    Know The Opposition

Manchester City Football Club (nicknamed City, The Citizens, and The Sky Blues), are a professional football club based in Manchester, England. City were founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton), before being renamed as Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887, and finally Manchester City in 1894 - and the origins can be traced back to members of St. Mark's Church of England, West Gorton — who founded the football club that would become known as Manchester City, for largely humanitarian purposes. Two church wardens sought to curb local gang violence and alcoholism by instituting new activities for local men, whilst high unemployment plagued East Manchester, specifically Gorton. All men were welcome to join, regardless of religion.

The team's first recorded match occurred on 13 November 1880, and City gained their first honors by winning the Second Division in 1899 — with it came promotion to the highest level in English football, the First Division. In the seasons following the FA Cup triumph of 1904, the club was dogged by allegations of financial irregularities, culminating in the suspension of seventeen players in 1904, including captain Billy Meredith, who subsequently moved across town to Manchester United. Almost half a century later later, a City team inspired by a tactical system known as the Revie Plan reached consecutive FA Cup finals again, in 1955 and 1956; just as in the 1930s, they lost the first one, to Newcastle United, and won the second. The club continued to challenge for honors throughout the 1970s, finishing one point behind the league champions on two occasions and reaching the final of the 1974 League Cup.

Prior to the takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, the club had enjoyed moderate levels of success through their history — however, since the start of the current decade, City have been buoyed by the signings of Sergio Agüero, Yaya Touré, David Silva, Vincent Kompany — and have emerged as perpetual title contenders Vincent Kompany winning the league 5 times in 9 years and repeatedly finishing in the Top 3. City play their homes games at the Etihad Stadium, and their biggest rivals are neighbors and opponents for the game, Manchester United.

I think we will win this. I don’t think City have been brilliant at all lately, and the result vs Chelsea was down to Chelsea being embarassingly bad.

Hopefully Dalot is ok for it.

    Dalot - Varane - Martinez - Shaw
    Casemiro - Eriksen
    Antony - Bruno - Rashford

Just realized I'll be in Manchester for this. Albeit Manchester Connecticut. It's written in the stars.

Delighted City play tomorrow and brilliant were in such good form for this.

Fantastic test for United, some might say our first big test?

Despite our run I cannot see anything but a City win. Us being at our best all over is needed but if City turn up, and when do ever really not, they will win comfortably 1-3.

I’m worried a thrashing will kill this momentum. I’d take a draw now tbh.

This is the big one. All of our momentum since the restart will be tested here. Draw is a minimum here, I'll be dejected if we lose. City aren't as good as before and we're in good form. Big performance needed from our midfielders here as I have no doubt EtH will try to go toe to toe with them at home.

Then you're going to be in for a shock. This city team is phenomenal, goals all over the park. If they turn it on, we won't be able to stop them.

The big one. Hoping for a win of course, a draw wouldn't be so bad. Anything can happen in football. Just hope we don't make it easy for them like last year old or make stupid mistakes, like a goalkeeper howler.

You're right on paper... but this season their third highest goalscorer in the league is De Bruyne, with 3 goals. Haaland scored almost exactly 50% of their league goals.

They used to have goals all over the park but this season the players not called Haaland have yet to really step up.

That's the thing isn't it? The previous City teams turned it on for every game. This season they haven't done so. They are still great but we've got a decent chance with the way we've been playing, especially our defense. We'll just have to wait and see.

The fact we have won 20 (D2 L5)from 27 games this season is showing how phenomenal EtH has done with the team. Just feel City are still on a whole new level and as much as I hate saying it, I honestly don’t see anything but a loss, the same when we inevitably meet them in Carabao cup.

I would happily take a draw right now.

Would love us to go toe to toe with them. Not even that fussed if we lose, just want a close game where we give it a go!

While we've been winning since the restart, I don't think we were that great last 2 (cup) games and though City aren't unebeatable this days, I do think it'll be very difficult to beat them so I'd be happy with a draw to be honest, as negative as that may sound to someone.

Hopefully Dalot will be fit and we can play our strongest 11. Need all the players to have big performance in order to get something.

Hoping ten Hag doesn't make the same mistake as last time by playing Eriksen in a pivot with Casemiro. Yes, it worked against Arsenal and Liverpool, but even in those two games, better finishing by the opposition could have resulted in a different scoreline.

In my opinion, we need to solidify the midfield and make sure we match the energy of City.

I actually think this game is more than winnable too, as I personally don't think City are anything special. We just need not to be as open as we were in the reverse fixture and one way of doing that, as mentioned before, is going with more energy in midfield. Therefore, the team I would play is:

    Rashford Martial Fernandes
    Fred Casemiro Eriksen
    Shaw Martinez Varane Dalot*
    De Gea

Wan Bissaka if Dalot is injured.

The team picks itself if Dalot is ok. We can definitely beat them, my only concern is how we’ll handle Haaland, he gave Martinez the runaround the last time out

Yeah, that would be my team, too - Bruno might not be amazing on the right but we have no one there who is in particularly great form anyway. And we shouldn't ask Casemiro to be a one-man midfield, even if he might actually pull it off.

It will be interesting to see how ETH set up his midfield with Bruno and Eriksen very likely to get overrun

This must be the most positive we've gone into a Manchester Derby for years and years.

So we'll probably lose, but feck it, whatever happens I'm sure we'll compete.

That didn't happen though. He played in a pivot with McTominay and that's a different thing altogether.

Part of why I'm so excited about this game is because of Casemiro playing to be honest. In the 6-3, they scored once when Varane was off the pitch and twice when he was on it but injured and not moving right, iirc.

If he stays fit this time, him, Casemiro and Varane is a great base.

One of these won't start IMO, I think Fred will start with Casemiro, he's had some top games against them in the past and we need his energy

The big one. I can see us leaving Antony out and putting Fred in midfield for legs with Bruno wide, but then again.. EtH could see Antony as a key counter piece, plus with his work rate being important. I would probably be more comfortable with Fred in for Eriksen, and hoping Fred has a good day on the ball (because we know off the ball what he can do). Hopefully Dalot is fit. Really need to be full strength. Old Trafford to... Getting a win would be massive.
