He is clearly a creative player, and in my book a better option right now than Di Maria, Falcao, or RvP, (ie one striker.)
Clearly on reputation, but imo he hasnt been creative this season one bit. Do think he deserves a new chancd but an assist once every 5 matches or creating less than 2 chances per match (most probably not clear cut) isnt creative imo. Ozil, Cazorla, de Bruyne are creative, Mata is more of a 2nd striker with outstanding end product but little influence in play. Very often could he give a weighted through ball, in stead he choses for the simple option frequently while he was the most creative player with Silva 2 years ago.

Sunderland defend nice and compact, and are hard to break down, at times. I think, as with other teams that play narrow, we need to play with width, in order to try and stretch them.

With Van Persie possibly out, Van Gaal should go with something similar we played against Preston in the second half, with one forward.

    I would play:

    De Gea
    Valencia - Smalling - Jones - Shaw
    Fellaini - Blind
Di Maria - Mata - Young
    Rooney

    Valdes - Rojo - Rafael - Herrera - Januzaj - Wilson - Falcao

What I would like (realistically speaking):

    De Gea
    Valencia - Smalling - Rojo - Shaw

Fellaini - Blind - Di Maria

    Wilson - Rooney - Young
    What I expect:

    De Gea
    Valencia - Jones - Rojo - Shaw
    Blind
    Fellaini - Di Maria
    Mata
    Falcao - Rooney

City to beat or draw against Liverpool, almost a banker unless the ref has a bad day at the office.

Should be back to 5 points. Having just seen Newcastle and the fact they tend to go hell for leather at SJP I would suggest we will win there as well. So 5 points ahead going into Scouse game.

Then the fun begins. Liverpool will feel they have to beat us, as they will not want to be 8 points behind. So, if we keep our shape, I fancy disappointing them, even if it means a draw. Could be nail in coffin for the Liverpool as far as 4th is concerned.
    Lottery numbers for tomorrow?

With the poor RVP out it will be interesting to see if Falcao gets the nod- if he doesn't and Mata comes in or even Wilson, it is the nail in the coffin for the Colombian.
Personally I still believe in him- he has missed a few chances and his confidence and touch look shot but if we improve in terms Of creativity he will score goals and get confidence back we could have a 30 goal a season striker. But we need pace in and around him

If Carrick is back I would go for....

    --------------------De Gea-------------------
    Valencia--------Smalling-Rojo----------shaw
    ---------------Carrick-----Blind--------------
    -----Di Maria------Herrera--------Young----
    --------------------Rooney--------------------

I think that is our best option right now.

Why anyone would place Valencia as a winger is beyond me... If he's not a full back, he should be nowhere near the pitch.
I wouldn't be adverse to him playing as a winger if Rafael was playing RB behind him. Those 2 have a good understanding and its been too long since we posed a threat down the right hand side.

This - Valencia in for Rafael, as he's disappeared

We need a team with goals in it, so i would go with this although it's a bit unbalanced defensively, but we are fecking Man Utd known for going all out.

Would like to have Di Maria in CM, but he is our best winger at the moment and i want pace out wide.

Goodluck with no creativity bar Herrera.
Dude we're playing Sunderland at Old Trafford. Not Real Madrid.
We always win our home games - bar a freak goal, so I'm not worried at all about this game.
I think we will score 3 goals because thats what we do at Old Trafford and I doubt Sunderland will score 3 or more.
Our issues relate to our away performances where we are inexplicably weak.

We've all seen how creative he's supposed to be, all those passes backwards and simple passes, he's a good goalscorer but since Mourinho he hasnt been very creative. In his stats too you can see that he doesnt create many chances and doesnt have many assists.
Per 90 minutes only Di Maria creates more chances than Mata in our team according to squawka.com

That doesnt mean you can put up every line up against them and still expect us to win, if you have valencia and young on the wing, you'll struggle.

Surprised Herrera isnt above him, maybe because he plays deeper. But othen than that, that's hardly a surprise, we have close to no creativity in the squad. Compare Mata to the likes of Fabregas, Silva, Santi.
Yes he is behind that lot, but he isn't in the team as consistently as any of them, and also has had to play out of position sometimes too (he has played deep in midfield etc).

Its a moot point though, we're talking about the best team we can put out and he is the second most creative player in our squad.

EDIT: Everyones forgotten how he tore Spurs a new one, hes still got it in there to be a top player.

One of the few matches this season where he did what I think we all expect from him, but he's had far more matches where he was invisible and just didnt effect our play a bit.

He wasn't bad vs Southampton bar his finishing either.
Anyway just in terms of productivity I think him being in the team in place of one of the strikers is a good idea. Id rather Mata play than either of RVP/Falcao

Lets do a 4-3-3 with creative midfielders for once. I'm tempted to play Di Maria on the right but I'd think with Valencia playing right back its better to have Young's tracking back on that flank.

    Valencia Jones Rojo Shaw

I'd like another look at Falcao for my sins - give Rafael a chance to build some form or he's off in the summer - Januzaj or Young on the left and Di Maria needs to start to produce or he should be benched - Mata or Rooney at 10

Just don't get this Adnan the saviour bit. Young is far more effective this season and would be a better option. Seems to have the bit between his teeth.

Sunderland, at home. Pick our best pass and move team, outplay them, tire them out and make their slow as hell CB's move around:

    --------Rooney-------
    DiMaria--Mata---WTW*
    ----Blind-Herrera
    Shaw------------Rafael
    ----Rojo---Smalling---
    --------De Gea--------

WTW = Whoever trains well, though realistically it's between Januzaj, Wilson, Young, Valencia. If Falcao trains the best stick him up front then play Di Maria on the right and stick Rooney on the left and tell him to score and not worry about fecking Bardsley or whoever the Sunderland RB is overlapping.

That's not a bad team I would stick Valencia in for Rafael and Young in the right wing and Rooney for Mata and slot Falcao up top himself.
