Rashford made the run and hadn't crossed halfway when Mata got the ball but he arsed around so long Rashford had then run offside.
Hmm maybe. Mata is a highly skilled player and was getting his feet sorted so he could play that pass, Rashford needed to anticipate that. He loses his marbles a lot though whenever he doesn't get exactly pass he wants, what about all the times he makes poor decisions and doesn't pick a good pass himself. There are hundreds of these occasions.

It's because it's more of the same. Real lack of attacking creativity again and you cannot say the opposition were good tonight.
Is this the first time you are watching us against a side like this?
Its always the same when we play a poor side in the league cup/Fa cup/European group stage.

It'll be the same next week against Rochdale.

Its the first start for most in that XI. Almost no one was first choice.
Its always disjointed. Didnt expect anything else..

Kids get a game.. Its a step up from the reserves. It all helps. That's what these games are for. Dont expect anything else.

Would have liked it to have been more comfortable than it was.

Good to see the youngsters getting a start, but they could have done more with this opportunity.

Greenwood off the mark and 90 mins for Fred were the main positives tonight.

If we had taken one of the early chances it would have been very different
Rashford is very short of confidence and form.

He took around 5 touches that he didn't particularly need to and then got his head up and the chance was gone.

Rashford was on his bike before Mata got the ball and Mata really should have been aware but he didn't see him, fair enough. However, if Rashford checks the run the defenders are all over him.

He looked a bit frustrated but I'm not sure he's Sanchez at Arsenal just yet. This just seems like you're looking for reasons to be annoyed at Rashford tbh.

I know, I was. You were just telling me I was being ridiculous.
Look, Rashford got himself in a good position to score 3 times. He fluffed his lines, but he was there.

He took a couple of decent free kicks and some dribbles which didn't quite come off.

Greenwood did nothing all evening, except score is nicely taken goal.

Job done, points in the bag. What is there to complain about really? You have to be able to play shit but still win. I listened on mutv radio and it sounded like we were pretty average but we won.

Well exactly. A few players getting their senior debut and some experienced players getting their first start of the season. It's bound to be a bit disjointed but its a win, there were some good signs and they'll all be better for it.

I'm really not sure what people were expecting from tonight.

Greenwood was played on the right hand side in a team where all the good chances were coming down the left so yes he was not in it much. Rashfords job was to be in those positions though as he played as the 9. In the end though we were saved by a single piece of individual goal scoring.
Greenwood was very far from brilliant and touched the ball less than Rashford, he has a lot of improvement to go for sure but considering Rashford is our main man, 4 years older and a first teamer since 2015, I think we are in big trouble as he is not the required level in my opinion. His decision making being even worse than his finishing is a major worry and yes his free kicks were much better tonight which was a plus.

Hopefully Mason gets a chance as the main striker v Rochdale next week and Rashy has a rest. I think he will seize his chance if we give him sufficient minutes. I’m sure Ole does too.

Anyway this debate could go on for a while, I respect your views as I do my own but I think I’m going to call it quits tonight.

    On the positive side

    - United did create enough chances to score a handful, which has not always been the case playing against weaker sides.
    - The B-team totally dominated a game against - a somehow crap side - but still, a regular participant in European competitions.
    - Ole knows his best team, and his team selection so far this season has probable been spot on.

Terrible performance in what should be one of the easiest games of the season.

It wasn't easy? Their chance came from Jones being Jones and we created plenty just couldn't finish....Just because it wasn't 7-0 doesn't mean it wasn't a easy game.

I don't get it? it was far from a terrible performance, the kids and b string were so easily in control of the game it was like a preseason tour match, if the goals had come earlier then, with a different scoreline I think people would be waxing lyrical about youth....

Did anyone have a stand out game? probs not Fred was good, Tuanzebe looked quality, but then for the majority of the time it was 11 men behind the ball for them, and just like the first team we are lacking players who create chances in those situations.

Happy with that result. 9 changes - it wasn't pretty but the job got done against a well organised side.

Gomes showed flashes of brilliance, able to receive the ball and turn in tight spaces, something of which we've not had in a long time, still can't decide whether his height will be a hindrance or not to his game but could also be difficult to pick up for opposition players.

Chong needs to actually slow down and try to read the game a bit better, something that should hopefully come with time, but promising.

What needs to be said about Greenwood that hasn't been said already? There aren't even that many seasoned veterans able to slow the game down in their own head and put it between the keepers legs like he did, many would just hit and hope but he meant every bit of it. Played and nurtured correctly, he'll be a 20+ goals a season player in a couple years.

Tuanzebe did very well, caught out of position massively on one occasion but looks quick and strong, looks a very promising CB.

Apart from Rashford's finishing very happy with the result. Let's be Frank, if we put in a stronger team and trashed Astana half of the CAF would be complaining about the teams selection against such inferior opposition. This way we picked up three points fielding academy players, squad options and deadwood.
