    Know The Opposition

Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies) is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue — leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park — which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

Will take a point. Hopefully Varane and Martial will be back and Fred can play with Sabitzer. Can’t stomach the three giant donkeys providing jack crap again.

Our midfield without Casemiro looked pretty shite against Fulham, so hopefully Eriksen will be back for this one.

Guessing Varane will be fine. One of those to play on the counter I think. Would like to see something like this, Bruno playing deeper and Fred pushing with his pressing.

    De Gea
    Wan Bissaka Varane Martinez Shaw
    Sabitzer Bruno Fred
    Antony Rashford Sancho

Imagine that Garnacho will still be out for this, but maybe Eriksen can make a short appearance. I think we'll get something out of this one. If we steal all 3 points it'll be an enormous blow to their chances for 4th.

Our performances are just so bad the past few weeks. I am not going to pinpoint the reasons (there are many), but I don't think it will change after the international break. It could be more detrimental to us than Newcastle, who will have fewer international players. You see what rest can do in today's game vs Fulham, they were one step quicker and passes that are crisper.

Dropped points I reck9n. We've been shite recently, Newcastle will want revenge for the cup final and without casemiro to steady the midfield, I can only see one outcome. Hopefully we can have martial back for this

If everybody bar Eriksen and Casemiro is available, i'd go 4-3-1-2 with the following team:
    DDG

    AWB
    Varane
    Martinez
    Shaw

    Fred
    Sabitzer
    Mctom

    Bruno

    Rashford
    Martial

This will be tough. Hopefully Eriksen will be back. I would play him and Fred in midfield, Bruno number 10. Antony and Sancho on the wings, Rashford up front. Sit a bit deeper, counter.

I would bench Weghorst for this one.

Big game. I want us to improve our away form against the better sides in the league, but without Casemiro I'd probably take a draw here before kick off, if it was offered (hypothetically or course). Would rather just get this out of the way and hopefully win most of our other games. I'm rather confident we will win 20+ games this season - would be amazed if that doesn't secure top four and probably third at that.

Wait and see who's fit after international duty, but Varane & Antony should be ready to start at least.

Stop dreaming of excluding weggy. He's here forever until martial can play.

I mean up until now we've had valid reasons to never exclude him. Sancho was absent/out of form. Antony often out injured. Garnacho is just 18. Martial isn't worth bringing up. Weghorst provided a physical forward who stayed fit every game. He probably will play this game, but if we have Sancho and Antony both fully fit, fresh during the international break, in some semblance of form as both played well today... Why not? Then it's just a case of who plays in the midfield 3 and whether we use Weghorst as a 10 or go for Freds pressing.

Feels weird waiting 2 weeks between games when it's been about 3 days between each since the WC.

Hopefully not too much hard work internationally for them and some of them get to rest their legs. Assume it will be needed because these lot will no doubt want revenge for the Cup final and it's at St James' as well which won't help.

This is a different team without Casemiro. Looking at a possible McFred game, which will make it tough.

I'd consider benching Wout for this one as I don't think we'll be able to break Newcastle down consistently, so it'll be a counter attacking game.

I think the Weghorst tactic has been overused lately and this would be a good game to change it up a little!

Lets pray Martial is ready for his customary 45 mins before another 2 month spell recovering.

I know Ten Hag has repeatedly said things about next man up with Casemiro being out and that we played well even without him at the start of the season and brought up the Arsenal and Leeds games.

Yes at start of season McTominay did play quite well in that role up till the City shellacking, after which he seems to have regressed. As for the more recent games - Fred/Sabitzer and yesterday McTominay/Sabitzer has seen us at very best been even but, reality has been we've lost the midfield and his comments hopefully are more so just for the media than being a bit blinkered.

It's an away game and we can't start the game being overrun there. He needs to shore up midfield and this is one I hope he strongly considers doing away with the 10 to start, drop Weghorst to the bench and play Bruno on the wing or have him sit deeper along side whoever the midfield 2 are. Let Rashford take the striker role and stretch them with Antony and Sancho.

Eriksen definitely won't be back. Martial will be but not match fit.

A draw will do us, more pressure on Newcastle to win

I hate that it’s at their ground. Always an hostile place to go to and they’ll be up for it. I’m never confident when we don’t have Casemiro. Think they’ll run straight through us and score the first goal. Hope I’m wrong and we can score first and then control the game rather then chasing it.

It's away, they'll want revenge and they have over-achieved this season, but United should be going here for the very achievable 3 points

We'll end up dropping a bollock in one of the cup competitions if we start looking like we're falling out of the top 4.

Thought he as going to return in May 1st week? Maybe i misread. If he returns, will be great, but doubt he would start and might be eased in during the end stages.

Some promising quotes from ten Hag were circulating recently. Maybe I'm being a little premature but I reckon we're not too far away.

Yess. Completely missed this. Glad to know! :keano:

Him along with Fred and Sabitzer will be a good combination if he does come back before Casemiro's ban.

If Newcastle could somehow implode a la Fulham, that would be lovely. Can't see Eddie Howe getting a red card though.

Three points would be seriously massive here, with Spurs being Spurs, Liverpool away to City and creating a nice gap to Newcastle.

Don't see us chucking Eriksen or Martial back in from the start, they will come on to change the game if needed more likely, I'd like to see (Assuming no further injuries)

    DDG
    AWB Varane Martinez Shaw
    Casemiro Sabitzer
    Antony Bruno Sancho
    Rashford

Hate seeing Weghorst start, think Sancho needs a run of games and Sabitzer looks more promising than Fred in that 8 role and offers more of an offensive threat
