I was raging. Knew we'd bottle it with Schmeichel out.
We were on fire that season 7 v 1 away to Wednesday 4 v 1 away to spurs but beating that United side with Cantona, kanchelskis, Giggs and Keane was something special.

Dalot injured with Varane and Martinez still resting after the World Cup. Can see us conceding here and a draw is not unlikely. Why exactly does Varane need rest when Mbappé was back in training after 2 or 3 days?
Different players, different recovery times. Lloris ain’t starting for Spurs today for example. I think Mbappe just rushed back, I don’t think we would allow Varane to rush back

Varane went into the tournament recovering from an injury and ended it playing the final with illness. He’ll be back very soon.

Given the schedule of games (and opposition) in the first half of season, we really ought to gaining some points on the teams above us but these are precisely to sort of games we have contrived to drop points in!

Lack of goal scorers is a real concern for me as we don't create the sort of tap-in chances City create so most of our games are won by margins of solitary goal...hope I'm proven wrong!

If we don't beat them at Old Trafford then we don't deserve CL football.
    They've conceded 30 goals in 15 games.

Not quite as simple as that. If you take out the drubbing we got at Highbury, we’ve conceded 4 goals since 10 October. Since we switched to a 433 formation we’re pretty solid at the back.

It sounds impressive until you realise we took 7 odd weeks off for the wild cup!

Anything less than a win would be a disaster. Spurs dropping points two wins and United in the top four. There's no excuse even with Martinez / Varane out Maguire and Victor should comfortably step in.

Point is that teams like Forest should be getting beaten by teams with CL hopes.

Missing a few defensive players is no excuse when you are United and you play a newly promoted team who sits bottom of the table at home. I know it is not as simple as that and haven’t been for years, but it is about time we start scoring 3-4 goals against teams like this at home and worry less about if they should get a goal.

Well the league system is pretty implicit from that point of view! The current top 3 played us off the park, but we’ve recently beaten Spurs and Liverpool. Granted the top 3 were away for us and the latter at home. It’s more a case of, if Utd have any hope of CL football, you have to win your home games against the bottom teams, whereas this game won’t define our season and anything we get out of this is a bonus.

You'd expect a defence without Dalot, Varane and Martinez to be shaky so to get 3 points is most important, performance not as much.

Ha - the wild cup - The WC with David Attenborough commentating? As for goals conceded - minus Arsenal - 0.66 goals per game - United, over the same period 0.86 goals per game.

I want to see a huge performance from Antony as he’s stagnated in the last few matches

United will struggle to score, highlighting the need for a striker

I suppose this is the most likely lineup?

We need Rashford back on the left because that is where he is by far the most dangerous and the most productive. He was virtually unplayable in that position last time he was on form. Let Garnacho back him up there while Antony plays on the right.

On a coach from London for the game. First game my son and I will be watching together at Old Trafford! We are both so excited. Hope we score a few today.

Can see Bruno, back on pens, and with no Ronaldo that he's contractually obligated to pass to play himself into some fine form over the next couple of months. Especially given how good he looked at the World Cup.

I think Varane will be on the bench and back in the starting XI for the slightly more difficult Wolves game on New Years Eve. Hopefully alongside Martinez (unsure if he’s back or still partying in Argentina)? I hope Dalot is back for that game too but obviously need to see with his injury. I’d like Casemiro back in his natural CDM position alongside Eriksen. Try and get the game won early doors so we can take Bruno, Rashford & Martial off (wishful thinking I know as we never make things that simple). We are so limited in our options up front. Makes signing an attacker in this winter window a huge priority even if it’s just a loan till the end of the season.

    DDG

    AWB - Lindelof - Maguire - Shaw

    Casemiro - Eriksen

    Antony - B.Fernandes - Rashford

    Martial

Subs: Heaton, Varane, Malacia, McTominay, Fred, VDB, Pellistri, Garnacho, Elanga

Score Prediction: Manchester United 4-1 Nottingham Forest

Just for once a comfortable 3-0. Martial and/or Rashford contributing 2 and another from somewhere, maybe Casemiro.

It depends who we play at Right CB - if it’s Worrall and ETH has done his homework then target him with a quick LW and you will get free kicks all day because he tends to get too tight on his man and done for pace. Last season Djed Spence bailed him out with his pace. That being said, I have no idea who we’ll play at CB Worrall and Boly or Cook and McKenna.

Thank you! My son has brought 2 shirts and plans to buy a Martinez one when there - hoping to get one signed! Let’s see. Hope for a solid win lads.
Bring him on the protest march for a truly memorable one so he can tell his future kids he helped save the club!

I’ve been lazy all morning delaying which train to get but heading up on a stupid bank holiday 4 hour twice as long as normal train journey now.

Oh well! Return of the league, more than worth it! LFG United!

Ha ha! I’ll see what he says :D Good luck on your way- we abandoned our train plans due to all the strikes etc didn’t want to risk it. On another note, weather was so nice in London but we soon as left the Milton Keynes stop - started clouding over and raining! Can’t complain much as it was -20 in Toronto when we were flying to London!
