Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies) is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue — leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park — which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

I’ve been on the Villa thread saying about how performances are just as important at our current stage of rebuilding, but nonetheless, we really could do with a result here…even if we stink it out and shithouse a 2-1.

It's home against a good side, and despite the absences, we need to get results at home especially. Would probably go something like this, where Mount is shift a bit more to the right and Cunha is a bit more to the left.

    Lammens
    Dalot Yoro Heaven Shaw
    Mount Casemiro Martinez
    Cunha
    Sesko Zirkzee

Midfield will decide this game. No Mainoo or Bruno is going to be an issue. Actually like Martinez as the holding player v Villa, but not a chance he can play 90 minutes there.
    Going for a 2-2 draw…

    Lammens
    Dalot Yoro Heaven Shaw Dorgu
    Ugarte Casemiro
    Mount Sesko Cunha

    Squad depth is really suffering.

Newcastle are all over the place this season, but they raise their game for big clubs. We won't be able to live with their intensity, and even more so with the current injuries.

I don’t think of Newcastle as being a great club or anything special, however, considering the present Utd team I can’t see anything but a turning over by the Geordies. When will this “manager” of ours just give it up or walk away.

Christ… not even sure who I’d want to play at this point.

    Lammens
    Dalot - Heaven - Shaw - Dorgu
    Mount - Casemiro - Martinez - Cunha
    Sesko - Zirkzee

We match up very poorly against them, they have lots of pace and physicality and even though they are not great I think this will be another defeat.

3-1 loss again. People will say it's AFCON and not managers fault. We have become an average mentality club.

Under this manager I feel like we'll win one in three or one in four home games like his record has shown so far. Don't look like scoring many and are incapable of clean sheets

We just need to hope our finishing is good on the day. We don't keep clean sheets so rely on strong attacking performances.

This'll be the kickoff to our rapid descent down the table. We don't have the tools to cope with missing so many key players.

Assuming he's still gonna go down with the ship as far as 3-4-3 goes, I'd do this:

    .........................Sesko.............................
    .................................................................
    ..............Cunha..........Zirkzee..................
    .................................................................
    Dorgu.........Case......Mount............Dalot
    ..................................................................
    ..........Shaw.......Licha.........Yoro..............
    ..................................................................
    .......................Lammens..........................

Newcastle have no business losing this at the moment.

That Bruno injury amongst everything else we have going on with the squad has significantly swung the outcome in Newcastle’s favour. They will be licking their lips despite a very average away record this season.

    1-2 Newcastle

Dreading this honestly. We tend to play shite at St James and we don’t have enough firepower right now to win a game of moments. I’d be shocked if we get 3 points.

    It's at home.

Newcastle's away form is as bad as ours is. This is a must win, dropping points would be shameful.

    2-1 to the reds!

Not sure thats correct. We miss a another quality player but we'll be also way harder to predict.

Don't know if we have the type of squad to cope with their midfield, and that was a concern even before recent injuries.

Can't see us doing well here, will be lucky to get a point.

    Lammens
    Yoro Heaven Shaw
    Dalot Martinez Casemiro Dorgu
    Mount Sesko Cunha
Only arguments are Zirkzee/Ugarte starting but I'd go with this

What we are currently doing isn't working clearly so I'd love for him to mix it up (Not that he will) but I'd go with

    Lammens
    Martinez Heaven Shaw
    Lacey Mount Casemiro Dorgu
    Zirkzee Cunha
    Sesko

I know it's a big ask for Lacey to start but I think you can see his confidence and he plays very similarly to Amad with his left foot and dribbling ability, Yoro and Dalot have to be dropped after their performance, not as a punishment but to show that we expect better and those beneath them that they will get rewarded.

I fancy us for this, im weirdly starting to feel a bit more positive, i thought we'd get run ragged at Villa and our midfield wouldnt be able to cope but we were the better side and im pleased to see us actually putting in some decent performances. Im also starting to become a little more positive towards Ruben, having been calling for him to get potted since Grimsby.

Cunha is looking a class act, i think it'll click for Sesko soon, Mount is solid and Licha was brilliant in CM. Bruno is a huge loss, no doubt about it and our defence, particularly Leny is looking very shaky and could do with a break from the starting 11 but other than that there's a few things to be positive about i think.

Could all change after Newcastle though, if we put in a crap performance and get beat comfortably i'll be back to where i was

Presume we will play the same team but with Casemiro in for Bruno.

Do we have any idea when either Maguire or MDL will be back? The impression was that they had relatively minor injuries but they seem to have both been out for weeks.

1 win and 5 losses against Newcastle since beating them in the league cup final. Expecting us to get bullied again.

Was more confident of a result against Villa than these. Casemiro will have to be on top form if we’re to do well.

Nah. Villa are a better side than Newcastle and they were at home while we were missing Casemiro who is pretty key for any midfield balance. Bruno now being gone is probably an even bigger hit though, but being at home, I definitely expect something out of the game.

We will lose this game but it won't matter as we will beat Wolves the game after. Newcastle's midfield always rips through us.

    Lammens
    Yoro Heaven Shaw
    Dalot Martinez Casemiro Dorgu
    Mount Sesko Cunha

How doesn’t it matter? You mean in terms of the safety of Amorim’s position?
