Know The Opposition
Sunderland Association Football Club is a professional football club based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. The club was founded as Sunderland & District Teachers Association Football Club by schoolmaster James Allan in what has commonly been believed to be October 1879. They played several years in the FA Cup and local cup competitions before joining the Football League in the 1890–91 season in place of Stoke.
Tom Watson became Sunderland's first manager when he was appointed in 1888. During the late 19th century, they were declared the "Team of All Talents" by William McGregor, the founder of the league. Sunderland won the league championship in the 1891–92 season, one season after joining The Football League. Sunderland successfully defended the title the following season. In the process, they became the first team to score 100 goals in a season, a feat not matched until 1919–20. They played in the top league in England until the 1957–58, season when they were relegated into the Second Division.
Sunderland are English top-flight's sixth most successful club of all time, The club has won six titles in the First Division, and finished runners-up five times. The club has also won the FA Cup twice. Traditionally, Sunderland's two main rivals have been Newcastle United and Middlesbrough, against whom the Tyne–Wear derby and Tees–Wear derby are competed for respectively. They play their home games at the Stadium of Light.
