Not a chance that McNair gets in ahead of Thorpe. I would be genuinely stunned if this happened.

    De Gea
    Rafael--Thorpe--Rojo--Shaw
    Blind
    Herrera--Di Maria
    Rooney
    van Persie--Falcao

subs: Lindegaard, Vermijl, Valencia, Fletcher, Pereira, Mata, Januzaj

Previously I went with Mata starting and van Persie on the bench but with Smalling injured I've gone with Thorpe at CB. Thorpe isn't the biggest and I think we'll be vulnerable from set-pieces so I've gone for some additional height. I wouldn't be surprised to see Allardyce play a big striker and try to bully Thorpe.

In saying this, I wouldn't be surprised if Fletcher was the one to start at the back.

LVG will stick to his philosophy but he might change his system in order to give more protection to his defense, to his team

I mean, all the players are not fit enough to play, and if you put in front RVP and Falcao, we'll have some issues with fitness at some point. So yes, we have to build their fitness, but we should be more pragmatic in our selection, and play fit players and find a way to balance the team

Against Leicester we were in control until 3-1, but neither RVP nor Roo took the lead at this point and calmed a bit the thing, that-s what Vida, Rio and Pat, and Edwin, Giggsy, Neville, Scholes did before …. That’s to be a leader in this team

We failed collectively but for instance, I have to blame the two of them about that. And the balance I talked about is not only on the team sheet, but also in the brains like said LVG

That’s why I say that we should include Fletcher for this game, and play a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 in order to have the ball and give protection to the defense

Other thing, I really hope that LVG will get rid of Smalling or Jones this summer. They can be talented for sure (or not) but the way they injured themselves is questionable since 3/4/5 years now. We should count on them, not always hoping their come back. Look at Arsenal defense, Mertesacker and Koscielny are never injured, the same with Cahill/Terry (since 3 years they build a partnership), it was the same for Skretl/Agger before and Kompany is never injured more than a month

But, hopefully West Ham’s big body will not hurt too much and I hope our pace and penetration will beat them

What are you lot smoking? Fletcher in the team?! Come on!

Van Persie needs to be benched and Mata MUST start in the #10 role.

He offers us a lot more than Rooney does in that role.

Plus we need to start playing Falcao, once he gets going he is a goal machine!

Well I keep saying that United are gonna win, and then they don't so I'm going for a pessimistic 1-1 draw in this one. Though on after thought I don't see either team scoring so little.

With the crowd behind us I think United will just about do enough to win so I will go with a 2 - 1 scoreline. This formation might not happen, but after watching the Leicester game van Gaal should play with two defensive midfielders, just to add that extra bit of steel to protect the back four. Therefore, here is my 4-2-3-1 formation:

    De Gea

    Rafael Smalling Rojo Shaw

    Blind Rooney

    Herrera Mata di Maria

    Falcao

I like Rooney, but I think he is no longer a threat up front as he once used to be. What he does give you though is a tireless work rate and plenty of commitment. He is also not afraid to tackle, so I would like to see him playing at CDM to complement Daley and to give him a hand. With the four hispanics up front running at the West Ham defense I can see them being a real threat.

Swap the bolded players and Smalling is injured btw.

In the hope Smalling is ok I'll go for:

    ------------------DDG--------------
    Valencia---Smalling---Rojo---Shaw
    ---------Fletcher------Blind---------
    Rooney-------Herrera------Di Maria
    ----------------Falcao----------------

The thinking is that this protects the likely nervous defence better, & this front 4 should carry more than enough threat for West Ham to handle, Herrera is more mobile than Mata so can help out when West ham are attacking, would have played Janujaz over Rooney, but Rooney will no doubt have to play.

I am at Old Trafford for this one. Every time I have been to OT we have won 5-0.

Don't worry lads, this one is in the bag. ;)

After talking about youth getting chance due too injuries/suspension, guess that means we may see Thorpe in with Rojo. Seeing as we have no one else.

We will probably score goals with such quality strength of attacking but you can't expect much from the defense. Not in the current state.

Some pressure on Shaw as team is in immediate need of a winning run. Hopefully he won't crack.

With Mata starting we will have further more problems in Defense. We need extra players who can also defend. For Creativity and getting ball towards opposition box we have Di Maria. So there is need for Rooney than Mata on Pitch.

I saw some youth games where Thorpe was leader and captain. I hope he starts and does well

Yes people forget the tracking back rooney does he was the only player tracking back late in the game. Yes he flubbed the lines before the 3 goal but he is a better fit right now until our defence is sorted

That third goal was mainly because of Smalling and Blind who are trying to clear the ball at the same time. It fell into Rooney where he doesn't have enough space to clear it properly.

We need serious midfield protection in this game and hopefully 2 CDMS is enough.

Exactly this. Welbeck has scored 1 goal, after missing easy chances in his first two goals. And Hernandez has come on as sub and scored a couple of tapins for a team 6-2 up in a largely uncompetitive league for a world class team!
    "Tap ins"

Have you seen the fecking game? One of was a screamer, the other was a shot from outside the box.

Our best option but sadly I can't see LVG dropping RVP... Mata might have to be on the bench. Heck I don't care even if Falcao gets dropped, anything to let Mata play the No 10 role and let Rooney go up front.
Aye, I fear that too. Squeeze all three of them into the team and you may get a goal or two out of nowhere from any one of them - certainly. But it's unbalanced. Mata actually is a number ten or whatever you want to call it. Rooney is not - he is something of a hybrid at best (between a number ten and a second striker) but not a playmaking offensive midfielder. He's a bloody good striker, though, and a more, say, comprehensive one than Van Persie.

To me, it's a no-brainer. Van Persie and Rooney suffer from not being a particularly well functioning partnership, for one. And then there's the fact that Van Persie doesn't seem particularly sharp at the moment as such. So, play Falcao - a notorious goal getter - up front with Rooney as a second striker of sorts. I wouldn't hesitate for a moment if I were Aloysius. Van Persie can come on as a super sub. Not a bad man to have on the bench as an impact player.

After the press conference I honestly think playing so many attacking players would be stupid, we need to protect the defence.

    Rafael -- Fletcher -- Rojo - Shaw

    Januzaj---Herrera----Blind -- -Di Maria-----

Januzaj is not good enough at the moment to keep even an underperforming RVP or a recovering Falcao out of the team. He is also lightweight for physical teams. In addition he seems short of confidence and needs to come on when the team is well on top to get his confidence back. At the moment the is trying to hard and making a lot of mistakes.

If both strikers are not available, we will need to bring on a more physical player for the midfield, e.g. Valencia, and move Di Maria up front with Rooney. 4-4-2, with Blind maybe on the left.

We'll either have someone playing out of position or a youngster playing CB along side Rojo. Not idea at all, but it's still no excuse not to get a win on Saturday.

Rather the latter for me. And I hope that with LVG we now have a manager who is willing to take that chance. It could very well pay off.

Think about it - with our obvious CB troubles at the moment. A good cameo from Thorpe, say, could be potentially significant. He's a year older than Blackett who has already been given plenty of minutes - and arguably a more natural centre half to boot. Could be the making of the lad - and feck knows we could use just that.

Just when we thought Evans and Blackett was an appalling defensive couple, Saturday will be even uglier.

I've had a couple of fans tell me it's all good and we don't need to sign a cb in january. :houllier:

If Jones and Smalling could ever play more than about 5 games together back to back, we might not need to.
But they never do. And they've been here a while now.

It gets to a point they either have to prove it, or we just sack them off and buy big.
