    My thoughts exactly.
There was no need to panic.
We were 1 man down and we could've tried to keep possession.
I think it was panic which caused this - if in doubt, launch it.
If they were calm, I'm sure they'd prefer to keep possession, rather than launching the ball.
    3 points though, can't complain.
Think that was the, still lingering, lack of confidence. There are a lot of positives to be taken away from this game though so hopefully it' gets better from here on.

Edit: confused myself with up-hill and down-hill in this context :D

We lost confidence going BEFORE Fletcher and Valancia were brought on.
I don't hold these players to blame at all.
The moment we lost Rooney, we pannicked and our ability to hold onto possession went out of the window.
The good thing though is that we didnt concede 3-4 goals (which we could've).
We did concede 1 goal only, but this was ruled offside (which IMO was wrong - it was a goal).

Based on that awesome clearance from mcnair, superb blackflip header he should start next week too.

Fantastic win so pleased we could keep that. Getting that offside up gave me so great feelings. Mcnair made us proud really good debut. Rafael though was our best player. Di Maria was sadly poor today, but still wining show that we go in the right way no at least. Finally something to be positive about. Lets beat Everton next they was poor today and have Europa league before so we should be able to beat them.

The best thing is that our defense managed to shut out West Ham's wave after wave of attacks. I think we should focus on that, rather than our lack of offensive play after the red card.
Feel this was more down to luck than a great defensive performance. Even with us having ten men behind the ball all the time they got themselves to some quite dangerous positions which could/should have cost us...

We did better today though. Thought Rojo, Rafael and Mcnair was really good and West Ham are not easy. It was a step in the right direction and should be morale boosting to win with 10 men.

The midfielders need to do a much better job of getting hold of the ball and keeping possession. Di Maria, Herrera and Blind are good passers of the ball, but they give away the ball too much. Even with West Ham pressing, our defenders should not have had to deal with the ball so much.

Was happy with every decision of LVG today. The starting 11 justified their selection with their first half performance. When Rooney went out he chose to keep RVP on instead of Falcao who was better at pressing since he was still not completely confident about falcao lasting 90 mins and that too leading a line alone. Also, RVP's contribution defensively at set pieces is a lot. He is a very good header of the ball defensively and offensively.

Thought Herrera was amazing today. Along with Rafael they split open West Ham many times. Hope he is fit for Everton. Rojo was good defensively but he plays too many risky passes when the receiver is surrounded and under pressure. He should cut that out. Blind was good too bot a little loose in possession sometimes.

All in all I am more happy that our defense was tested and they came out top. This will do a lot for their confidence.

so west ham at home then.

not in great form, central defenders all injured, Rooney sent off with 30mins to go.

And we still beat them. Because it's West Ham at home,

For a team under defensive crisis, To lose your captain to a straight red and for the young lad McNair to keep his head so well, I think we did extremely well. This will raise confidence and morale. It will also bring the team together.

Worried about Ander though. Hope he's alright.

I wouldn't be too worried about Herrera, he did walk off the pitch.

That's underpaying it a bit. West Ham have been in great form off late and we're suffering from a lack if confidence and leadership.

    We did well.

Post-match reaction from Louis Van Gaal

    On Rooney's red card:
"He makes a professional foul. I don't think Wayne wanted to do it that way but he did it and you can give a red card."
    On Paddy's McNair's debut:
"Van Gaal's praise for Paddy McNair: "He played very well. His goal-saving header in the second half was fantastic."
    On the peformance:
We played very well in the first half – good attacking and effective football. Very dominant. We had to fight and fight and fight again. I'm very pleased with my players' attitude.

    Post-match reaction from the players

So psyched, even though the second half was a bad performance, we can only get better from here. Rooney getting a red card, may be a blessing in disguise, forces LVG to play someone else in his place. I think Mata should start, dropping him isn't justified imo.

His head was offside. Seemed like a correct decision to me.

Rafael couldn't sleep after the last match - and I love him even more for it!!

I really hope he can stay fit now (jinx), we're just so much deadlier with him on the pitch! Brilliant performance first half today - and he doesn't hide when the going gets tough in the second half either!

Great result, great first 45 minutes, great debut by McNair (*** backward header!) and Rojo did well to guide him. Shaw also had a great debut. Midfield was good until it was 10 men and then got knackered. Strikers -s till voerloaded but falcao has played well - deserves a goal next game.

I hope Herrera isn't injured as he's a boss! The team did well to get those 3 points and it will galvanise a few of them.

Better subs by LvG this game - Valencia gave us a bit of an outlet, Fletcher a bit of calm...but should have subbed RvP who was dead instead of Falcao (unless Falcao is still not match fit - he looked chagrined to come off).

And Rooney was playing well...but he is a poor captain. Deserved the red and now we will see how Mata does as the #10 with Falcao ahead of him.

I thought McNair played very well for his first game and that clearance WOW!

Rooney is an idiot. If he didn't swing with as much venom in that kick he would of got a yellow but in a way I am glad because I prefer Mata over Rooney in the #10 role.

Even though Van Persie got the goal again I thought his overall play was poor looks uninterested.
I think Falcao offers more in his link up and hold up play. He just needs a goal then the floodgates will open.

Good for him bouncing back and being the man of the match in my opinion today. Really pleased with him dominating that right side.

How anybody can be proud of this win is beyond me. Holding on for our lifes for an entire second half in our home versus fecking West Ham. Fortunatley enough lucky to get the 3 points because WHU had the equaliser in their hand many times. Never been more relived to see an offside flag. I'am happy with the 3 points but proud of this lot, hell no !

We really aren't any better than relegation fodder.

How on earth are we going to hold on until the winter playing like this ? Team like Chelsea and City will just rip us apart.
My normal reaction to this kind of post would get me barred from the CAF.

That game had everything today. Great performance from our defense. Rooney let us down with the sending off, but in all honesty I think only 50% of refs see that as a red. Again, once Herrera went off, we look like we lost a bit of control in possession. Having Carrick back will be great for those type of situations.

I'll take the positives away from this game and I think a performance like that will do wonders for our confidence and especially the defense.
I don't think its fair to say Rooney let us down. It was a foul, a card, but marginal, and tactical. Not dirty. He has been playing well, and putting his heart into the effort. Well done Van Persie. Well done all the team. Luke Shaw congrats on a decent debut. Special mention for my MOTM Rafael. Well done especially to Paddy McNair. He looks the business. Yess, come on Man Utd .. it would have been gutting if this turned out to be a draw.

Think we deserved a bit of luck from the officials after last week and we got it from the linesman at the end there.

Don't like to see us wasting time at home but any points are good points the way we are now. Worried that Rooney will take a few games to get back on form and back to his playing weight with his ban and will prob struggle against City on his return.

Falcao looked miserable coming off, not sure if that's a good thing as he was eager to stay on or just not enjoying his lack of goals.

In a blinding flash of insight I realise that I am sick of caf, sick of pessimism, sick of likes and being a newbie for four years, regardless of how stupid, all to rare, and non inspiring my comments might be. But well done United today, gutsy and together performance, and well done LVG and the new players and the youth players and the regulars. Played like a team, in shit difficult circumstances. Night all.

Wut? He got sent off for Violent conduct and will rightly serve a ban. It was idiotic and he'd be getting slaughtered if we'd blown it with 10 men.

Good win. Had to hold on but did and team spirit and defensive confidence will benefit as a result.

Not convinced that Rooney deserved a red, he didn't kick out but attempted a cynical foul to stop their break which is seen all the time (especially on the continent) and only ever gets a yellow.

Rafael was brilliant defensively after being one of the main attacking threats in the first half. McNair was solid as was Rojo and Shaw.
