Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies) is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue — leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park — which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

This will be savaged, but Weghorst might be required not least for defensive set pieces and an out ball against a very hard working team. I'd play him in the #10 though and Rashford through the middle.

Weghorst seems to offer more as a #10 but now Antony is back (and scored this winner) so you'd expect him to go to RW, Bruno on his position and Rashford as striker. Sancho to start and Garnacho as an impact sub if needed.

But it's crucial now to find out if Casemiro and Rashford are ok. Newcastle will have Bruno Guimaraes back for this game and witht out Casemiro they'd have significant advantage in the middle.

I hope Rashford and Casemiro’s ankle knocks are ok.

Can see this being a very scrappy edgy game. Newcastle will be more than happy to take it to ET knowing we’ve played so many more games. If we can win this it will cap off an incredible start for ten Hag. Going to be very nervous.

Presume no chance Martial has outside chance of making bench as not team training

Newcastle will play for extra time from the off and will waste as much time as they can. I expect us to go right at them.

Yeah should get a better idea when Erik speaks to media nearer the game, presume he is doing some kind of presser or am I mistaken
He’s obviously took a knock. If it was serious he wouldn’t be walking on it I don’t think and it would be iced up.

On the plus side Martial should be fit so even Rashford on the bench would be a bonus.

Would think scousers away is more realistic for Martial as not training with team yet

Long since our last final. Would be over the moon if we win it.

Although we have 2 more cups to win so even if we lose it is not the end at least and it feels like we will be a top 3 side next season too with good chances to win things.

Feels so good to be in all cups just wished it was CL over Europe, but the plus side I am slightly less anxious and nervous for EL.

Newcastle are really good, but we are surely fairly big favorites.

It calms the nerves for me in the sense that EL is the biggest we can win and we did beat the team with best results in the top 5 leagues and one of Europes biggest club.

Obviously we have a long way to go in EL and losing a final hurt so much, but I think we are strong enough to comeback from it

Nervous for this being favourites. Hopefully Newcastle shit the bed with it being their first final in 20 odd years. But I imagine they’ll be right up for it

Same team that started the second half. Maybe with the exception of Dalot starting to break their annoying low block off the ball. Wout shouldn't be starting this.

A bit harsh but I also might be tempted to start Sabitzer, just so he keeps peppering Karius' goal

Quite the relief we didn't need to rely on Rashford again tonight. But he has to play against Newcastle. We need to start strong and get a couple of goals to take the sting out of the game early.

I could see us losing this one if only because we just went all out tonight and have to turn around in less than 72 hours against a shithousing energetic team on a full weeks rest.

If we win I'd assume it will be a scrap fest. Sabitzer has to start, hopefully he and Case can dictate the game some. If we have to start Weghorst because Rashford is out I might throw up
