Oh dear God, we might genuinely get knocked out by this lot. Should be a fun night on the caf at least.

If you lose because of a very inexperienced backline, what can you do? It was only a matter of time before Smalling was out. We are running out of players. There will need to be a big assessment in the summer of who is actually injury prone. It should be the manager not stocking the squad fully that takes the blame. I am more worried that we will get hammered on Sunday than today.

United squad: Romero, Joel Pereira, Love, Varela, Poole, Rojo, Blind, McNair, Riley, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Carrick, Lingard, Mata, Andreas Pereira, Memphis, Martial, Rashford
wow. To put this into perspective... i'd say only 10 of those are part of the senior squad.

It's absolutely terrifying. People want to see the kids, but not this many and only the best ones. A couple of bad results and it could wreck these kids confidence. You bring kids gradually into a winning side, not chuck them in willy nilly and hope for the best.

Can't be helped given the amount of injuries we have but we really are down to the bare bones.

    Updated after squad announcement:

    Romero
    Varela Carrick McNair Blind
    Schneiderlin Herrera
    Lingard Mata Memphis
    Martial
    ---
J.Pereira; Love, Poole, Rojo; Riley, A.Pereira; Rashford

Seems the most likely. Surprised to see no CBJ or Smalling.. If the first 11 can't do it, then we're probably going out. Rojo will likely replace McNair at some point, but odds are it's like for like and doesn't change much offensively.

LvG may actually try the back three again at this rate, maybe something like:

    Romero
    McNair Carrick Blind
    Lingard Herrera Schneiderlin Memphis
    Mata Pereira
    Martial

Hopefully we finish the season without any further embarrassments (as unlikely as it is) and then get rid of Van Gaal and all the unreliable, injury prone players like Jones.

What's wrong with Smalling? It's odd that there was nothing about him being injured and Lingard was, yet Lingard is in the squad.

    Could be something like this:
    Romero
    McNair - Carrick - Blind
    Varela - Herrera - Morgan - Lingard
    Mata
    Martial - Memphis
Carrick to step up in midfield when in possession

Regardless of inexperience, we should not be losing to some random danish FC. Our u21s should be able to hold their own against them.

I'm trying to be positive about this match and thinking that even if the worst happens and that we go out, that it must mean the end for Van Gaal.

I like the phrase "willy nilly", it should be used whenever possible. However this isn't such an occasion. Unprecedented injuries focused on one area have caused this. Nothing anybody could have done.

Why are we getting these injuries? Maybe Jose would change our luck.

 You can name Midtjylland inferior, small, tiny, lacking history, new kids on the block, whatever. But if you call them random, it seems you haven't followed football for a while. With their strict analytics approach they are actually the quite opposite: Unique, and that reaches far beyond the Danish league.

Good luck to United tonight, you seem to have been cursed with injuries and might need it. :)

    Think :

    ----------Romero-----------
    Love--McNair--Blind--Varela
    -----Carrick--Morgan--------
    Lindgard---Mata---Memphis
    ----------Martial------------

    but would rather see :

    ----------Romero------------
    Love--Carrick--Blind--Varela
    ----------Morgan------------
    ----Herrera-----Pereira------
    Lindgard------------Memphis
    ----------Martial-------------

Unlikely. He rotates even less than Van Gaal which is saying something. He'll get a surprise after being at Chelsea where injuries were scarce.

Yeah, defensively we're missing the following:

    CB
    Smalling
    Jones
    Rojo

    RB
    Darmian
    Valencia

    LB
    Shaw
    Young
    Borthwick-Jackson

Any Prem team missing 8 players in one area would be at the bare bones there.

We're Manchester United - regardless of who the manager is, we'll always get a fecking ridiculous injury list every single damn season, and almost always focused on the same position or area of the squad. We're just cursed, we have to accept it and plan accordingly.

We need to approach every transfer window from now on as a challenge to sign as many defenders as we can in a single window, and then try to break that record in the next window when all the previous window's signings are out injured. Even so, we'll likely see Carrick playing centre-back at some stage during the season alongside a kid from the under-16s.

Don't think the training is as intensive, so that might be why they don't pick as many injuries. We seem to get mysterious injuries during training sesssions at times.

You'd hope an injury list like this would be unprecedented, but it has been the theme regardless of manager, methods and staff the last few years.

Something is obviously wrong but three regimes haven't been able to fix it. Cursed indeed.

Yep, compare this to say, Man City. It means they'd be without: Sagna, Zabaleta, Kompany, Mangala, Demichelis, Clichy, and Kolarov (along with one youth player also injured). I'd compare Otamendi to Blind as their/our only fit player who'd be starting regardless of who else was fit. I can't even name who City would have next in line, but they'd be fecked for sure as well.

Something does need to be done about this though, it seems like we've probably had the most total injuries every season in the Premier League for the last 10 years or so.

Our injury problems go as far back as under Sir Alex. We famously had a defensive injury crisis around every Christmas.

We need to do something about it but no idea what. We brought in the Southampton physio Matt Radcliffe but sacked him after a season when things weren't getting better.
