would pay two new players salary.

Do you think not playing him would make it harder to do business in the summer?

I also think we need to let him go in "good terms" if we are to succeed in letting him go without paying him.

We will lose Romaro and Grant as well this summer, and even Pereira is likely to leave. "Losing" 4 keepers could be to much to handle.

Maybe we will have a big drama in our team next year with the upcoming youngster with big self-esteem, against the older one with a bit weaker mentality (I think).

We as in "me and admirers of his", not as in "Caf members". I love to be proven wrong, but I have the feeling they'll be ahead of us on the table this time next year.

Anyway, Brighton. They're shit, but they actually try to play football. Give them the ball and clap them on the counter. We've mostly struggled with the anti-football crowd, not these kind of teams.

    3-0 win.

    Hopefully they don't get relegated.
Chelsea fans said the same last season. It could happen if we don’t make any signings but our team is still considerably better on paper.

    Makes complete sense.
Agree. If there was ever a time to bring back DDG without many questions it was right after an international break that followed a period where DDG was off with his family. It could be that the coaches feel he is not fit and he will be back in a match or two but seems strange not to start him unless Ole has decided to go with Henderson from here on out.

Especially with top four still in question. Why put that pressure on DDG? I am a long time fan of his, but he doesn’t deserve to walk back into the PL starting lineup. Let him start Thursday & be the EL keeper. I am sure there is a part of him that wants to be in the net during an international cup run as he wasn’t in 2017.

Unless someone's carrying an injury and we want to keep them on the bench no reason to play 2 'DM's' today

Given I think DDG is better than Henderson and Dean needs a run to prove he's not our number 1 next season, I'd rather him start in the league and make errors there as we should be good for top 4, rather than make errors and get us knocked out of the Europa.

Great season? No injuries meant he's not been great. Even if I gave you that (which I don't), give me a forth out of 22 players?
I really don't understand that second sentence.

But yeah Rashford has been great this season. He's a wid eplayer with very strong numbers, if we had a half decent striker there would be much less pressure on him to score.

Depends if we think Pogba is ready to play a third game in one week. Our coaches may think that's pushing it a bit too much after being out for a month. I expect he will start but if he doesn't that'll be why.

Rashford's general performances have been quite poor for most of the season, but (unlike Martial and Greenwood) he's managed to still get a decent amount of goals and assists. That's a great attribute in itself, but his good numbers shouldn't blind us to how poor he's regularly been.

Yet another test of this team's bottle. Win this weekend really, really sets us up for Top 4, and easing a bit of the inevitable pressure of the run-in.

I'd take the ugliest 1-0 win, we just need it after the other results to take some pressure off ourselves.

Even providing for a West Ham win tomorrow, we can go 9 points above 5th with a win today, thus almost sealing top 4 before the really tough part of our EL campaign begins. Must win game.

    Henderson
    AWB Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    McT Pogba
    Greenwood Bruno Rashford
    Cavani

No more McFred, give us Pogba-McT and make this a real end to end game, because these guys don’t sit back. We generally do well in end to end games. Get AWB and Shaw to push up high, especially the latter considering his form and quality.

    3-1 United.

They can't be that decent considering they're only 6 points above the relegation zone. They are coming off the back of a couple of wins, albeit against Newcastle and Southampton who are both struggling for form at the moment.

We'll win comfortably if we turn up, which is never a guarantee with this team admittedly.
Well I have watched them quite a few times and they are a decent side. But like some others, they struggle to convert chances. Play good football though and we going to have to play really well to get a result.

Not sure how I completely forgot how the reverse fixture went. Hitting post/bar 4 times, equalizing in injury time only for us to get a penalty after the full time whistle was blown.

Hope it's a lot more routine win this time around.

That should be the tipping point for Henderson to start. DDG didn’t suffer an injury, he made a conscious choice to leave. DDG can start Thursday.

Doesn’t mean he should walk back right into the starting lineup in a key game after missing multiple matches. He shouldn’t lose his job, he should get benched for the absence.

    Lineup leaked insanely early.

Only thing I'm annoyed with is Fred. Still pissed off with him and just don't enjoy watching him play.

That said I understand our other options aren't much better

Exciting team if the leak is true.

Henderson getting the starting spot will be the main focus, let’s hope he can keep hold if the jersey now.

Why should he be benched over something he has permission from the manager to do. Especially when for such a life-altering experience.
Had he been completely out of form then maybe, but he played for his national team over the break.

Also, facing the team in 16th place is a key match?

Modern society doesn’t work that way, where people are benched or penalized for taking paternity or maternity leave.

I think that’s our strongest XI. Big fan of that team if true.

That's not how paternity leave works. You don't punish people for taking it.

He should start or be benched based on merit, nothing else.

Top four is still up for grabs.

He hasn’t played in multiple matches for the club, not sure if he played for Spain or not.

From a sporting perspective, why would you want to put pressure on someone who isn’t mentally match fit? Why take the chance, especially when the understudy hasn’t done much to sully himself? There was always going to be rotation during the last part of the season, he will most likely start Thursday. Hardly seems the punishment, just common sense.

Wouldn’t be surprised if such a scenario was discussed before he left. It’s a business, after all.

McTominay played 3 full games over the international period, so was never gonna start today with a full roster of midfielders now available. Plus Pogba-Matic hasn't really worked this season, leaving Fred by default as the only option.

Not knowledgeable the machinations of family law in England, but him not being as match fit either physically or mentally as his stand in who hasn’t done anything wrong to warrant the drop is the key here to me. All things equal, DDG should sit the match today & start Thursday.

He’s not been banished to the reserves or cut unceremoniously ffs, he should be dropped to the bench for this PL game.

That’s our strongest 11. Very happy with that team - let’s get the job done!

Word on Dean, well done Ole for picking someone based on merit and planning for the future.

If he's deemed not to be physically/mentally up to speed as a result of his absence then that's fine and part of picking team based on merit.

Your post seemed to suggest that the fact that he has been absent is in and of itself enough to see him get benched, even if it had no discernable impact on him mentally or physically. "Benched for the absence" rather than "benched because he's not ready yet".

Anywho, if he is benched it will likely be for more pressing reasons than him having missed a few games. If he was the clear #1 it certainly wouldn't happen.

While I don'tthink he's recaptured his form from the first half of last season I do think that his performances have been highlighted more because the other 2 thirds of our front 3 have usually been quite shite. If they were contributing anywhere close to him I don't think people would be criticising his overall performances as much. Plus like I said hes been playing with an injury for a while now.

No, not in & of itself. All things equal, then yes. But things are never all equal, so it’s almost moot to argue.

There’s no way to ascertain if any discernibly negative impact was felt from any absence until after a match is played. It’s educated guesswork, but, in this particular case, I didn’t see the wisdom of starting someone who has gone through an emotional whirlwind in a game that still has top four implications & a match that we in which often times struggle (match coming after rivals drop points, match against a motivated underdog), regardless the absence.
