Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, commonly referred to simply as Tottenham or Spurs (and nicknamed The Lilywhites), are a professional football club based in Tottenham, London. The Hotspur Football Club was formed in 1882 by a group of school boys, mostly aged 13 to 14, from Tottenham Grammar School and Saint John's Middle Class School who were members of the Hotspur Cricket Club formed two years earlier. Initially, the boys that formed Hotspur Football Club played games between themselves and friendly matches against other local clubs. The team entered their first cup competition in the London Association Cup, and won their first competitive match on 17 October 1885. The club turned professional on 20 December 1895, and in the summer of 1896 they were admitted to the Division One of the Southern League. On 2 March 1898, the club also became a limited company, the Tottenham Hotspur Football and Athletic Company.

Tottenham were the first club in the 20th century to achieve the League and FA Cup Double, winning both competitions in the 1960-61 season. After successfully defending the FA Cup in 1962, in 1963 they became the first British club to win a UEFA club competition – the European Cup Winners' Cup. In 1967, Spurs won the FA Cup for a third time in the 1960s. In the 1970s Tottenham won the League Cup on two occasions and were the inaugural winner of the UEFA Cup in 1972, becoming the first British club to win two different major European trophies. In the 1980s Spurs won several trophies: the FA Cup twice, FA Community Shield and the UEFA Cup in 1984. In the 1990s the club won the FA Cup and the League Cup. When they won the League Cup once more in 2008, it meant that they had won a major trophy in each of the last six decades – an achievement only matched by Manchester United.

Tottenham supporters have rivalries with several clubs, mainly within the London area. The fiercest of these is with north London rivals Arsenal (with matches between them termed the North London derby). They also share notable rivalries with fellow London clubs Chelsea and West Ham United. Tottenham currently play their home games at Wembley Stadium - with White Hart Lane being dismantled to make way for a new stadium as a part of the Northumberland Development Project.

Strangely confident for this. We'll smash a 1-0 win as last season. 3-5-2 is the way to go against their system :

    De Gea
    Bailly - Smalling - Jones
    Valencia - Matic - Herrera - Young
    Mikhi
    Rashford - Lukaku

    This.

Any chance Pogba and/or Fellaini could be fit for this one?

We need a Chelsea at home performance from last year. Everybody was terrified how we'll do and we had a professional job on them, played them of the park and won comfortably.
Jose is against the wall a bit or if he's not he will be, he works well when he's angry. That I hope at least.

Should be this. Miki is shite in big games and has been shite for a while. Mata as well. Martial and rashford need to start together for their pace here.

100% agree with this. 343/352 is our best bet with the players available.

I'm not sure Mkhi even makes the bench for this, he's been awful. I think after tonight Jose will be playing Rashford/Lukaku/Lingard in attack.

And I reckon we smash them. Jones with a wonder hat trick.

Expect similar but with one of the attacking mids for Martial.

Wouldn't actually mind it being Lingard as his industry would be needed and although Mkhi can offer the same he's been off the boil for a while now.

EDIT: Also with doubts over Jones and Bailly I wouldn't expect both to start so maybe Tuanzabe or God forbid Lindelof will play.

Pretty sure he'll start this given he gets full rest today. Let's hope he'll do better than the previous crap games.

Interesting match, that is for sure. Will be tight. Kind of have to win because if City win, and we lose, its curtains.

Going into this as underdogs is better than going to Anfield as favourites. I've got a feeling we'll bore them to death and grind out a win. It's going to be great.

But that was quite a weird lineup, one most people would consider now very defensive to start with, something like a 4-4-2 with Young and Valencia as wingers, or, if you prefer, a 3-5-2 with no playmakers whatsoever and Lingard and Rashford upfront.

I think Mourinho will match up like for like with the 3-4-3 and I'd like to see us go for the below line-up.

Realistically Lindelof and Mkhitaryan are more likely to start than Axel and Mata.

Don't think mata will start after his horrific outing and Mou won't have the balls to give Tuanzebe a start although he has earnt it.

I would like to see this too. And maybe that's better described as 3-4-1-2 or, if you're strict, a 3-4-3, since the playmaker/central runner, Mkhitaryan or Lingard, plays far ahead of midfield and even goes to the rightwing a lot, no?

Tonight might have been the first time, after Real Madrid, that we featured three at the back against a team with four at the back, and Tottenham plays three at the back too. But will Mourinho risk it Bailly isn't ready, risking it with Lindelöf or Tuanzebe? I doubt it, although with Darmian or Blind he could.

Also think Rashford will come from the left, not the right, where Lukaku's movement is more natural. The same with Herrera–Matić pairing in midfield.

Don't think the manager trusts Mata in that position, even less against a team like Tottenham. Whenever he used three at the back, Mata tended to feature in one of the upfront positions. Also, Smalling as central centerback, Jones on the right, with those players.

Mata could definitely start if we go 4-2-3-1, and he's much better at home with possession.

Early kick off on Saturday- and Spurs are given the Wednesday slot in the league cup. Not ideal for them, here's hoping they're taken to penalties and beyond.

Would take a repeat of last years game for sure. Only problem is the Mkhitaryan that turned up that day has been missing for a while now.

If we score first I think we’ll win. We need to start well. Certainly can’t be letting them get the first goal - even Madrid couldn’t come back from that to win against them. And we need a win and nothing less!

You're right about Mata, it will be Mkhitaryan in that role unless Lingard's brace tonight has nudged him ahead. I think Jones is better as the central CB in a back 3 as he is better at bringing the ball out.

Sadly I think you're likely right about Tuanzebe, which is a shame as he looks more composed and ready for the task than Lindelof.

I was not talking about preferences, but the uses Mourinho does of these players. In a back three, Smalling seems always to be the central one and it makes sense. Not sure why the central one would be the one distributing play, on the contrary, we should have two of them on each side able to do it, like Jones/Blind or Bailly/(ideally)Lindelöf.

I get where you're coming from, but bringing on one of Martial or Rashford late in the game when players are tiring is a pretty invaluable weapon to have. I would bring in Mata for one of them; his horror show against Huddersfield has made people forget that he has been largely very good so far this season.

This is the sort of thing people only say when they try to reason why Mourinho isn't playing them both at the same time. Would Barcelona leave Neymar on the bench so he can play for 30 minutes against a tired team as a sub to change the game if it's needed? No, they play their best starting 11 from the start and try to get the best result with their best side, then if it needs changing, use a sub (like miki, mata or lingard... plenty of bench quality options).

Our work rate needs to be really high in this game and the ball circulation tempo too needs to be brought up a notch.

3412-343 hybrid would be great for this one with mkh doing both the roles as a 10 and as rw whenever he likes. I guess tottenham will set up the same way with 3 at the back so we will need to have a higher or atleast equal amount of work rate and energy relative to tottenham team. Lukaku needs better movement in this match too to do damage. Lingard's two goals in the midweek is good for his confidence if he comes of the bench. Herrera and matic needs to be really sharp in winning second balls this game to avoid deli ali win those and shoot from long distances. Bailly and valencia really have a job to do stopping erikson and ali linking up with harry kane as i feel smalling is vunrable to leak a goal down the centre.

Could later become a 352 if we are leading comfortably with fellani or tuanzebe comming on i feel.
