Middlesbrough Football Club (nicknamed The Boro) is a professional football club in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England, which competes in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football. Middlesbrough was formed in 1876 by members of the Middlesbrough Cricket Club wishing to stay fit during the winter. The club retained its amateur status until 1889 when several members of Middlesbrough FC split to form Middlesbrough Ironopolis over a dispute. Both teams made their debuts as professional teams within a week of each other in December 1889. After three years it was clear that both clubs were becoming more successful and club officials knew that only an amalgamation would give them a serious chance of a place in the Football League.

On 7 May 1892 an application was made to the Football League under the name of Middlesbrough and Ironopolis Football and Athletic Club. The application failed and both clubs went their separate ways once more, as Middlesbrough FC reverted to their amateur status. They won the FA Amateur Cup in 1895 and again in 1898. The following year, 1899, Middlesbrough turned professional again in an attempt to gain entry to the Football League, and on 18 May 1899, backed by local neighbours Newcastle United and Sunderland, they were admitted to the Second Division.

In the modern era, Middlesbrough were one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992 and became one of the first clubs to be relegated from it following the 1992–93 season. The club's achievements include winning the League Cup in 2004, their first and to date only major trophy, and they also reached the 2006 UEFA Cup Final, losing to Spanish club Sevilla. Their highest league finish to date was third place in the top flight in the 1913–14 season and the club have only spent two seasons outside the top two divisions of English football. The League Cup win and the UEFA Cup run was part of an 11-year consecutive stay in the Premier League. Middlesbrough' main rivals are Sunderland (with whom they contest the Tees–Wear derby), Newcastle United (with whom they contest the Tyne–Tees derby), and Leeds United. They play their home games at Riverside Stadium.

I want to go all out to win the FA Cup this season. Best chance at silverware. Thought we played very well against West Ham, just missing a bit in creativity, which was partly down to Elanga and Greenwood's lack of movement and overlapping. Nice chance for Sancho to come back in imo. Assuming Lingard and Martial will be sold/loaned by then.

    Predicted XI:

    De Gea

    Dalot Varane Maguire Shaw

    Fred McTominay Bruno

    Sancho Ronaldo Rashford

    Bench:
Heaton, Lindelof, Telles, Matic, Elanga, Greenwood, Cavani

Man Utd 3-0 Middlesbrough (Ronaldo, Rashford, Sancho)

4-0 to United. Martial with a hattrick. 90 minutes for Van De Beek. Pogba off the bench.

Will be interesting to see where Pogba will play if he does feature. I'm still convinced he would be a perfect fit for that left wing, but I bet he'll play in the middle

Would imagine there will be some changes. Would like to see Amad if he isn’t loaned by then.

    De Gea
    Dalot - Lindelof - Maguire - Shaw
    Donny - Matic - Pogba
    Amad - Greenwood - Elanga

Will Pogz be on the bench for extra spiciness if need be?

Remember the game in Italy where he came back from injury

They're going to get battered. Ralf will not go with an easy team. He definitely will not risk killing momentum after an international break

It isn’t an international break it’s a winter break. I’d love if there was internationals but no footy at all :(

same team as yesterday but no Ronaldo starting as I want to protect him from the unfair criticism and frustration because his teammates like selfish and greedy Greenwood refuse to pass to him when he's the better option for easy tap-ins and we don't play to his strengths (you need creative wide forwards like Sancho to get the best out of Ronaldo) and the tactical things Rangnick is asking him to do (drop too deep, link up the play etc) is not one of his strengths and never has been. Cavani is better at it so start Cavani and face the consequences if it goes wrong with no Ronaldo to scapegoat or to blame as the problem.

so yes I now agree with most of you (though from different angles that I don't blame Ronaldo) because I don't see things changing.. Drop Ronaldo, give him cameo substitute bench appearances and let him leave the club mutually at the end of the season where he can then join a club like Sporting Lisbon or MLS club (or another club in a different league) who will play to his strengths and then he can enjoy the last few years of his career before retirement. Everyone's happy then.. including probably Ronaldo himself, his backstabbing teammates who leaked the Athletic article and the bullying British media. Who if this was Harry Kane or a British player dropping so deep and not scoring they'd blame Rangnick and his tactics for not playing to his strengths to get the best out of the World Class player he has. Double standards and hypocrites.

Sir Alex Ferguson when we purchased Van Persie told the players to pass to him. Nobody behind the scenes at Manchester United is pulling Greenwood aside and telling him to pass to Ronaldo obviously.

In the 90th minute at home in one of the biggest games of the season when you are desperately needing a goal and the best goal-scorer in history isn't in the box there's something wrong.

he was scoring loads for Ole and Carrick (against Arsenal on the day Rangnick joined!) yet has only scored a penalty against Norwich away and Burnley at home which came back off the crossbar. No assists for any of goals from his teammates since Rangnick joined. So in my eyes it must be tactical from Rangnick.. there's no other way to explain why Ronaldo's goal output has dropped off a cliff.

But Sky, Gary Neville etc won't give a fancy tactical breakdown and analysis as they are too busy pushing the agendas that Ronaldo is the problem etc yet like I said if it was Harry Kane or a British player Rangnick and his tactics would get the blame.

Apologies if it's been mentioned but is there any reason for such a long break between West Ham and Boro? Can't see any internationals on

Winter break for European players. Internationals for South/North American (WC qualifiers) and African players (Afcon).

I think it's more of a winter break but there are some internationals in South America, quite sure Fred, telles and Cavani are playing. The rest of the players get some time off.

Break is good. Rest for everyone - players and fans alike.

As for the game - go all in. Same XI as yesterday, but Shaw for Telles and Sancho for Greenwood.

    Utd 4 : 0 Boro

Don't think RR will be seeing this as a rest period, I'd imagine him seeing this as perfect time to work on the training pitch to get us into that top four and stay there.

    Van de Beek Pogba
    Sancho Cavani Elanga

Would like to see something like this - maybe Henderson to start if he's still here? I think Rashford deserves a start, but I'd go with Elanga again here then Rashford in for the Premier League game.

Subs: Probably McTominay, Rashford and Greenwood/Martial for Pogba, Sancho and Cavani. Maybe get a youngster on instead if we have a comfortable lead.

He has given the squad 6 days off now.
No need for a camp abroad or training for so long at Carrington he said.
So 6 days off, then almost a weeks training for the group again before the match vs Boro. Sounds good in my opinion. Recharge and then focus.

Fred, Cavani and Telles will be out for this one considering they'll be playing in South America 48 hours earlier. Pogba, Rashford and Shaw are not exactly bad replacements.
